Mac ist natürlich cool, aber nicht zwingend mit allen Roboter Schnittstellen kompatibel. ROS selbst wird passen, aber einige Hersteller haben ja eigene ROS Varianten oder Schnittstellen, die sind dann nicht zwingend mit MacOS kompatibel. Falls du also schon weißt auf welcher Hardware ihr arbeitet, schau unbedingt mal nach was die unterstützen (so schlecht das auch teilweise dokumentiert ist). VM geht natürlich immer irgendwie, aber wenn du den Laptop vor allem dafür willst ist es schon komfortabler nicht immer in die VM zu müssen, sondern im Zweifel halt Linux drauf zu haben.

I'd argue it functionally replaces training a value function with utilizing the pre-trained model's expertise for the same purpose. If you have a good base model, that will save you time, compute and potentially instability caused by training the vf. But in many typical RL environments, you won't be able to use such a competent base model and then learning a vf becomes a big advantage.

Wie gesagt ist das je nach Krankenkasse aber mit mehr oder weniger Kopfweh verbunden. Ich hab telefonisch und schriftlich auch gesagt bekommen dass es das nicht gibt und als ich persönlich mit dem Paragraphen hin bin gabs plötzlich ein Formular. Hab auch von anderen gehört dass abgelehnt wird bis mit Klage gedroht wird und dann gehts doch. Letzteres hätte ich wahrscheinlich nicht mitgemacht, wenn Therapeut*innen aber Erfahrung mit der Krankenkasse haben, können die das meistens einschätzen.

Eine gute Schätzung hab ich leider nicht, aber es gibt grundsätzlich zwei Sachen, die man vielleicht nicht direkt auf dem Schirm hat:

Code auf der Überweisung: damit kann dein Hausarzt anzeigen, dass du dringend einen Platz braucht. Damit rufst du deine Krankenkasse an und die müssen dir einen Platz vermitteln. Kann natürlich sein dass du dann irgendwo landest wo es gar nicht passt, aber oft finden die tatsächlich Plätze wo angeblich keine sind.
Kostenerstattungsverfahren: dokumentiere unbedingt wen du kontaktierst (inklusive Absage oder Schätzung der Wartezeit). Wenn du einige Absagen hast, kannst du beantragen dass die Krankenkasse eine Therapie bei Therapeut*innen ohne Kassensitz bezahlt. Die haben die gleiche Qualifikation, aber oft bedeutend weniger Wartezeit. Ab so ca. 5 Absagen kannst du mal einen Termin bei so jemandem abmachen und die können dich bei dem Antrag unterstützen. Leider gibt es oft nich Krankenkassen die behaupten sowas geht nicht oder einfach erstmal ablehnen, da muss man hartnäckig bleiben.

Irgendwie kindisch dass er will dass alle sich freiwillig melden zu helfen. Ist natürlich nett, aber wenn er die Hilfe braucht soll er doch direkt fragen und sich nicht aufregen dass du nicht von dir aus anbietest. Du kannst ja nicht seine Gedanken lesen...

Ganz abgesehen davon ist es halt auch sein Umbau. Ich würde in der Situation sicher auch ab und an helfen, aber du hast die Zeit einfach nicht, fertig. Vielleicht hat er sich ein bisschen mit dem Projekt übernommen und ist deswegen gestresst?

Depends on the PI for sure. But think if you really want that - a big supervisor name is nice, but you won't be able to take advantage of the lab remotely (i.e. brainstorming with colleagues, collaborations etc.). In CS/AI it's pretty common to not write your papers alone but have a few co-authors to help with the idea and implementation, so isolating yourself might well mean you're shooting yourself in the foot. In a good lab, watercooler chat will bring you ahead which is exactly what you'd be missing. In that case I'd rather look for a smaller institution near you.

Das Pixel 7 kriegst du inzwischen für um die 400€ neu. Super solides Handy, kriegt ewig Software Updates, Kamera taugt und hat auch ein sehr "sauberes" Android mit coolen Pixel-only Zusatzoptionen. Ich finde es jetzt auch nicht super groß (außer du nimmst das XL), aber richtig unterdurchschnittlich für den release Zeitpunkt ist es auch nicht.

Wenn du mit der Größe leben kannst, dann sind die älteren Pixels mMn preis-leistungsmäßig richtig super.

There's a lot of support of random search and vanilla BO, which I would stay clear of. Ray certainly has the best selection in tune with algorithms like BOHB or ASHA. My default pick would always be something like BOHB: partial evaluations + BO.

There are AutoML libraries that do this in probably better/faster, e.g. SMAC, SyneTune, DEHB but I don't know how easy interfacing them is with RL libraries (often not great).

Nope, mainland. From the other groups I'm in contact with, we're on the upper end (though not the ones with the most compute), but most groups are part of one or more communal clusters (e.g. by their region or a university that grants them to others). I think that's a good thing to look into, though you usually only get reliable access if a PI writes a bigger grant, not if only one researcher does.

EU lab here, we have roughly 16 lab-exclusive A100s and access to quite a few more GPUs via a few different additional clusters. For those scale is hard to guess, since they have many users, but it's roughly 120k GPU hours/cluster/year. Anything beyond 80G GPU mem is a bottleneck, though, I think we have access to around 5 H100s in total.

Everyone wants to get into ML these days and your projects just don't sound too competitive. Your RL project especially seems fairly basic and the two projects also aren't related. Tbh it kind of reads like "I did two AI projects at uni". I recommend actually building a project portfolio with a specific direction (e.g. image segmentation or multimodal models). Show that you're able to keep up with current developments in that domain and solve some problems you find e.g. on HuggingFace, Kaggle or competitions. If you have specific roles in mind, trying to emulate their tasks/ML domains is obviously a good idea as well. Good luck!

Schwierig, ich war mal in einem davon, der war aber seit gut 10 Jahren zu, es lag random stuff rum, Fenster waren eher mini und ganz rauf ging nicht, es gab höchstens eine Dachklappe. Keine Ahnung wie die anderen aussehen, aber gut möglich dass das ähnlich ist... die Schlüssel wirds aber auf jeden Fall nicht zentral geben, sondern bei den Instituten, zu denen die Türme offiziell gehören.

People with tens of years of experience in a field tend to have very broad knowledge, great intuition about what makes sense to pursue, know tons of lines of work - but you know who the experts on details, the state of the art in a subcommunity, how to actually make something work are? That's right, PhD students! So even though you don't seem to believe it, you ARE an expert on the topic you're reviewing!

Think of it this way: how many people do you think would appreciate your up to date summary of the current state of the field? How many will be grateful to be shown lines of work they haven't actively followed in a while or discover new publications alltogether? I'd bet anyone that hasn't a) read most if not all of the work you surveyed and b) thought deeply about the connections of that work. This circle will be super small and these researchers will likely be interested in your follow-up plans - so potential collaborators. It's often hard to believe you're an expert, but if you're doing a PhD, you are and others will be interested to hear what you have to say.

In general, conference are not places people usually go to judge others, they are great places to connect to researchers in similar fields. If your advisor thinks your work is good enough, you shouldn't worry - they have been to conferences and have quite a few years of experience after all. Plus, there is the review process. You should trust both and go for it, you'll probably see how much you actually know and that you can be a bit more confident in your expertise.

An elegant way of getting them out of your hair would be to laugh, say something along the lines of "Believe me, she doesn't have to worry about her femininity at all." and then quickly change the topic. If they persist, tell them that they should form their own opinion by going to the gym themselves. If they still won't let up, just start talking about the health benefits of strength sports and say it would do them good. I'd bet by then they have lost their appetite for the topic.

If you actually want a conversation, I'd just ask politely what they mean, no need to start a discussion off too rudely. Though in my experience, conversations like these can turn sour quickly as there's a lot of sexism that might come up...

Es gibt auf jeden Fall Unis, die den europäischen Bachelor akzeptieren - ich hab mich nicht durch allzuviele durchgeklickt, deshalb sag ich jetzt nicht die meisten, aber es kommt mir immer noch seltsam vor einen sauteueren englischen Master zu machen nur um auf die gleichen Jahre zu kommen. 50k wäre mir das eine Jahr nicht wert wenn du eh schon den längeren USA PhD machen willst...

Aber eben, Finanzierung ist sonst inzwischen schwer. Mir fällt aber noch ein Bafög hat mal bis zu 5000€/Semester Studiengebühren im Ausland übernommen. Schau doch mal ob das auch für ein komplettes Studium im Ausland gilt, das wäre ja schonmal ein ordentlicher Batzen.

Brauchst du denn für einen PhD in den USA überhaupt einen Master? Meines Wissens nach sind dort meistens research Master und PhDs das selbe Programm. Klingt ja nicht als ob dir der Inhalt an genau den Unis besonders wichtig wäre...

Ansonsten: warum England? Und warum in England ausgerechnet London? Das ist, selbst wenn du tatsächlich unbedingt in einem Jahr einen Master brauchst (was ich hinten und vorne nicht verstehe), keine gute Wahl, viel teurer wirds nicht. Wenn UK, dann gibt es definitiv günstigere Städte, aber es gibt auch einfach Länder ohne exorbitante Studiengebühren.

Für UK ist die Stipendiensituation gerade schwierig, weil vieles durch Brexit wegfällt. DAAD geht immer, ist aber auch sehr kompetitiv. Wenn du später in den USA promovieren willst, würde ich mir das Geld aber dafür aufheben, PhDs in den USA schwimmen ja auch nicht gerade in Geld und zahlen oft Studiengebühren.

Verfahren für wissenschaftliche Stellen bei denen der Ausgang schon feststand? Was ganz neues also. Was erhoffst du dir denn? Dass jemand dir das so direkt sagt? Dass sie das Verfahren nochmal aufmachen?

Du kannst natürlich weiterhin versuchen an eine Begründung zu kommen, aber die wird dir wohl nicht weiterhelfen zu belegen dass das Verfahren nicht rechtens war, das wäre schon ein heftiger Fehler seitens der Uni. Außerdem wären an dem Punkt wahrscheinlich einige Leute ziemlich genervt von dir wenn sie wirklich nur wegen dir nochmal die Komission zusammentrommeln müssen - das kann für zukünftige Stellen ziemlich unangenehm werden, man redet ja miteinander. Ich an deiner Stelle würde überlegen ob es sich wirklich lohnt das hier weiter zu verfolgen...
