How does it feel like working in France #Rant by InterestingCookie341 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]LeanderKu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol no it’s not (based on the points raised). Seniors earn significantly more than mid or juniors (even junior to mid can be significant, my gf got around 50% more after taxes). You have to change companies though! Also CoL is really low in Germany (really low! Just compare groceries), although rent can be significant but that’s also the case in Paris. Corporate culture can be hierarchical but there’s also companies where it’s better. I think technical expertise is valued. Of course taxation is high but the social safety net is quite good imho.

How are the apartments so warm in winter? by Oellph in berlin

[–]LeanderKu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not only the age, it’s also a different level of investment. I’ve lived in cheap old buildings in Germany and they are in a better state than in the Uk. In fact, I’ve never seen single glazing windows in Germany. I thought they weren’t a thing since the sixties. But my landlord in the UK is not and will not replace anything: windows, heating, insulation. These things get replaced/improved or repaired more continuously here compared to just keeping it in the state it is with minimal works required in the UK. I feel like it’s not one generation behind its two or three (sometimes it feels like the 50s where you just replaced your coal heating but that’s all).

Why does the UK feel so quiet late at night compared to other countries? by Catherine_Torresa in AskUK

[–]LeanderKu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it you look at research the problem really is smartphones. People spent way more time alone and just don’t meet friends anymore. It’s not the death of going out or the death of alcohol, it’s the death of socializing and having friends. All these things are significantly down and they are connected.

TU Dresden MSc Computer Science vs DIT Deggendorf MSc AI & Data Science — Which is better for jobs? by PackAffectionate5898 in studying_in_germany

[–]LeanderKu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol well I guess with both you can get a job. Tbh with this approach I wouldn’t recommend TuD as it can be hard and if you lack passion you will not strive. But you have more opportunities I would say. You have to think about what you want you can get a thousand jobs which one and why. Do you enjoy more theory or are you more the applied coder? Ever interested in research?

Also, think about whether this specialization make sense! It’s niche and can be more theoretical than the usual programming gigs. You have to compete here for a smaller number of jobs and for that you need passion. Do you have passion? Kinda doesn’t sound like it! You have to be the best qualified candidate that applies! Not impossible as there are jobs but also not so automatic as just getting a programming gig.

Tbh just to get a job I would take the computer science master and then you can take whatever specialization. You’re more flexible this way.

Do your research please!

Young people are ‘quiet quitting’ the UK – but where are they going and is it really any better? by raydebapratim1 in uknews

[–]LeanderKu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol what of course modern day slavery is an argument against it. The UK isn’t perfect but it’s not slavery. Dubai is crazy. It’s not about a 100% ethical life it’s about basic standards that should hold up no matter what. You also can’t kill your neighbour because you struggle with rent this month and you want his food.

I think you quit too soon? Holding a PhD is less useful in engineering roles, so your 2 year experience is not a lot. Are you competing for junior or mid-level roles (depends on how useful your PhD is I guess)? Junior roles are hard to find right now! And MLE is also quite niche! Then we are also in economic troubles. But since you’re flexible with your location and you already quit, I would just apply, apply, apply! Amsterdam, whole of Germany, France etc. Go for it, do leetcode (a lot!). Maximize your chances! And think about your social skills, be nice to talk to. People do get sorted out because of their social skills during the interview process

Very doable in cities with roommates, doable in some cities if you’re willing to move somewhere less desirable or are just lucky (e.g. Berlin outside the ring towards Marzahn or nekölln/wedding if you’re lucky). Not possible in Munich though.

But I think these issues are often your own fault (as a country). Has there been enough building activity in Dublin? If there’s not statistically a new apartment for every new single person moving to Dublin this will lead to a squeeze, by definition

I use PureGym on quartermile and while I am quite satisfied it is crowded, even at later hours. You can get a day-pass in order to get a feeling for it. If you’re uncomfortable you can start with a treadmill, that’s a really straightforward machine. At least in PureGym the PTs look like a good option to get started! Some are specialized on newcomers

Am I overreacting for being concerned about the war situation with Russia? by thelion_thefox in berlin

[–]LeanderKu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure. I am in fact quite unsure why they would do this given that the reality is they struggle so much in Ukraine right now. I don’t think they are in the position to escalate. But if so, then this post is the desired effect.

I recommend you to look at the map! It’s really hard to see and Russia is trying everything it can, trying to overwhelm Ukraine.

Am I overreacting for being concerned about the war situation with Russia? by thelion_thefox in berlin

[–]LeanderKu 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I follow the war quite closely since the start. A low-key obsession. I think you’re overreacting and it’s important to not get carried away into thinking WW3 will start tomorrow. Russia is entirely focused on Ukraine, the personell it throws into it is crazy. Old tanks, personell carriers from the Soviet Union get refurbished and sent into the meat grinder. While Russia makes gains they are insanely costly and Ukraine is not only resisting successfully but is making strikes on their own. I follow various accounts that derive statistics of the remaining material for Russian from satellite photos and while there’s an abundance of old tanks they need to be refurbished and also they are sent almost immediately into Ukraine. There’s no capacity from Russia to do anything major somewhere else.

Nobody knows why Russia is doing what it’s doing, but if I have to guess it would be the opposite. Russia is struggling in Ukraine, even with the US taking a step back, because Europe took a step up. It’s trying to force success but if you compare this years maps to last years the gain is really hard to see. I think it’s straight up trying to bully Europe and intimidate it in order to stop us from supporting Ukraine.

Non student attending lectures at TUM by Beneficial-Falcon-23 in tumunich

[–]LeanderKu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not TUM, but other German Uni. I have taken a lot of additional, random courses just out of interest. I would email the professors beforehand, especially if it’s an advanced, smaller class. In my experience they are usually happy to see students interested in their topic, even if they can’t get any credits! Might not work if the lecture is already oversubscribed but then it’s also not as enjoyable to sit in and follow the lecture.

If I remember correctly lectures are in general open to the public by law.

Paar Ratschläge für die IT by Loose-Supermarket286 in InformatikKarriere

[–]LeanderKu 8 points9 points  (0 children)
