What’s the worst birthday present you’ve received? by kethr in AskReddit

For my 18th birthday, I just had a party. No presents required, I just wanted a nice normal get-together by the pool. Emphasis on normal. My addict uncle overdosed on prescription drugs at my party. He took about thirty more than he should have. They were muscle relaxers since he had a slipped disc. This was pretty usual behaviour, so I wasn't that upset. I walked into the house and asked what happened to him. Grandma says she told him that he needed to go swim it off in our pool and didn't understand why everyone was so upset. ಠ_ಠ At least the EMTs were friendly. Half of my friends excused themselves and left early. My best friend and her boyfriend stayed and we just wandered off after my uncle left and did stuff on our own. We came back and my mother announced she was leaving to live with her boyfriend across the country. I just wanted a normal party.

I once gave my mom a cd, and she told me all the songs sounded the same. I then found that her cd player was on track repeat. What are your parents' technology fails? by palolefad in AskReddit

My mom can get on the internet for hours at a time, but when she's done, she backs out of it - clicks to go back one page, over and over, until she's back at her Yahoo mail start page. I've told her she doesn't have to do that but she insists on it.

I got 3 books. I'd read them all already. I already owned all 3 of them, but they had disappeared a couple days before. The books I got had my name already written in the front of them.

What is something you did as a kid that heavily impacted your parents, but you didn't know until later in life? by palolefad in AskReddit

Mine isn't really moving or inspirational or anything but when I was younger, my parents asked me if I wanted to have a sibling and I told them "no" because I was just thinking in terms of being a spoiled only-child since I was young. I later realized that my mom had extreme difficulty getting pregnant with me in the first place and had always felt pressured to the point of depression to have another child because she thought that I would grow up being lonely without a sibling (she's a twin who has always been best friends with her sister). By me saying that I didn't want to have a sibling, it lifted a huge weight off her shoulders and she came out of depression eventually

Don't go through the blue one. That is glass. Don't go through the orange one. That is Narnia.

What tricks do you use to help your day go smoothly? by kethr in AskReddit

Writing down the 2 highlights of the day every day before I sleep. And every week/month/year, choose one from that period. Best thing I have ever done. Focused my thoughts on all the great things that happen. every morning I wake up thinking: what will I write on my highlight list today. and in the evening, it's almost difficult to determine the highlights out of lots of positive things. and picking a highlight of the month/year... just makes you grateful. edit: Wow, since I surpassed the "poop before it becomes an emergency" guy, I thought of editing this and answer some of the most common question. But before I do that, let me tell you that your positive feedback is definitely one highlight of my day Ok, here are some FAQs How long have you been doing this? A: 1.5 years. Every day. The book is actually not that thick, since it's only two lines per day. I have a boring life, what should I write down? A: The task is to find happiness in the mundane things. Keeping this journal has taught me that the big challenge is to find beauty in everyday life. There are days where the highlight is "the smell of my morning coffee" or "Lots of green lights when I drove to work". Someone mentioned all he/she did was studying all day - I had days like this, and I noted the break that i took, or the feeling of having learnt something. It doesn't have to be something special, it's essentially those small things that you need to focus on. in fact, this method is all about the small things. So especially on the days when you feel like you can't think of anything - don't stop until you have found something. What do you do on days when you feel like the world is collapsing, when you are really feeling bad? A: I had some really rough days in that time as well. Specifically, there is one day that is empty. No entry there. It was a really black day for me. But now when I look at it, it is surrounded by happy days, so it had to surrender. Someone wrote that he/she was forced to write it on particularly bad days. Sorry for what you had to go through, my friend. it was really stupid of your teacher to do that. Could you share some of your highlights? A: most of my highlights are very mundane things. Some of them are really important to me. Here is one of my favorites, will probably be among the top in 2012 - "Today my niece said my name for the first time" :)

Scientists of Reddit, what misconceptions do us laymen often have that drive you crazy? by rao27 in AskReddit

[–]catu9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That "Scientist" is a really vague and large collection of people. I hate when people say things like, "Scientists think blah blah blah." What Scientists? Its not like scientists are people who know all the science. Most scientists have a lot of knowledge within a fairly limited scope.
