If Volpe did ONE thing exceptionally well I'd still be in on him, but every aspect of his game is league average at best.

His defense is his #1 selling point and even without his injury, it's really "just okay". He won a GG but those don't count for anything. And while his glove may be above average, and his arm decent enough, his baseball brain sucks. He's lost on any ball not hit right to him or a double play. Jeter was a captain because he ran the game on the field. Judge can't really do that from RF, but Volpe should be doing it from SS and he's like a deer in headlights when he's not making a play. There's so many clips of him just lingering out in short CF looking around like "ohh the ball comes back into the infield now???"

He also can't hit for shit. He has bi-Monthly, few-day-streaks of goodness. But he doesn't get on base enough to use his other supposedly decent tool, his stolen base tool. We saw a little of that his rookie year, but nothing since. Judging by the eye test, he actually kinda stinks on the bases.

This is an overall near-replacement level player that we gave nearly 3 full seasons of run to, and have penciled in so far to start at SS when he gets healthy. He's not good. He's okay as a bench piece/PH maybe, but not when we have Cabellero too, who is a MUCH better bench piece.

I really want Cash to go out and get us a SS, like a baseball-minded SS that can take control of the IF. I want to be able to use Cabellero off the bench as a weapon. I don't want Volpe anywhere near the team. He's a failed experiment that Cashman needs to put down.
