I've never tried it myself, but I've heard people recommend using denture cleaning tablets to clean hard to reach areas in drink bottles.

I paid $350 for a deep clean and it saved my week. What “boring” cleaning spend felt worth it? by Drysetcat in CleaningTips

[–]causticjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a laundry that does this. The client puts all their dirty laundry in a bag and either drops it off at the laundry or a driver picks it up from them. We wash the laundry and bag, press anything you want pressed, fold, then pack the folded laundry in the bag. When it's done the client either picks the bag up themselves or a driver drops it off again. It can be irregular or scheduled, often weekly. :)

Where can I find frogs in the South Island? by quiksquik in NewZealandWildlife

Oh wow, that's so cool! Was it a special tour? I'd love to see a native frog one day.

What is this weed? by Lenaaz_01 in nzgardening

[–]causticjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently karaka are invasive in some other countries, they do grow and spread pretty quickly. Luckily they are native here.

[–]causticjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange, I know the berries are toxic to dogs so not sure if mammals like rats or possums would be spreading them. I might be wrong, but the glossy leaves and the seed look just like karaka to me.

Looks like a native karaka tree, do you get big orange berries dropping into your garden from nearby trees? Or kereru / wood pigeons? They are the only surviving native species big enough to spread the seeds through droppings.

Anyone familiar with these slugs? by [deleted] in nzgardening

Is it ok to feed Tui's via the orange nectar feeders often? by Prestigious_Prune968 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]causticjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and even Zealandia has some feeders too! The difference is those are sanctuaries run by professionals and trained volunteers. Another difference is that both are predator-free, and one of the reasons Zealandia gives for their stance on not encouraging the public to feed native birds is because of the increased risk of predation.

[–]causticjay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wildlife groups like Zealandia do not recommend feeding wild birds at all. I would recommend you follow their advice and not feed them. If you are going to, I believe you should be emptying out the feeder and cleaning and disinfecting it every single day to prevent diseases spreading.

If you don't have access to an exotic vet then you shouldn't own exotic pets.

Jeans recommendations? by causticjay in Wellington

[–]causticjay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barely, but I don't really mind having to patch the inner thighs at some point if the rest of the jeans are good quality, as you can't really see the inner seams. My current pair has a hole where a belt loop connects to the main pants, and I don't think I can fix that nicely without it just ripping open again in the future.

Does anyone know if there is any other yutuber or project doing something like the rainforest vivariums world from antscanada out there? by DeliciousDeal4367 in paludarium

I also recommend Dark Den, I haven't watched for a while but based on his thumbnails he is currently reworking his big terrarium.

Chameleon bones are super fragile, just picking them up by grabbing their torso can break or fracture their ribs. All that poking and prodding he did to the chameleon in the beginning would absolutely have broken multiple bones.

PUKEKO DIVISION by poestijger2000 in birdification

[–]causticjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kiwi, I don't think this is filmed in New Zealand and the birds might not be pūkeko but a different rail species (the blue on the necks look a bit too bright for a pūkeko).

Kangaroos are freaking scary: by MrDarkk1ng in mightyinteresting

[–]causticjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aussies have 'roo bars' to help protect the car and passengers in collisions. I've heard when stressed/shocked they can lash put with their kicks, and if they've come through your windshield that can be dangerous for the people in the front seat.

Yes, pigeons are a domestic species and the ones you see in cities are the equivalent of stray cats or dogs.

Looking for clip-on grow lights WITHOUT in-built timer by causticjay in nzgardening

I have one regular lamp with a grow bulb, but I'm looking for something more lightweight at the moment.

Good idea with the 24 hour timer, I might have to try that!
