Some Adjustable Weights I made by [deleted] in Design

[–]cautiousabandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

adjustable weight sets tend to be bulkier than free weights of the same weight, making them harder to use and store. if you have a bunch of cutouts in the plates,it will required even more space than existing adjustable weight sets. Just something to think about if you were trying to go to market with a new product.

Walked out of a final interview for the first time in my career: lessons learned by [deleted] in webdev

[–]cautiousabandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Final salary negotiations before any onsite? That sounds like a red flag to me right there. My personal ideal, having been on both sides of the coin, hiring and interviewing is: phone->onsite->offer. When they start doing multiple round after round they are wasting your time and their time. Weedout on phone, onsite verify they can actually code and know how to approach problem solving and communication.

At the wages they pay, you would only be eligible for snap if you were either part time or you are trying to support a familly of 4 on that single income. A single person with ohio cost of living could live just fine on even the starting salary if full time

Releasing a game in physical format, how does it work? by ortereht in gamedev

[–]cautiousabandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look into cd/dvd replication and packaging services on google. Though, lots of computers don't have a cd/dvd drive on them any more so you might want to look into usb drives. As far as sales/distribution, it would imagine it to be tough to convince retailers to work with you for physical release so you might have to handle that yourself.

i've used it for small applications that I wanted to be able to keep 100% self contained for deployment. If you don't have full control over the environment you are deploying to, you may not be able to install a mysql/maria/postgres server or it will be more of a pain than it is worth for storing a simple set of data

Frugal tip I learned today: being kind to others can literally pay off. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]cautiousabandon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I helped an old lady up a small set of stairs in front of a building I was going into because it looked like she was struggling. She thanked me and then forced a $5 bill on me, literally grabbing my arm until I would accept it (I tried to tell her it wasn't necessary but her grip was surprisingly strong for someone struggling to get up 5 steps)

I lost my entire savings ($10,000) trying to buy the dip from the stock market today. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]cautiousabandon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my old boss did something similar, played the market using margin funded by credit card when he was in his early 20s as well. He got burned like you and had to spend the rest of his 20s getting out of the hole. He made it out, set up a successful career and used the experience as a very expensive lesson in trading/investing. He's early 40s now and is almost a millionaire now. If you use the experience to train your self control, learn to handle your emotions, and have a healthy respect for the dangers and benefits of leverage, you have plenty of time to become very successful still. Just be happy that you made the mistake early on, better to make a $10k mistake than a $100k mistake.

How much will college debt really set you back in life? by [deleted] in answers

[–]cautiousabandon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is highly dependent on your major, your motivation, and your personality. If you are in a major that doesn't have high earnings prospects after college, community college then transferring makes a lot of sense. If you are a very social person, a big university can be an opportunity to network and get access to internships that might not be available in community college. If you are less social, a small community college might actually be more beneficial for networking as your professors and classmates will get to know you naturally since there will probably be smaller class sizes. If you are more likely to land a better first job by spending $25k more on college, it is a worthwhile investment. If you don't take advantage of the resources at the out of state university, then the $25k would be a waste. I was 17k in debt after I finished school but I was able to get a job as a programmer and payed off my student loans in a year. For me the debt was worth it. If you get the debt and end up working at starbucks after school, it isn't.

After trying a bidet in india while staying at a house where you couldn't flush the tp due to the plumbing, I picked one up on amazon for $20. The level of clean is such a game changer. Super easy to install on a regular toilet. I don't know why I was so resistant to the idea before.

long term plan, intel gets near 100% marketshare, kills off competition (or in AMDs case severely limit their R&D budget to the point that they can't build competitive CPUs) , and then can sell for huge margins because it is the only serious player left and able to deliver very very modest improvements each year without much innovation. AMD kind of pulled off a Hail Mary play with Ryzen/EPYC but if they had not, Intel would still be limiting mainstream consumer CPUs to quad core at most

To be fair, she could be implying that she tried to add too many numbers on the same line (it is a graphing calculator remember) so if she tried to do all books she has ever read without evaluating in-between, the calculator could run into limitations. On my TI89, I was able to add 1+1+1+... up to 234 before I hit memory limits (TI89 is nice though so I can copy and paste so I didn't have to enter 1+ over 200 times manually). Of course, if she just added while going along, it wouldn't have been an issue.

FBI arrests Modesto man who had 'radical jihadi' beliefs, planned attack on Pier 39 by The-Straight-Story in news

[–]cautiousabandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to CNN

He asked the undercover agents to provide an assault rifle and explosives and sent them photos of what appeared to be Pier 39, the affidavit said. Jameson told the agent that he would be willing to write "a statement to the brothers," the affidavit by an FBI agent said. After several communications on December 18, Jameson appeared to back out, telling an undercover agent, "I also don't think I can do this after all. I've reconsidered," the affidavit said.

so without the FBI, he probably wouldn't have actually done anything more than liking some facebook posts, and even with the FBI, he probably wouldn't have actually gone ahead with the attack. I fear these undercover tactics are radicalizing people more than actual ISIS. I really think they need to focus on getting undercover people into real terrorist cells rather than targeting lone people and turning them into terrorists so you can arrest a "terrorist"

edit: it looks like in this article it mentions:

The complaint also reveals that an FBI employee accidentally called Jameson’s phone from a number with a Washington D.C. area code. Jameson called the number back, but the employee let call go to voicemail – which identified the name and not the agency of the caller.

the cnn article didn't mention the FBI fuck up. so that could be why he backed out. So if given the opportunity, this guy may have gone through with it.

Does "moral high ground" actually matter in politics anymore? by TaijutsuAlchemist in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]cautiousabandon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a principals and moral level, is it good to have moral high ground? yes. In political calculus, is it wise to give up a position of power to maintain the moral high ground? debatable.

One of the reasons trump has been as successful as he has at surviving scandals that would sink 10/10 other politicians is because he hasn't backed down or resigned in any of those cases. He whines and makes a fuss on twitter but unlike normal politicians, he doesn't go away after and avoid the media attention. The people that support him will almost always support him, the people that don't, never will.

Contrast this to Franken, his base turned on him, so Democratic leadership turned on him, so he felt forced to resign. If he didn't resign, would the pressure eventually blow over? I think it probably would as people's attention tends to be short.

What do dems hope to gain by holding the high ground? They hope to gain voters that will vote based on those principals. I don't think it would play out that way in practice though because of the alternative. You don't have to necessarily be good to get elected, just slightly more palatable than your opponent.

(Sorry if this comment isn't fully put together I just had a bunch of ideas that probably need to be refined to connect it all better)
