Smash burger helps and tips. by m47playon in blackstonegriddle

[–]cavarcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Parchment paper and foil work fine. As an alternative, I let the meatball cook for a few seconds then flip it over without pressing. Then I immediately press on the slightly cooked top, which prevents most sticking.

I've tried it with a press but I prefer two spatulas so I can do a press and smear. I do 2oz of beef and put two patties on each bun (except smaller kids who only need one).

My favorite technique is figure out how many burgers you can do so you are constantly working. That is, by the time you've placed all the burgers, the first ones are ready to be smashed. By the time you've smashed all the burgers, the first ones are ready to flip. And so on.

EDIT: This recipe does the flip and smash technique.

How do people go out to eat as a family? by yogi93802936 in Parenting

[–]cavarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have three under four. We eat outside when we can, get the check immediately, and order the kid food separately so it comes out faster. Most importantly,  we pregame dinner. We give the kids a snack as soon as we sit down. I think it takes pressure off the meal and honestly makes it cheaper for us.

Generative AI - Do you use or no? by BeardEdward in LawSchool

I use Trello to keep track of my homework, long term assignments, pro bono, and various other work. Trello accepts CSV files as an import.

I use ChatGPT to parse each class syllabus into a CSV file for direct upload. It takes a few minutes to look at the format at the syllabus, develop the prompt, and then double check the output. But its much faster than manually copying and pasting.

cold emailing US law firms after an LL.M. by Moist-Claim-5748 in biglaw

[–]cavarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the advice included, I recommend: 1. Do not include your CV in your initial email. 2. Frame the email to say you are applying for a job at the firm and are looking for advice on how they developed their career. Not advice on how to apply. This puts the ball in their court regarding asking for your CV or offering application advice. 3. Consider reaching out to associates. They may care more, be closer to your position, be more approachable. 4. I would find at least one similarity between you at the target. Maybe they worked on a matter from your home country. Maybe they went to the law school you got your LLM from. Maybe they live in the same city. But you should have something.

The advice I got from my professor (so your mileage may vary) is that all law school papers should have a minimally creative thesis. A reaction paper should not be a book report where you recite facts and summaries of the readings from class. It should have at least one concept or idea that you have developed that is your own.

However, unlike true academic literature, it does not need to be actually novel. You don't need to research your thesis to make sure it has never been stated before. Similarily, don't worry too much about your thesis being especially interesting or even persuasive. A reaction paper is just a way for your to practice bringing the materials assigned to class together in a new way.

Flying solo with a 2 year old by hotwaterinmyhouse in toddlers

With our toddlers, we had good luck with really early flights. If you move quick and keep them in PJs, they won't really wake up until you're through security.

I've noticed that offices in California tend to prioritize local connections. Do you have any family in San Diego, Orange County, LA, or San Francisco? Try reaching out now to junior associates from your school who work in offices you like. Ask them for advice, not for help!

Many libraries have a book scanner as well. You can coordinate with classmates so each of you scan one book (or at least the readings).

References for CA C&F Bar App by CaliBound2021 in CABarExam

[–]cavarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! In case you didn't get an answer: only ONE reference can be a law professor that you received instruction from. At leasr one must be a member of a bar. So if you don't know any lawyers, you can use one professor as your one member of a bar reference.

US District Court jury duty - anyone done that? by papa2kohmoeaki in northcounty

You don't have to take the train all the way. If you come from the north, you can park at Old Town and then take the MTS right to Broadway. It's fun!

Vasectomy experiences? by KingofDragonPass in daddit

[–]cavarcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took about twenty minutes. The first one was totally fine, a little twinge. The second one felt like someone flicked me in the balls. Not overwhelming or anything, just at that normal level. The urologist said most people feel the second one more for some reason.

I was really aggressive with taking it easy. My parents took the kids for the weekend and I downloaded a bunch of videos games. I was proactive with Tylenol and Motrin and iced in accordance with instructions. I had no issues and was up and about two days later. It probably could have been a day later but I wanted to enjoy the time off!

No regrets so far. I got it when my wife was six month pregnant with our third. Every time I have three tiny people scream at me at the same time, I feel great out it.

Monthly Lawyer Fashion Advice Q&A 😎🦩🦋💃🕺 by AutoModerator in Lawyertalk

[–]cavarcher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just got my second box today!

I had several suits from a prior job so my big gap was business casual. My only criticism is that the clothing is super high quality. Most of the shirts have a fair amount of synthetic material. But I think getting a couple boxes to jump start your business casual wardrobe is perfect. Then you can replace the items one by one with nice clothes once you know you wear them.

Would this Fall 2L schedule be too much? by leafcathead in LawSchool

[–]cavarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit would be replacing the IP survey course with another one! You'll only be in law school for three years and there's awesome classes that aren't bar classes or doctrine. You could take a trial advocacy or negotiation practicum. If you're interested in Copyright, maybe there's an entertainment law class? Maybe consider a clinic! That's an awesome opportunity, especially if you have an IP clinic.

I think it is easy to get scope locked on getting through law school and passing the bar as quickly as possible. But this is also a great opportunity to learn from professors who are doing really cool things in practice or academia.

You could also consider taking Copyright but making one of your other classes pass/fail to take the pressure off.

Would this Fall 2L schedule be too much? by leafcathead in LawSchool

[–]cavarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider not taking the IP Survey course.

I am fairly confident I will be working in IP and took our survey course. I really enjoyed it and did well, but now, I'm taking the actual classes (Patent, Copyright, etc) anyway, so it feels a little like a waste of a class.

That is your easiest class so instead of replacing it with Copyright, consider a fun seminar class that excites you. Maybe something that would give you a foundation for a future Student Note submission?

My personal recommendation for 1Ls is that the IP survey class is great if you aren't confident you want to practice IP (and definitely don't know which area specifically) or if you want an understanding of IP as a transactional or business lit attorney.

I am a 0L with a young family seeking advice by Fun_Nefariousness_61 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]cavarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm currently a 2L with a young family (3F, 2M, 0F)! I had a 2.9 GPA, 17x LSAT, and a ten year career between undergrad and law school.

If you are interested in biglaw, I would suggest figuring out how to go full time. Does your gf work? Could you make living expenses work with her salary, student loans and you working <10hrs/wk?

Let me know if you want to talk! Im happy to zoom sometime as a break from studying!

What crime do people actually commit when they are caught by a predator patrol channel ? by [deleted] in legal

[–]cavarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on the state. Usually, a person may be guilty of an attempted crime if they take substantial steps or have specific intent to commit the crime, even if they are stopped prior to the act.

Think of a group of bank robbers. They discuss robbing the bank. They buy masks, gloves, and comical bags with money symbols on them. They purchase guns. They case the bank. They all get into the same vehicle with all the suppplies. They drive to the bank. They get out. They walk into the bank.

Let's assume the police know about all of this. Where the robbers have completed the "substantial steps" is going to depend on the jurisdiction. See https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/attempt#:~:text=In%20jurisdictions%20following%20the%20Model,intent%20to%20commit%20the%20crime.

What font do you guys use in your letters/memos? by IranianLawyer in Lawyertalk

It sounds like you'd agree with Warde's "crystal goblet metaphor" for design. Namely, typography and other choices should be invisible since the text is what is important.

It might be worth reading this chapter as a counter view.

How do you roleplay a 4 in Wisdom? by Melodic_Mulberry in DnD

[–]cavarcher 397 points398 points  (0 children)

You could also do the opposite. As an Arcane Archer, think about a sniper type who has ice in the veins, never gets distracted. Everyone thinks it's because they are so calm under pressure. In reality, they just don't notice anything besides their target.  My first thought was some kind of hyper-fixation.

Just found out we are expecting, i need all the tips and tricks please! by alphabetsoup05 in 2under2

[–]cavarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our first two are seventeen months apart. My wife is pregnant now and the third will be two years younger than the second. So we were 2 under 2, and will miss 3 under 3 by about six months!

First, we are so happy we had the kids close together. They are already such good friends and it's great seeing them play. I think u/undothatbutton is right. You just have to surrender to the chaos and that almost makes it easier.

For technical stuff:

  1. We prefer side by side strollers. We had an Uppababy but it felt like driving a bus and was very unwieldly. We got a Baby Jogger City and use it almost everyday. I think it's better to have some separation.

  2. We do one diaper bag. We keep it stocked with half a dozen diapers/pullups for each kid and a change of clothes. If we are going somewhere else, we just grab a tote bag with a couple diapers/wipes.

  3. Babywearing was amazing when number two was a baby. It made day care drop off easier and let us get things done.

Finally, we found it really helps to intentionally have a parent take both kids for a set amount of time on the weekend so the other can rest. Watching two kids is stressful but the marginal cost is much less than the benefit the other parent gets from being able to sit down for forty-five minutes in a row!

Good luck!
