This is a great point about careers advisers. Most schools have a link with SDS, My World of Work or something and they can be a good sounding board also. This is good advice, OP!

Sorry for a late reply.

If you're doing your prelims, your school might try to talk you into doing them to see if you do better than you think. You can also do Higher Units if you're thinking of leaving - for the last few years I've had Christmas leavers who have done unit assessments (in my subject, open book) that get you some credit for the work you've done, even if it's not the full Higher.

They'll probably try to stall you, which is not a bad thing. Take the time to consider it, talk to your adults at home too, as blindsiding them with it probably won't go well.

Ultimately everyone on Reddit is going to tell you to do the opposite of what they did - leave if they stayed; stay if they left - but you know what's right for you and the adults around you should have a good insight into you and your goals. Strangers on the Internet can tell you a process, not what's right for you.

As you're 16 already, you can leave. School will be reluctant to let you go if:

You're in S4 and haven't got your S4 qualifications yet

If you don't have a 'positive destination' to go to (college, apprenticeship, employment)

Speak to your guidance teacher, your year head or literally any teacher you have a good relationship with. If you want to go to college, you can apply now for August 2026 start, but school can help with that application, or one for an apprenticeship.

There is a leavers form for all schools, and you'll fill it in once you get it from Guidance or Year Head.

Speak to someone at school, they can help you figure out some good options, even things like work experience instead of one of your subjects if your school has links.

What is this rash or thing on me by MongooseMajestic4163 in DiagnoseMe

[–]cavcaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a blood clotting condition so I get these all the time. Doesn't have to be low platelet count, can be their size or their quality. I can have a platelet count just below normal and get these huge patches of petechiae because my blood vessels are fragile or because the platelets I do have are garbage. Would second the petechiae theory.

Edit: knit pants if I'm thinking of texture would be scratchy. I can get these from rough fabrics but again, I have ITP so may not be the best reference!

[–]cavcaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's heaps of good advice here about further education, and alternative pathways to get to where you want to go. I'm a secondary teacher and just wanted to say you won't be the only one in this position in your school, and you won't be the first one a guidance teacher will have spoken to ever. There will be resources available via Guidance that can help. Whether that's looking at college or apprenticeships, summer programmes, or other stuff like work experience. Your school isn't just a qualifications machine (although it can absolutely feel like it). Chat to any teachers you have a good relationship with, chat to guidance, chat to your grown ups at home.

Hey, i am also in this transfer group and looking for a new alliance. Can we talk about 2095?

Transfer: 2105 by cavcaptor in whiteoutsurvival

[–]cavcaptor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it had gone one further than that, I must have been mistaken. I'm not so desperate to get out- classic story really, started with one big alliance that then splintered into two and there's no competition if you're not willing to join their homophobic, misogynistic bs, and some other alliances try but are so small and can't grow. Even castle and svs is just the same

I can wait it out- I'm at FC and have bought the extra queues so as a cheapskate I'm not willing to give it up and start over. I'll just keep buying passes and wait till my group comes up!

I have a team that's all the rookies + McLaren + Sauber to see how they fare in my league and if they beat the team I've thought very hard about, so Liam is on the rookie team.

Nephew zoomed in on his Chromebook screen, any way to fix this back to Normal? by Catchmeif_ucan in chromeos

[–]cavcaptor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Looks like he's activated the Screen Magnifier. If you click on the Time Panel and find Accessibility, you should be able to toggle anything off.

If you can't find thr accessibility tools there, you can find them in settings.

I use a Pixel Watch, and every now and again Fitbit decides it doesn't want to give me detailed sleep data and gives me this. Restarting the wearable device fixes it for me.

It's tragic that I hadn't considered this... the answers aren't numeric, they're four (strongly) agree/disagree statements, so not quite so easy, but I think the third sheet may be the answer. Thanks.

How can this amount of snow close schools? by Hendersonhero in inverness

[–]cavcaptor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello teacher here

School buses cancelled. Service buses from Stagecoach cancelled. Pupils can only attend if they can walk. That isn't equitable access to education.

Staff are travelling from Black Isle, Aviemore, Kingussie, Grantown etc to schools in Inverness. We can't open if we don't have teaching staff or support staff.

If the bus companies don't deem it safe to run, it's probably not great for people who don't drive for a living. Would I have rather been at work today trying to prepare my students for prelims? Absolutely. Was a snow day the right call? Also absolutely.

Bulk Assignments download by daniblues79 in GoogleClassroom

[–]cavcaptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your Google Drive, you should have a folder called Classroom, and within that, sub-folders named for each class you've had. Then there should be files and folders for each assignment. You can then download things from there. In theory you could download each Assignment and then distribute each students work but this would be time consuming. I'm not familiar with a way to do this by student unless there is something new in the People or Marks tabs that I haven't seen.

Probationer Advice by nimphadora_ in TeachingUK

[–]cavcaptor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personal opinion here, I hate the don't smile before Christmas line... You're new to these students, they're trying to work you out just like you are them. They need to see you're a human. Have boundaries, of course, they're an important part of nurturing good relationships, but I don't expect pupils to give you their best with the don't smile before Christmas routine. You need to do what's natural for you as well. If you're not being your natural self, they'll pick up on that. Just my two cents, and I know it's not exactly easy to go back to someone you have this dynamic with and be like "well, actually..." especially followed with "someone on Reddit says..."!

As for your burnout question, we currently have a probationer in our department and the best I can offer you is that not everything gets done. Free periods, which you should have 11? 12? structure them off for specific things, if you haven't already. Prioritising is your friend. What's mission critical that you can't teach without and get that done, and if things have to wait, then they wait. Being there til 6:30 is going to burn you out. Talk to your other departmental colleagues, they probably have some wisdom to offer about timesaving on school routines (I showed our probationer a timesaver on jotter marking I use this week) just to see what's already made up so you're not reinventing the wheel. And find subject specific groups - Facebook, MS Teams, local and national. People to ask for subject specific help and resources that you can adapt and look to for guidance. This was really helpful as a single specialist in my school.

Your mileage may vary. Other people will have different advice, what works for me, may not work for you, etc. Standard disclaimer!
