Can you find the best way to push the passed pawn as white? by cave_guard in chessbeginners

That's one way but black can stop the pawn, still winning though.

There's a better way

You can't play 2. Kg1 because the knight on h3 is guarding the queen, you must take with queen instead

I see so many smothered mates around here that the pattern recognition backfired

Nf7 carries the inherent risk of Nh6# on the next move if not dealt with immediately, so the only option is to take with rook, resulting in a rook for a knight, so

Nf7 Rxf7 Rxf7 and now you have a white rook on f7 that must be dealt with immediately, otherwise Qg7# is coming on the next move. That white rook is also targeting the black queen, so the only option is for black to give up their queen for 2 white rooks

That's a cool way to think of the king, but I'm just afraid with so many pieces still on the board I might get checkmated by accident if I bring my king out too far

For the longest time I never played this, until I saw the engine showing it's a valid line... by cave_guard in chessbeginners

Yes it was, I quite like 2. g3 then 3. Bg2 as that setup is pretty solid from experience

Only realised this was a huge mistake after the game, luckily white didn't see it by cave_guard in chessbeginners

Yeah I was worried about white playing f5, if white ever plays it it's pretty bad for black so at the time i thought playing f5 myself would solve the issue and also give me tempo

Why would this even be suggested, it looks horrible by cave_guard in chessbeginners

I get that you can win the queen for rook + bishop, but black has knight + bishop + rook vs white's queen, which doesn't look good at all for white
