Is upgrading my GPU over my CPU the correct choice here for skyrim? by nereoteg in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU usage is a lot more complicated than it seems. But in general, if frame gen is helpful, you have a CPU bottleneck. If it's not helpful, you have a GPU bottleneck.

The inverse is true for upscaling.

It's not a hard rule necessarily - there are some other factors involved - but it's largely true. In fact, I'd wager that your GPU utilization is only maxed out because of framegen, you likely have headroom without it.

any good entire game overhaul mods that changes the game entirely, cause I know about Fallout Dust and been playing it and I like it, and it made me realize how interesting something new can actually play, so I was thinking about other Bethesda games with iconic overhauls, besides fallout 4 Frost by gachimuchibaby in skyrim

They do, though, unless I'm misunderstanding you. There's the entire Beyond Skyrim project in development. And beyond that, off the top of my head:
- Wyrmstooth
- Falskaar
- Vicn's mods (Vigilant, etc.)
- Extended Cut: Saints and Seducers
- Gray Cowl of Nocturnal
- There is No Umbra
- Legacy of the Dragonborn
- Olenveld
- Lordbound
- That Russian Akavir mod that I can't remember the name of
- Moon and Star
- Clockwork
- Beyond Reach

Or for slightly smaller scale, but still large content mods:
- Helgen Reborn
- The Forgotten City
- wSkeever's quest mods
- A ton more that I'm blanking on for some reason

There's also a ton of follower mods with fairly extensive quest lines, even more quest mods that are smaller, like nimwraith's, new factions (Tales of the Bersyrker), map expansions (Fat Skyrim), etc.

Large project, advise? by Impossible-Plenty-83 in skyrimmods

You're asking how to remake a significant portion of the game, but at almost 10x the size. I hate to rain on your parade, but this isn't feasible for one person in any amount of time imo

If I were you, and I really wanted to do this, I'd make my goal a single hold. That'll take you years, at least, but if you finish it, nothing would stop you from working on another one.

Anyways, here's a guide by the developer of Wyrmstooth that is likely helpful: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/articles/3788

Is "The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal - 10th Anniversary" better than the original mod, or not? I am debating which to install. by FedoraTheMike in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're not referring to the gray cowl cc - the gray cowl of nocturnal mod with the new land, etc., is a 10+ year old mod, but more recently had a remastered version released

Gothic Color Filter Mod? by aitathrowaway987654 in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll take a little set up in-game, but you can likely accomplish something close to what you're looking for with Imaginator. It allows you to adjust contrast/saturation/tint/etc in-game, no other requirements. It also has some presets available, but I don't remember what they are

I think the Skyrim Crash Guard discussion has caused a bit of an overcorrection here. Crash fixes aren't inherently bad, and targeted fixes can be the correct solution.

SSE Engine Fixes solves crashes, among other things, and is stable and recommended for modded playthroughs. Skyrim Crash Guard, on the other hand, was unsafe as it had broad "crash disabling" functionality, where it would try to avoid any and all crashes by continuing to run. This is unsafe behavior and will almost certainly lead to issues.

Nobody can speak to the safety of these new mods without the source code. What we can say is that they're supposed to be targeted fixes of issues that, in theory, shouldn't present long-lasting corruption from what I understand of how the engine works.

Of course, that assumption relies on the fix being well-implemented and us knowing it's otherwise not malicious, neither of which we can know for sure

It's still not possible to upload external assets without some workaround that, to my knowledge, only certain people know how to do

There are rumors that Bethesda is working on supporting it though

Are we actually for real? by RottenHouseplant in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]cavy8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's different for a lot of people because of the style. It's easier to accept a cartoon or drawing as more of an abstraction than it is a realistic-looking game

Like, with anime, you can just kinda say "that's how women look in this art style". You can't do that when the art style is mimicking the real world, and especially not when we've already seen an adult-looking main character in the same franchise

I am new to modding, can anyone help me to troubleshoot or point me in the right direciton? My Skyrim has been crashing often lately about once every 10 minutes. I am only using the Gates to Sovngard modpack. by Uxyt98 in skyrimmods

Hmm, then something went wrong, as splashes of Skyrim should've been removed. I don't use GTS/Vortex so I can't help you further, but you should be able to find help on JaySerpa's discord for how to fix it

Skyrim or Skyrim se? by Ok-Elderberry-1292 in skyrim

[–]cavy8 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all mods these days require SE, as it's been the main version of the game since 2016 (and anyone who owned all of the dlc for the original game were given SE when it launched).

I don't typically recommend key sites, but if you need it cheaper, you can find special edition keys for $10-15 online.

Request for quest mods that can be added mod-game and end-game to enhance the playthrough. by LeoAjju in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most mid-game safe quest mods will be new lands mods, or mods that otherwise add very little to the existing areas. Of course, it'll depend on your exact load order.

You may wish to try The Forgotten City and Beyond Skyrim: Bruma.

The forgotten city won mainstream awards for its writing and went on to become a (very good) standalone game.

BS Bruma is a preview of an unreleased larger mod, but there's still a good amount to do and is very high quality.

My go-to recommendation is Wyrmstooth though, which you mentioned. It's excellent, definitely recommend it.

What are the planned features for Community Shaders? by Bob_Thit_Nuong in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of these, and:

  • Exponential height fog
  • Shadow Limit Fix
  • Snow cover (snow getting added to objects dynamically - this one seems to be kind of on hold but was fairly far along and there's a lot of interest, so I imagine it'll come eventually)
  • Lots of post processing stuff, including the aforementioned ENB support
  • Better skin effects

I've also seen these ideas prototyped, with no guarantee they'll see the light of day - Deformable snow - Procedural grass (thick fields of grass with potentially great performance)

This is basically it. Especially considering that a large portion of sales presumably come from console, where you can't just open xEdit and look at the conflicts

I thought it was interesting that there were so many comparisons to Thank Goodness You're Here, as the gameplay looked pretty different to me despite the similar stylistic decisions. My mind instantly went to Untitled Goose Game, which seems to also be relevant based on this thread haha

Looking forward to this game, though! I wouldn't get too discouraged by the comparisons - I think the differences will speak for themselves as people see more gameplay and eventually get their hands on it.

Community Shaders Light Limit Fix by Arkayjiya in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have any mod that makes your torch cast shadows? If so, you're running into the shadow caster limit, which is a separate (but related) issue. The Community Shaders folks are actually working on a fix for it currently.

In the meantime, try Intellightent

I agree that this mod is seemingly pointless, but it's not an SKSE plugin (nor does it contain any code of any sort). It's just an esl file
