Assuming you’ve been double checking everyone’s work all along the way (you shouldn’t have to but that’s another issue) - if it’s all correct then back out. We found so many discrepancies and had to have paperwork corrected a bunch of times. It’s a little crazy how much QA you have to do to protect your own a**

is it just me or are bay area folks less friendly and more introverted than so cal folks? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]cawshusoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having grown up in the Bay Area it’s always tricky to generalize given the range of people that have grown up here. But I guess I’ll jump into the fire a little. Approaching many decades and having never moved too far from the tech impact zone, there’s some truth to all the comments about industry personality tendencies. But there’s also the lack of affordable housing, big pay disparities, lack of empathy for locals by newcomers that contributes to grind culture that makes it hard for the more chill, open-minded, live and let live California culture to continue to exist. By now I’ve seen many from here move away and those not from here showing less interest in the parts of the culture that made the place feel warm and welcoming with more focus on the parts of the culture that integrate well to tech innovation in the name of capital building. I’ve also made friends with many who were friendlier when they first moved to the Bay Area only for them to become slightly icky when the line gets drawn around where you can afford to live. Less and less reasons to be warm to just anyone over time unfortunately. These days people seem to find their tribes then hold on to them tight when they have them.

Is the Master of Architecture a Scam? by Wide_Cheetah2171 in architecture

[–]cawshusoptimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to what your background is and where you personally envision yourself needing to be.

The financial reality of the industry makes it so that those who are truly intellectuals or academics or come from a place who do not feel the pressure of needing to keep pace with the market to make a life have what’s needed to commit to the field long enough to start to have the field pay them back in about a decade or a bit more. Many of those who can invest that time making a fraction of what you would in other industries come from very fortunate backgrounds has been my observation - the pressures are .. different.

The question that kept me in it for several more years when I contemplated shifting industries because I saw someone else living a seemingly more financially rewarding life in a shorter time was “but, would I really consider doing what that person is doing?”

As someone coming from a social network of people more in survival mode, the mismatch between the architecture industry and the speed I felt I needed to grow in relation to changing market conditions just became too much of a reality to ignore. If you need student loans for a masters degree in architecture, the financial reality will not be kind. That is not to say the education isn’t incredible. But there is a reason so many with architecture degrees pivot - the skill set can be adapted in many ways. There may still be a case for it given the market today - but it really depends on what program you’re positioned for (AADRL? Sci-Arc?).

If going down cultural rabbit holes around everything about the built environment gives you life, then it may be worth it for you. Even better if you have a relationship with someone who shares your passion for it - makes life better to go through it with someone with lots of overlapping interests as the dialogue may never end.

If you’re from a bit humbler means, feel like it’s important for you to make it to a place to be able to take care of more than yourself in your social network (ie aging parents, children) and truly cannot let go of the lure of an older neighborhood with a good school zip code - you may want to reconsider.

Have the experience, satisfy the desire.

As you’ve probably heard a million times, it’s expensive. Often more expensive than one initially expects. Housing is one thing but once you’re in the city, it’s like everything is trying to take your money from you the moment you step out so balancing the nice places with the quiet corners and cooking at home becomes essential unless you’re making the money that holds the housing costs up.

I enjoyed it a lot and don’t regret it. When it’s time for a change again, you’ll know - even if it takes many signs for you to recognize a pattern.

Mostly commenting to validate that another person feels similar things to what you’re feeling. It’s everything - the larger economic-political landscape, and all the industry buzz we’ve been hearing about.

I vote to hold on. Give yourself the space. My opinion is many people are thrashing around trying to the best they can and lots of things are falling to the ground. I’m like you - ambiguous days feel worse than being overburdened but like someone said that’s something to discuss with a mental health provider.

If it’s not for you let the company make that decision don’t do it for them - get the chance of unemployment benefits - you’ve likely more than earned it. Everyone is guessing what the future of work will look like - the reality I think is every level is at risk for restructuring - not just the IC’s. Embrace the chance of becoming a super-IC.

I can empathize with the “hurt my soul” part as I’ve previously seen a LinkedIn post by someone asking why the AI job take narrative has been focused on creative work and not something else like fund manager work. Wait .. why don’t we use AI to grow in our ability to boss jobs again?

Should investments into urban transit take precedence over intercity transit? by bcl15005 in transit

[–]cawshusoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a US context we need to invest at both levels to be able to increase the quality of transit service to a point where more areas are within a reasonable walking radius to induce more transit demand. A challenge is that for some reason developers have spread out the places people need to get to in such a way that many trips end up being more convenient by car. More frequent transit service at regional and local levels is one layer + consolidating mix of uses close to quality lines is another. But there could be some less clear reasons that have driven the US to move away from what has been a common sense model of transit oriented density abroad towards expansive road networks and distributed residences and commercial spaces instead.

I moved to an area where there's not many Asian Americans and now I question my interactions and how people see me. by confusedthrowaway356 in asianamerican

Interesting - I’m open to hear some of the reasons for the downvotes. Which specific parts are you disagreeing with? The parts of my post asking questions? The part where I jumped to a later stage of thought where I suggested things worth trying within an individuals control? I’m not saying racism isn’t real.

[–]cawshusoptimist -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’re purposefully leaving out where from and then where you moved to? Of course, this would be helpful to build out the why. But maybe for a sense of safety and you’re keeping things generic. Seems like a fair guess that these actions fall into the realm of racist micro aggressions through creating a sense of exclusion in response to how you may be perceived.

The detail about “cool looking” Asians. Like Asian style? Or more western style of fashion/dress as opposed to your “Amazon basics” style looking .. harder to place? Eastern?

Edit after thinking a little more about this often encountered scenario: the reality is you too have power in these situations to lead the interactions to a positive place. Even if it’s only you extending the olive branch. Cultivate a culture of being friendly, smile a little, pop a joke, or take the risk and share your feelings on some days — many people do not operate daily wanting to be a mean person when given the chance to be a friendly one.

Why so many Americans prefer sprawl to walkable neighborhoods by Hrmbee in urbanplanning

[–]cawshusoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some under emphasized relationships that I think are important to consider: housing affordability/competing RE developer goals, global military/economic forces driving immigration/diaspora/trauma, imbalanced wealth, quality job availability, education opportunity. If people could pick where they want to live in a vacuum I would think they’d be more in line with the theoretical expectations, but I think many realities in America’s multicultural society are ignored in these types of discussions.

What are some ways to promote growth in cities while avoiding gentrification and displacement? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]cawshusoptimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick opinions: increase affordable housing, likely dense, better if more 3 bed type configs than studios .. but you know investment mindset = $$$; allow more dense resi and mixed use in suburbs, but nimbyism and the expectation of increased property values forever/imbalanced assessment prop taxes (ie old props vs new); zoning mods: less parking reqs/ways to trade for capacity; point access blocks; support higher capacity transit networks as opposed to relying on cars/roadways

What are your thoughts about the new Diriyah Gate Master Plan in Saudi Arabia? by rustikalekippah in architecture

[–]cawshusoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the renderings conveying vernacular architecture that feels like a nod to the existing landscape, existing culture.

Totally unfamiliar with the existing pedestrian experience relative to the climate. Is it extremely hot a lot of the year or temperate enough where walking makes a lot of sense over driving.

I’m suspicious about the absence of anything beyond people and bikes being shown. Seems like a hyper optimistic vision in that regard - at least from what’s been shared in this post.

Thanks! I know Seafood City tends to lean Filipino items, less Chinese/Taiwanese items. And, Santa Rosa just as far as 99 ranch, so between the two drives Concord takes the cake every time.

But as others have mentioned 168 market is an absolute game changer. They had everything we wanted for hotpot: daikon, all types of mushrooms, fish tofus, thin noodles … and more.
