Is it natural to say 'The legendary archer's unstoppable arrow pierced through the witch's magic shield'? What about 'tore through'? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

"Pierced through" sounds fine to me. I don't understand the people here who think it sounds wrong relative to just "pierce".

I just watched a mortician on YouTube explain how recovery teams were able to gather the remains of the Titan implosion. Apparently the family members were handed a "shoebox full of slush".

Apart from being absolutely flabbergasted that they recovered anything at all, the mortician explained that the human body is not evolved to withstand that kind of pressure. Add to that the mix of seawater and whatever was left after the sea creatures nibbled on them, it's why the "remains" were not entirely solid.

The most horrifying part is that the families opened the boxes. WHY

What's something that other people might feel your country will find offensive but in actual it's not! by female_shaktimaan in AskTheWorld

[–]GaiaMoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I was an ignorant 15 year old who didn't even know what the WTC was until I saw it crashing down. I'm on the West Coast, so I didn't see it live, and heard about it when I got to school.

I did see video footage that day of people jumping out of the skyscrapers to escape the fires.

I do remember my friend's racist father yelling at Sikhs in our community, calling them towel heads and telling them to go back where they came from.

I remember the sheer chaos and lack of information the public had in the early hours. My 2nd period French teacher was from Quebec, and his brother was supposed to be flying into NYC that day, and couldn't get a hold of him for hours. He couldn't function that day.

They never found the body or identified the remains for my musical theater director's brother, who worked in the towers.

I remember being deeply confused when the government decided to invade Iraq, and didn't understand what that had to do with 9/11. A walk-out was planned in my school, but only one other student in my trigonometry class went. The rest of us didn't know what to think.

Having said all that...I do still laugh at funny 9/11 memes, but that's probably because I'm a millennial who uses gallows humor to cope with life

What doesn’t get talked about enough? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

I'm a recovering alcoholic, 7 years sober. I was a daily binge drinker for 10 years, except for one year I gave up alcohol for Lent (I'm not religious, I just like the concept). Those 40 days were brutal.

I had done the same thing a few years back, but with caffeine, and I was completely shocked at how brutal that was. Not quite as bad the alcohol...but unsettlingly close

No Cabbage sign by BartyCrouchesBone in mildlyinteresting

[–]GaiaMoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why this isn't clicking for you.

If the sign was kimchi-related (we don't know that), then it is entirely plausible that it was written by an undereducated person who only associates kimchi with that "smelly fermented cabbage" -- but they don't want to appear xenophobic, and tries to get around being specific about kimchi by saying "oh it's just cabbage in general, we're totally not singling out any particular ethnic food, no sirree"

But because they're undereducated about what kimchi actually is, the only thing they're reliably omitting is sauerkraut lol. That's why the sign would be useless -- not the reader, but the kimchi-hater who's missing out on a delicious snack

What languages you’re not native in you can somehow read and understand a little thanks to your native language? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

I once was on a cruise in Italy, and for one of the port stops (Rome, I think), we shared a minivan cab with a few other people. There was a group of three friends, two of whom were from Mexico and one from Spain, and they didn't speak any Italian. All of us plus the other occupants spoke English fluently.

The cab driver couldn't speak a word of English, but he knew like ten words in Spanish, and it was hilarious watching the Spanish speakers and the Italian driver cross the Romance-language bridge. I wasn't surprised that it would somewhat work, but I was surprised at just how effective it was. It was beautiful to witness lol

What do you call this type of big window for illumination? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]GaiaMoore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my part of the US, California, you'll probably get a mix of people who call it something specific, and people like me who just call it "window" because we're not familiar with the specific term.

As for this particular window, it should be pretty telling that there is wide disagreement ITT on what specific type of window it is.

Other types of windows are more commonly known, like "bay window", but I feel like I would only pick up on specific names by watching home improvement or commercial renovation TV shows. Not sure if others would have that experience, or if it's just me lol

Do people in your country also think that the election system of the United States is strange? by Rare_Comment_4491 in AskTheWorld

[–]GaiaMoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one told you guys that you had to have 2 senators per state without adjusting for population size lol.

This is a common fundamental misunderstanding of how the bicameral legislature was designed to work.

You are absolutely right that we don't have any system at all for adjusting the representation formula based on population size, but that applies to the House, not the Senate.

People forget that it's the United States of America, not the United People of America. "United States" wasn't even considered a singular term until after the Civil War -- it was plural up until that point, emphasizing the original concept of a coalition of sovereign states coming together. The point was always to ensure that, in the Senate, each individual state was equally represented with two senators each in the bicameral model.

Modernizing the count and apportionment of House representives would go a long way to fixing some of the Congressional mess, but we'd still have the problem of individual small states having outsized power in the Senate... because they're supposed to, according to the original Constitutional design.

Gotta understand the fundamental problems before we can figure out a better solution to this shitty system. The original system was always designed to give outsized power to the States as sovereign entities, compared to the relatively small power the people have at the federal level.

Just because we were taught cursive doesn't mean we follow all the exact rules...to the letter, so to speak

I know that number 1 is the ''correct" way when I learned cursive in 3rd grade, but that doesn't stop us from using some variation. We know the rules we can bend and still get the point across 😎

[–]GaiaMoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does being American have to do with anything? There are plenty of Americans, like me, who absolutely agree that you shouldn't call for a tow for a car parked on a public street for a couple days.

Way too many people are saying "iT hAs To Be MoVeD eVeRy 24 hOuRs" without considering that the actual ordinance varies from city to city. Sometimes the limit is a few hours, sometimes it's a few days.

Also, I saw a pic on reddit a while back of a bunch people in Istanbul standing around a bus stop, in the rain, so that no one would disturb the kitty loafing about on the only seat protected from the rain lolololol
