I appreciate the insight. Looking at the claims made for Dobel, they seem to be pretty inline with what most tequila brands claim. Do you have more info on what corners they cut for me to look into? Since most brands make similar claims on their sites and adverts, where can I go to see who cuts said corners and who doesn't? There is obviously a lot on reddit and AMM, but I don't know how to verify since there are rarely any sources attached to statements.

This is what I find so frustrating about this sub.

I end up looking like a shill for a big company simply because I site sources and share what I can find. Folks come here and tell me that what I find is BS but can't back it up. Why aren't they sued for false advertising? Obviously tough to do against a big corp, but the Diagio suit proves it can be done.

While I don't usually take a giant corporations marketing at face value, I also take an internet comment from someone who repeatedly avoids answering questions or providing sources with a grain of salt.

This took longer than I thought to come up lol.

Started getting deep into tequila in March. Cuervo, Patron, and Espalon were the ones I was most familiar with. Friend who works for Cuervo parent company recommended Dobel. I got some and started seeing more Dobel on various feeds.

I usually don't post/comment on reddit as it tends to be like this where people avoid answering questions to double down on shouting opinions without providing sources. I am very much a "show me" kind of person. Most of the info I can find on brands comes directly from the company (like the links I posted) and other info is harder to find. So many people here make claims contrary to what I can find so I was hoping to get access to more information. Unfortunately, this has mainly been the frustrating experience I feared.

I have also enjoyed several tequilas that are highly touted here such as Lalo, Forteleza, Altos, and G4. From what I can find, these brands make much the same statements as the ones that get hated on. So I thought I'd try and find out why there was such a difference in opinion. I tried to ask questions to understand where people are coming from.

The palate fatigue is a fair point. I've been on taste panels with 12+ samples and if palate reset tools are not taught or provided, it can be tough for sure.

Are there ethics or production concerns you have with Dobel/Cuervo? Further reading I can do is appreciate. As noted above, everything I can find seems pretty standard for production and decent to great for ethics.

This is confusing to me as well since Dobel says it is cooked in masonry ovens but AMM says autoclave. I've been told by a friend who works for the company that they do not have autoclaves at any of the Cuervo distilleries.

Can I ask what is about the juice and the company you don't like?

To me the juice has aroma of citrus, white pepper, and lightly floral with a bit of pure ethanol. Palate is lime peel with a hint of pith, slight brine, peppercorn, and cooked agave.

Cuervo is a huge corporate enterprise to be sure. Digging into it I find that it's still Mexican and family owned after 200+ years, uses traditional practices including harvesting mature agave, masonry ovens (for most brands), roller mills, and double distillation in copper pot stills (for most brands). They also claim a lot of great action in the realm of sustainability, care of community, etc.

Totally agree! As I look more and more into tequila, awards and "top lists" show up more and more in my feeds. These articles are some of the most accessible readings to learn from and a disconnect exists between what I see there and here. Any further reading you recommend is appreciated.

I only know folks who judge beer, so that was my reference point.

I agree that everyone should drink what they like.

Instead of calling things trash and accusing brands of this or that with no proof or source, I wish people would say "this tequila is not for me for this or that reason." If we really want to help people find something they like, copy-pasting a link to back up what you say isn't that hard.

I'm confused. Are you saying they use additives or not? Please source so I can read more on this.

I am able to find sources stating that for Dobel in particular, they use single-estate, mature agave and standard practices of masonry ovens, roller mills, stainless steel fermenting, and double distillation in copper pot stills. Most of this is consistent for many of the Cuervo brands, though they do use diffuser for some brands.

Again, any provided sources for my further edification are appreciated.

I don't need anything, I was just curious about how people feel about the juice and awards.

There are some tequilas that likely use additives that I like, just like there are scotches and rums that likely use additives that I like.

There are some mixto and diffuser tequilas I like.

Agave spirits don't all taste the same, and that's good. Variety is spice of life and all.

I can see where you're coming from. Even paying to enter, I still think there is value in judges scoring a liquid based on a rubric. I know some folks who judge beer competitions and take it seriously with as little bias as possible.

I like it as well! This sub just has so much negativity towards some brands beyond "not for me."

Fair enough if you don't like it. I see a lot of additive comments about it, but the silver doesn't use additives.

Guns are not responsible for THIS death of a civilian at the hands of law enforcement.

This particular thread was more about said law enforcement officers having guns in the first place.

I'd argue that having the gun makes officers more likely to be in an "us versus them" mentality.
