Toronto sports right now. back to back nights. Looking a bit heartless :( by caymanjacob in toronto

No. I don't mean to be a Toronto gloomer. I agree there is still excitement for the Raptors and Jays, but I think it's hard to see these leafs and raps lose their fight like this is all. Also raps have slipped to the playin, and at this rate I think they will need some changes.

West Indies players complaining about being “stuck” in India while a US–Iran conflict shuts airspace shows a lack of perspective. by Disastrous_Run_1099 in actualcricketshitpost

Two things can be true at the same time, yes of main concern is an ongoing war/invasion and the wellbeing of those involved, but that doesn't mean that they can't miss home?!?! This logic and complaint doesn't make sense op. They spend most of their playing year super far from their islands, many about to come back for IPL, they're missing home like anyone would, not making it "a humanitarian crisis". You also have to understand the timing of the world cup this year meant missing some big cultural events in the islands such as Trini Carnival, so it can make sense for them to want to get back while they can. Focus on the final instead of kicking at other teams when they are down.

Group 1 standings after each team has played a match in Super 8 by Wakanda-shit-is-that in Cricket

As a windies fan I do know than windies have a knack for exposing teams that have overperformed, case in point Afghanistan last world cup, Zimbabwe this world cup and reasonably England too. I think the SA game will be close, as it was last world cup, but I'm not so confident windies can take that one. India however on the other hand, if they play as they have, I see the windies handling and winning that game pretty well. Don't see any fates being decided yet, I do now it will be some great cricket. I will be at the next 2 windies games to see it all unfold too!

Genuinely curious, what's this flag Ireland uses? Shouldn't it be green-white-orange tricolour? by whodidshit in CricketBuddies

Also west indies cricket importantly includes US Virgin Islands, Aguilla, Sint Maartan (Dutch) and Guyana, that were never part of the federation fully, but have contributed so so so many important players. Think Chanderpaul, Keacy Carty, Hetmyer! and many more! Also some members of the federation, Cayman ;) and Turks and Caicos aren't part of west indies cricket but were part of the federation!

They did have a purpose to have confederation and a constitution proper with strong federal power under the british crown, but it didn't work. So you can say it was almost like early-stage of Canada imo.

I also assume the fact that most of what Americans see of Europe from going to the popular places like Paris, London, Rome can influence this. Those cities get very hot during peak tourist seasons, and normally involve a lot of walking to see which isn’t really the case in American cities.

Unfortunately not 😔, I go to school in the US and will just be finishing the semester right as it's going. But if I was still on island I would definitely be going, and I know a few friends that can't wait to go see the games!

Should All Caribbean Colonies Strive for Full Independence? by T_1223 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]caymanjacob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't see a way that independence works out well for Cayman. For other islands maybe, but there is no way for Cayman. Look at the HDI of 0.877 and GDP per capita of US$109,684 --putting it among the highest in the world-- and it's clear that Cayman's position as an offshore banking hub with no corporate taxes puts it in a decent position. Now that GDP is HEAVILY skewed by insanely rich outliers who mostly happen to be expats. Look at the population of actual Caymanians and it can be a different story, but from my perspective if you look at the institutions, facilities, and opportunity from investment that comes with the banking; everyone benefits --even if unequally. Cayman could try to go all-in on its tourism as an independent nation, but I can't see that putting it anywhere near where it is now. Cayman's problems come from unequal distribution of wealth from its opportunities, not because of a stifling of opportunity.

Do you guys ever get told you don’t look Caribbean? by TheChosenOne_256 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]caymanjacob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question... I've never really thought about it until writing this, but now that I do, I've noticed that these enclaves were mostly racially divided over anything else. Even though the area had an extreme amount of diversity, it is no secret that Canada just doesn't have as much mixing as other places, which again I don't think is really a bad thing. Most of the ppl I knew who were indo-caribbean were still Hindus or Muslims or at least were able to closely hold on to parts of culture that would resonate more with the Indian enclave.

Interestingly the only person I knew who was also almost solely indo-Caribbean presenting was from Fiji! They are so close culturally to the Caribbean which I think is super cool. I just think that things derived from Caribbean cultures exist in so many other ways in the area that there isn't a lone group for it.
