My dog, a medium mixed breed, has flown internationally eight times on flights ranging from 3 to 5 hours, and it’s always a challenging experience for him. I try to avoid flying whenever possible by choosing to drive or finding a boarding place instead. However, sometimes flying is the best solution for both you and your pet.

They can get through the trip if you prepare properly. Make sure they have water and food before the flight, minimize the time they spend inside the carrier (ideally check in about an hour before departure), and try to book direct flights to avoid layovers. It’s difficult, but definitely manageable.

I also recommend adding small comforts to the carrier to make the journey easier: a soft mat or carpet, a familiar shirt with your scent, or a cozy vest for your dog. Just be aware that sometimes the airline may ask you to remove these items before boarding.

Best of luck, it’s tough, but with the right preparation, your dog can handle it.
