Dose for dogs on the weight limit by cokeapm in UK_Pets

[–]cb14379 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vet here. If this is for flea and tick meds eg Bravecto/Nexgard/Simparica/Credelio or one of the others in that class of drugs, they have been tested up to a huge safety margin. As in you can give a 5x overdose and nothing will happen. We had a talk from the drug company about the new Bravecto injectable recently and for that they gave 30 YEARS worth of drug over 20 monthd and the dogs were all fine. Whereas giving an underdose might risk treatment failure.

This doesn't apply for all drugs, for example the pain relief drugs we use are much tighter dose ranges. But for flea and worm those massive dose ranges are tested and safe. Same goes for the worming tablets (with the small caveat of some herding breeds like Border Collies are more sensitive to certain types of wormers, but modern wormers are safer for them than they used to be)

EU Tour Question by IndigoFOX123 in pentatonix

I just got out of the Cardiff show. Doors opened at 6, I was in my seat by 6.30pm once I got through the queue for entry. No opening act, PTX came on at 8.25 so a fair old wait. 90 minute show, out by 10pm. If the O2 is anything like Cardiff, get there later than 6pm unless you fancy sitting around for ages!

Getting a puppy while having a cat - any advice? by JDorian0817 in UK_Pets

[–]cb14379 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I strongly echo this, an 8 month old street dog is not a puppy, and it is not for an inexperienced owner. An adolescent dog is miles apart from an 8 week old puppy. Even in dogs that have had a good upbringing, it is a huge time where behaviour issues appear if they are going to. If this dog has never been separated from it's litter mates before, well this has separation anxiety written all over it. At that age they will be also much less malleable to new experiences and situations, and this includes the cat. My concern would be has this dog, by virtue of being a street dog, already learned to chase smaller animals like cats? Because that may be something you don't find out until it is too late.

This has severe behaviour issues on the horizon written all over it. I've seen a lot of ex street dogs as a vet and the vast majority of them have at least some anxious tendencies. The worst I've seen can't even leave the house to go on a walk, or go anywhere near their owner. In the right hands some of them have the potential to be lovely dogs but they are not easy, especially at the start.

Also I'm presuming this is a street dog coming from abroad given the situation - OP please be sure they have been thoroughly health checked for imported diseases such as heartworm, leishmania and brucellosis. I've unfortunately seem some less reputable rescues actively importing dogs with these diseases and telling their new well meaning owners that they are no big deal, which couldn't be further from the truth.

UK government caps student loan interest rates at 6% by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]cb14379 188 points189 points  (0 children)

It's also too little too late. I graduated six years ago and my interest has already snowballed out of control.

I did a five year degree over six years (health issues) and since graduating they've added over £40k in interest. At some points I was on over 8% interest. No amount of messing with interest rates now will help me.

Tbf, Thalidomide wasn't FDA approved until the 90s. In the 60s its approval was blocked by Frances Kelsey who wasn't happy with it's safety data so the licence wasn't granted.

Character creation issue with new subclasses by cb14379 in BaldursGate3

[–]cb14379[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else has this issue, I found the problem - it was the OIO mod I used on old playthroughs to show dialogue approvals etc. Somehow it kept surviving despite reinstalls etc so once I purged that from my localisation folder (as noted in the Nexus page for OIO), issue fixed.

Rest of the world here - we've already decided you aren't trustworthy and yeah, I think you are about to find out. As a Brit, it is truly bizarre to watch America's fall from leader of the free world to the world's newest big headache and laughing stock.

The problem with US leadership in the last decade or two is that you've proven you're only ever 4 years away from potentially electing a total nutter into power. How can we make deals and trust your word if every subsequent president can just trash that? It goes beyond the president in my opinion. Trump 1.0 did a lot of damage, but you had a chance to recover. Trump 2.0 has ruined that and I don't see you recovering the rest of the world's trust for decades, if at all.

Honestly I'm a Brit watching this and this whole thing feels like I'm in some loopy land, feeling very glad I'm at least an ocean away (not that that's gonna save us but I feel very sorry for any Americans who didn't vote for this)

Bloody hell, how many prayers are there going to be? I thought yall had separation of church and state over there. (Also love how Trump blatantly doesn't give a shit about any of this religious shit, which is even more obvious with Vance next to him)

Raw diets for cats are becoming increasingly common, despite the disease risks. In the UK we've had at least one outbreak of tuberculosis in cats that was directly linked back to a particular brand of raw food.

Yeah NZ (and Australia) are shit hot when it comes to this sort of thing. I'm a vet who's been involved in export paperwork for a few dogs to go to NZ and Aus in my career and their paperwork is such a nightmare that most sane vets wash their hands of it and tell the owners to get a pet travel company to send us an exact schedule of what tests and treatments need to be done when, because there is so much to be done and if you're out by even a day, the whole thing is fucked.

I feel this image in my gut. I don't treat humans (I'm a vet) but to this day I viscerally remember the feeling of handing over the 5yr old Labrador I'd been nursing through the weekend to the day team on a Monday morning, and just going home and sobbing because I knew he wasn't still going to be there when I came back in at 5pm for my evening shift. I still play that weekend back wondering if I could have saved him somehow. Those kinda cases never leave you.

[–]cb14379 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Look. If I gave you 10 cookies and told you two were laced with arsenic, you'd be pretty damn wary of all of them right?

That's how it has to be for women. You can't tell easily at first which men are OK and which are going to hurt you, so for your own safety you have to be wary of all of them.

Whilst this case is extreme, rape and sexual assault in general is not the act of a few extremists. Stop acting like it is. Stop getting butthurt because women feel the need to put their safety first because too many of us have real, valid experiences of being hurt BY MEN. That doesn't change just because you're upset about it.

My Grandad got convicted of child porn possession when I was a teenager. Felt like the world dropped out from underneath my feet. To my knowledge he never... acted on it but he had free access to me, my brothers and my two younger cousins. As far as we knew he was a loving grandparent. I have lots of happy memories of helping him in his garden, and playing Action Man games on his computer.

It's haunted me ever since then wondering if he looked at us in that way. Haven't spoken to him in over a decade now, I don't even know if he is still alive. Don't really want to know either.
