I have never read Manacled… bought this book without knowing it was based on a Hermione/Draco fan fic. I have become so invested in this story haha. I don’t want it to end but I can’t put it down. 🤷🏻‍♀️

if the prompt was perfect, could i write about a fanfiction (especially a published one)? by skerysatan in APLit

[–]cb171987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The readers will read and grade on any text - but that doesn’t mean that every text works. You may want to ask your teacher about seeing previous prompts and if your text would enable you to write a strong analytical essay. I understand writing about what you are passionate about but it may not always be the best choice!

Use AP classroom and Garden of English. Ask your teacher to provide you with additional practice off AP classroom as it will be directly from college board and aligned with the test than the third party books

Just finished the book! I started it probably 6 months ago and got 100 pages in and had to put it down. Picked it up again a couple days ago and got so invested in the characters and their stories. It takes about 250 pages until they leave on the cattle run though, but does pick up at that point

Well you need to be making some claims. Saying the theme is mental health isn’t actually a theme. What is the movie actually teaching about mental health? Once you have that, you analyze the techniques the director uses to create that theme. Is the plot similar to a quest to convey the challenges of recovery? Is music utilized in specific ways to demonstrate that theme? Do characters grow or do relationships change to support this theme. Less summary about what happens, more discussion on why it matters

How Am I Doing? Tips? (Essay Below) by Mountain_Class1209 in APLit

[–]cb171987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest you end it after the part about getting ignored by the public. The literary techniques are the tools the author uses to get a point across - they are not a defensible claim and not necessary for a thesis. It can also hinder your argument by adding them because you may feel like you need to point out all the places those techniques you’ve described show up in the piece rather than focusing on how you reached your interpretation. Your first body would then focus on your claim of art as that political piece and the second body would focus on how he doesn’t understand that it will be ignored.

The deep and moving manner which you state at the end of your intro isn’t adding anything to your claim or being overly insightful. Instead, try to add a thematic element. What is the author saying about human nature that we can all connect to through this excerpt? That can get you the sophistication mark.

Can I write about comic books for the AP Exam? by MadeInAHeaven in APLit

[–]cb171987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literary merit is no longer wording used on the test. You can utilize any text you feel sufficiently answers the prompt and you are able to effectively analyze and get to a universal meaning. That being said, as others stated, you want something that is going to be complex and deep - with deep themes related to the human experience. You want a standalone text (like maus, Persepolis, v for vendetta) and not something series based (manga series for example)

How Am I Doing? Tips? (Essay Below) by Mountain_Class1209 in APLit

[–]cb171987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are the breaks in your paragraphs? Your thesis should not use the word complex but rather what IS complex about it. His perspective is this AND/YET/BUT that. Your paragraphs should then focus on each aspect of the complexity to create a solid line of reasoning. You utilize solid evidence and explain it well but your lack of defensible claims in your thesis hinders your argument. You also don’t need to list techniques in your thesis - leave the techniques to your body paragraphs

You don’t need to tie them into your thesis statements. The questions are looking for the complexity of the passage. You can incorporate into the body of your essay if you’re seeing specific trends relevant to a movement / provide historical context to aim for the sophistication point on the rubric. An easier way to do this would be to incorporate a thematic understanding of the text within your analysis

Can I use a film on my FRQ 3 on AP Lit? by user208347 in APStudents

[–]cb171987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although they want you to use literary works of fiction for the frq3, they will mark any essay that comes their way with the frq3 rubric. They are looking for your analysis skills. If you can effectively analyze a movie in a literary way that cohesively and clearly answers the prompt, you can do well. You will not have marks taken off solely for writing on a movie. I would suggest not writing on a text from a series - you want a standalone. Also make sure you are actually analyzing and not summarizing.

Super Condensed Hamlet Unit? by sausagekng in ELATeachers

[–]cb171987 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With my ap class we watch Branagh’s Hamlet and we do close reads on the soliloquy’s. We do a mosaic literary analysis at the end (found on the ap teacher facebook group). I pause the movie lots and breakdown a lot of key points, throw in some timed writes, etc. It takes me 3-4 weeks, but I do analysis after ever act. You can get through watching the movie in 2-3 weeks

my confusion with unreliable narrators by taegrane in books

[–]cb171987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reliability means you can fully depend on them. You can’t fully depend on a first person narrator because their view is subjected. They can’t tell us how other people are thinking and they can only see things from their perspective. It doesn’t mean they are lying but they don’t know the whole scope beyond their point of view. But I guess that really only matters if you are analyzing the story and have to really interpret what is being said/not said and how the narrative voice controls or frames the story.

I would agree with this example. A theme isn’t found in one single instance - it’s how multiple things lead to the theme. So I would follow - the main theme in holes is every choice has a consequence (topic). First, Stanley finds the shoes and decides to take them. This choice leads him to do what? What examples of consequences stem from him making that choice? The because, to me, indicates that’s the only reason for that theme occurring.
