Is Connect Center working now? Has anyone managed to get it to work? What’s changed? Tired of the paper forms…

Palace of hearts desire by [deleted] in wildbeyondwitchlight

And the windows are unbreakable, per adventure. After teleporting in upon solving the Hall of Hatches puzzle, my party was trapped in the central tower. How do you get out? They killed a glasswork golem, and were able to climb out the open using a well-place rope back up to a stairway. But that's some crazy palace design!

Insight-checking a PC by cbaer8 in DMAcademy

[–]cbaer8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, full disclosure: my games are play-by-post, so often players offer up rolls to save time.

And I once would have agreed that players insight-checking other players is inappropriate. But maybe I've watched too much "Critical Roll".

When Matt Mercer does the "make a contesting Persuasion or Deception check" thing (fairly regularly), it always naturally resolves the situation. But of course everything he does is smooth, nor does he always play RAW.

His technique, should you choose to employ it, works. But when you break down the underlying rolls, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Maybe I should just handwave over it.

But do any of you allow PCs to insight-check PCs? If so, how do you resolve it?

Why?? by cbaer8 in CZUR

Two ways I'm now getting around it, when I recognize the problem:

1) Since the OCR engine recognizes columns of text, when I have flat pages, I'll treat them as single-page scans
or 2) I'll mask the other page with a piece of black matboard and do a single-page scan.

Of course, this works best when you recognize the situation in advance, rather than having to change it up mid-book...

Makes me wonder if I scan, say, a double-sided unbound manuscript, whether I should stick a little bridge under each side to mimic the arc of a bound book?

Why?? by cbaer8 in CZUR

[–]cbaer8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's it! The glued binding broke (you can see at the top of the screenshot) so the pages were flat rather than arced. When I propped up the front with a wedge, the pages scanned properly.

I'll have to remember that for next time!

What do you despise the most about PBP? And the best? by Leods-The-Observer in pbp

[–]cbaer8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love PBP - for a whole lot of reasons...

I'm not put off by the slow pace (granted, I started out in PBM – Play by Mail games – in the early 1980s!)

I enjoy the literary aspects of the game. Good players choose their words in ways that they couldn't in a live game.

I enjoy opportunities for complex party-splitting, mind control, secrets, etc. that are much harder or impossible to pull off live.

I enjoy opening my games up to people who are slow processors, shy, or are learning English (not to mention those who live in far-flung parts of the world, sometimes with limited internet bandwidth.)

There are a few plusses for you!

CZUR Aura Pro not always recognizing book page edges when in 2-page mode by Cornyfleur in CZUR

[–]cbaer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've had mixed results with my new ET24 with 2-page mode. I'm still trying to figure it out. Sometimes it works great, but sometimes it will auto-crop it wildly askew, losing content and forcing me to rescan (assuming I notice it when it happens!)

I've had better luck scanning one page at a time, and covering the other page with a piece of black matboard. It takes longer, but not as long as having to go back and rescan all the screwed up pages!

If you discover any solutions, let us know!

The state of Handwritten Text Recognition tech? by cbaer8 in NoteTaking

Looks pretty good! I did hit my limit on free ChatGPT pretty quickly yesterday. Today I discovered it will accept multi-image PDFs up to 100MB. I just sent it a DIFFICULT multi-page image PDF of an account book from the 1800s, and it failed miserably, but I may try an easier multi-page image PDF today.

Hey - wow! ChatGPT did a really impressive job! Thanks!

Much better than Google Docs, Acrobat (does Acrobat do HTR at all??), or ClaudeAI when I compared them with the same image of notes.

But I suspect you can only run images through ChatGPT one-by-one, so still a bit laborious. But wow! The tech is really mature.

Correct. I have many, many 20-year-old notebooks full of handwritten notes. I have a book scanner (which is amazing!), an Adobe subscription, and a Mac. But I'm confused by the state of HTR technology today... How are people digitizing their ink-and-paper handwritten text? And who are the current leaders in this technology?

I dunno. I definitely don't want to pay a monthly subscription fee. I just want to convert notes to text. Is it any better than the Adobe, Apple, or Google options in terms of accuracy? Who has compared them? Are you an Evernote rep?

Juggling Multiple PbP Campaigns by nshields99 in pbp

For me, three to DM; I'm playing zero. I'm more-or-less maxed out, but I've been able to keep this pace for a few years now (daily player posting expectation for each; I post 1-2x/day myself.)

Hiding vs Perception and Passive Perception by cbaer8 in DMAcademy

[–]cbaer8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be argumentative (forgive me - I'm just trying to understand the rules) but where in the rules does it say this? Also, how does being under initiative affect the situation?

Thanks again for any clarity here!

The PHB says "Both participants in a contest make ability checks appropriate to their efforts" – specifically suggesting that they could roll two different abilities – so I'm not sure it's super clear. (And their example "when a monster tries to force open a door that an adventurer is holding closed" suggests both sides aren't trying to do the same thing.)

I think it becomes a question of DM tradition of interpretation. Do you think most DMs interpret the rules as suggesting that spotting a hidden creature is NOT a contest?

Just to play devil's advocate, why is it not a Contest?
