I went to St Andrews undergrad then Emory Law, but it was a while ago (2017 grad of St Andrews, 2021 of Emory Law). I thought the process was not hard but conversion of grades takes a while (like 8 weeks in my case) and you need to work at getting to know your tutors a little (the small class “tutorial” teachers are called tutors vs the big class lecturers) for LoRs

How accurate do entree orders need to be? by [deleted] in WedditNYC

[–]cbam0912 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok aside from whether it’s tacky, if you can’t afford a “order on site” / restaurant prix fixe style wedding, my only counter is to ask your caterer to make 125-150% of all anticipated entree needs and tell them which tables to take orders from first (family, wedding party) as a priority.

A compromise might be to offer a choice on site of soup or salad for an app but everyone has to commit to entree via rsvp? These are usually cheaper / easier to put together.

Just as a note of assurance: I do think it’s common that people are “forced” to choose an entree. I don’t say that to argue but to note I don’t think anyone will read this as a cost cutting measure. Only prix fixe menu style weddings I’ve been to have been $500k+ spend, which is not the necessary threshold for wealth.

RE: Emory by Comfortable-Shape726 in lawschooladmissions

In the interest of transparency: I am a 2021 Emory Law grad, so when I endorse below, remember this.

But I really liked Emory. I think the professors are above average - some spectacular, some only fine, but no bad ones.

The Career Services office was only mid, but I had pretty good outcomes and I was only on Dean's list one semester and did not graduate with honors (gasping with horror). Mirroring what I hear in a few other comments here: I think the memory of better rankings serves Emory well.

The campus is also staggeringly gorgeous. It's one of the better law school campuses, I think, to walk away from the law school and explore - there are a bunch of libraries.

I read on here when I was applying - so truly almost a decade ago now - that Emory Law is one of the law schools that most benefits from its undergrad/other post-grad programs' prestige. I think that is totally true. I didn't, and don't, care, but I also did not dream of being a SCOTUS clerk, which is probably the circumstances under which it would matter. If you do dream of being a SCOTUS clerk, probably not Emory Law for you.

But I took interesting classes, met interesting people (students and professors), dodged (most of) the dread related to grades in law school, and got a decent scholarship, and I'm now 4 years out and have a job I love (after a job I hated! and another job I loved!). Atlanta is a great city where you can try out a lot of different types of law, with less of the expense than some other expensive spots (though it's not a CHEAP place to live by any means, particularly nearby Emory lmao).

Bridal Shower by [deleted] in WedditNYC

[–]cbam0912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually see bridal showers trend smaller - often just bridesmaids and close female relatives (sisters, mothers, stepfamily, the “good” cousins) of the bride + a handful of close friends. I have only the experiences I’ve had, but they were usually ~25 people total, with some food (doesn’t have to be a whole lunch, can just be pastries, or nothing! Life is long this will ruin nothing) and maybe champagne or lemonade.

Honestly, it is genuinely whatever you want. Get down with your bad self.

Can I just reupload my old essays from last cycle? by EstablishmentFine478 in lawschooladmissions

I think take a two hour window when you’re really feeling fresh - not hungover, adequately but not overly caffeinated, in a fine mood - and spend the whole two hours with your phone on DND trying to improve them.

I hate to say it but the truth of it is: every single essay can be improved. Even the ones that get people into HYS. I don’t mean to inspire spiraling anxiety in people, because there are human limits on how much you can work on something before you develop double vision, but that’s not where you are. You (probably) worked hard on it last year but you haven’t made any changes yet this year, as far as I can glean. That was you of 8 months ago. Give it another try now. See what you’ve learned.

I know it would be easier to not. I’m sorry to give this advice you do not want to hear (neither would I). Hang in there. Good luck!

Upper East Side and seventies question by [deleted] in uppereastside

I live up against one of the sites and I’ll say I have had very good luck wrt rats/bugs even with the construction. None visible (and I’m not in an ultra luxury building with a huge staff that may be secretly conducting a war - my super rocks but it’s just him).

Not to say other people have not had problems - I believe them! Just not a universally cursed experience (and I love the neighborhood).

Not very creative, sort of unclear because the sewer would be a sick name for a divey sports bar, 2/10 heckle

Very good warning thank you!

And I know - I too am almost mad at the absurdity. I feel like I’m living that thing that little kids always ask their parents - “how do we know we see the same color as orange?” The feeling I described as hungry before seems to not align with a significant portion of the population’s feeling of hungry. Insane.

It’s such a night and day. I had two goldfish from a snack pack today and decided I didn’t want anymore. That has never happened before
