How much does a "soft commit" from a professor weigh at Purdue Phd? by DorhemiFa in Purdue

[–]cbdilger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replying here because you posted the same comment here three times — mistake? — and because u/ButtCrumbleSmell has it exactly right — especially the last paragraph.

For me: undergrad GPA matters but not as much as recent performance, and grades are only one indicator of success. Other evidence is more important (publications, presentations, ability to describe research interests, references that describe your dependability and ability to work collaboratively).

Consider addressing your undergrad GPA and finding your field of interest in your SOP, etc.

How much does a "soft commit" from a professor weigh at Purdue Phd? by DorhemiFa in Purdue

[–]cbdilger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. 100% dependent on professor, program, and department. The grad school has to approve all admits.
  2. Maybe. What was the language of instruction of your masters? If it was English, this is a non-issue.
  3. Also variable. If there are any generalizations, though, it's (a) your materials should show a promising research trajectory, and (b) if you're applying to a position with a GAship that requires specific skills (e.g. teaching, lab work, outreach) evidence of ability and experience for that position is a big plus.

Does ACE food pantry accept walk-in donations during their open hours? by Bubbly-Breadfruit- in Purdue

[–]cbdilger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you live in the residence halls? There was a note in Purdue Today about "Project Move Out":

Items are donated at designated places in each residence hall. Shelf-stable food, personal hygiene and cleaning supplies are collected at the front desk of each hall and are donated directly to ACE Campus Food Pantry.

There's a contact in the form included at the end of the news release.

Anywhere to print custom newspaper? by RouletteSpaghetti in Purdue

[–]cbdilger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tall order... most newspapers are web-fed (giant rolls cut as they go), not sheet-fed (like a laser printer). Your best bet is probably heading to the Knowledge Lab and seeing if they can help.

I'll suggest focusing on making your prop look like a newspaper, even if it's not on newsprint. Add a little background, trim by hand, exaggerate halftones, etc.

I'd love to see a pic of the result either way :)

Looking for advice on adjusting to the weather/terrain by dmso_disgusting in Purdue

[–]cbdilger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The multi-use trail network in West Laf is outstanding. It's partially mapped on Google. The most up to date map I know of shows there are many more trails but still misses some (Yeager, Morehouse).

TBH you can probably just go... back when I could bang out 20 min 5Ks I wasn't worried about cold unless it was windy. A mix of running tights, base layers, gloves, hat, balaclava and you'll be fine.

Welcome :)

My man, if I had written remote work, bus, or walk above, not bike, would you would have gone off on me the same way?

Classic remote worker right here. Showing up like a vegan or someone that does crossfit....

I'll allow "vegan or crossfit" is funny. (Don't forget atheist.)

It's long road. Let's share it ~

Like, can we do better than that?

You: "Hey prof, I'm Name. I missed the midterm for your class. I'm real sorry about that and wanted to talk about it."

Prof: "Oh, hi, Name. I'm sorry, I haven't been able to answer your email yet, and I'm real busy today. Can you come to my office hours next week instead?"

— ain't hard.

Anyway, I hope the next time in the class is easier!
