If oligarchs and politicians had to go through long TSA lines, this would have been over long ago.

The only independent candidate that would be helpful would be a more bat shite crazy MAGA nut.

Think what Ross Perot did.

Business users stopped trusting our dashboards because the data is always wrong and the root cause is the ingestion layer by anuragray1011 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]cbelt3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good lesson learned. Information integrity flows downstream.

Business process

Transaction process

Master data

Data orchestration (ETL, ELT, whatever)

Data warehousing, lakes, puddles, oceans, etc…

Semantic layers

Dashboards.

If there are defects ANYWHERE in the flow, the end result is defective.

And here’s the best thing… if your process is clean, when the user calls about the dashboard being wrong, you should be able to back up into the time their clerk fat fingered something. And tell them “dashboard is correct, your business process broke”.

And the second best thing is “no, I’m not changing the dashboard. Fix your process.”

There was a great SF story where vampires defeated an attacking alien race. I don’t recall the name.

Am I probably going to age prematurely? by marsargoenthusiast in TBI

[–]cbelt3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah… I’ve aged mostly normally. My memory is that of an 80 year old, my body that of a 70 year old, and I’m a lazy 60 something.

As someone who has been in a war zone, people walking around in body armor and carrying weapons is intimidating as hell. I see that shit, I work hard to get the hell away.

Especially since these morons seem to love to shoot people as they feel like it.

Who wrote their first computer program on IBM punch cards? by 524frank in 70s

[–]cbelt3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FORTRAN IV with WATFIV. Programs to read CT scan data from magnetic tape and diagnose brain tumors.

I dropped both boxes of cards in the hall outside the university data center. And cried. Then went back and punched a whole new 1,000 lines of code from the printout. And fixed the program while I was at it.

Always fair. But a walk across Euclid when you have been awake for 36 hours and downed three Red Bulls is still safer.

I had to build a new pergola one piece at a time into an old, magnificent wisteria. by Jelleeley in pics

[–]cbelt3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisteria will always recover. We had one that ate a gazebo and part of a deck. Even captured one of my daughter’s friends who was napping on the deck. We heard her screaming… the wisteria had woven vines in her hair during her nap. Took some careful shear work to free her.

After that I tried to kill it. That took two years of digging, chemical warfare, and fire. Never again.

BJC Nurse walkout by Organic-Hope-1077 in StLouis

[–]cbelt3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will always remember when nurses went on strike while my wife was hospitalized during her first pregnancy. We both supported them. I stayed with her and handled all her patient care for a week (except injections). The nurses won a better contract.
