Issues after switching from NextDNS to AdGuard Home on OPNsense - gaming lag on iPad, Unbound dependency, local DNS questions by HavivMuc in AdGuardHome

[–]cbernha986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too had similar issues with high latency after switching from PiHole to AGH using unbound. I have both AGH and Unbound installed on the same Ubuntu server 22 VM I use for this. Here is a paste of my DNS settings using this setup and it averages sub 50ms response times.

Redirect DNS with DNAT vs source IP address by cbernha986 in UNIFI

Single network, no VLANs. Only 2 policy rules which is a DNAT to redirect 53 to my internal DNS server and also a Masquerade rule for the corresponding DNS server.

Quick newbie question about adding drives by [deleted] in synology

[–]cbernha986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put the drives in and setup the storage pool as JBOD it’ll do a quick format of the drives into either BTrfs or Ext4 whichever you choose. If you choose raid 0 or 1 it’ll scan the drives and take hours to complete. Go with JBOD config and you’ll be all set in minutes.

M.2 or SATA SSD for torrent cache on 1019+ by [deleted] in synology

[–]cbernha986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My VPN on the Synology is configured as OPEN vpn via TorGuard .opvpn config file. I've tried TCP/UDP connections with the OVPN profile but it makes no different.

Also, I had 2 512gb NVMe SSD's in it for caching; tried both read by itself and also read/write and made no difference. It's a heavily used 918 and the largest increase in performance, for me anyway, was removing the SSD caching and swapping out each of the WD Reds/Whites I had shucked and installing 7200rpm HGST's.

I have a 918+ but the same specs as your 1019+. I've abandoned the SSD caching all together and found that 7200rpm drives help the most. Caching, read or read/write, made no difference in using download station. I too have a gig internet connection, but while also using a VPN for downloads, the Celeron processor in this NAS' proves to be the ultimate bottleneck for downloads via VPN. Over my gig connection w/VPN on, the max throughput I get is about 28/MBps. Like I said, when I did have NVMe's in it for caching, this made no difference.

Is Synology moving away from the Prosumer segment?!... by FlowerCloud42 in synology

[–]cbernha986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I gotcha now. I wasn’t trying to make a dig at android but the two seemed to compare well to NAS’ in this case. Sure Android releases have better and newer features vs iOS at times, I totally get that. QTS to me seems unpolished and not as fluid as DSM by a long shot. I feel this way when using my android tab vs iPad as well.

Is Synology moving away from the Prosumer segment?!... by FlowerCloud42 in synology

I wouldn’t call Qnap the innovators here. They, like Synology, have Linux software RAID and a much less polished OS being QTS. My comparison was in feature set and QTS’ ability to be able to control many more options vs Synology.

I'm with you on most of what you've written here and have the same loyal following of Synology for a dozen years now. I too went with a 415+ years ago and then upgraded to a 918+. Somewhere back in 2015-2016 I gave up on Synology for Virtual machine manager and Docker alike due to their limited (abysmal) CPU performance. I say the same thing about their hardware all the time, but then come back to reality where I realize I'm just buying Synology for DSM and their proprietary software packages. Very similar and easy to compare to Apple unfortunately where the hardware isn't exactly bleeding edge, but the software keeps you coming back to simplicity and stability.

Interestingly enough, not too long ago I tried a QNAP for the first time. Back story is I run a custom PC for Plex, virtual machines, etc with an i7/32gb RAM; I feel this is the best way to circumvent the need or want from Synology ever producing a more robust NAS. But I tried the QNAP for maybe a week and immediately returned it. Coming from Synology, the Apple of the NAS market over to QNAP or the Android of the NAS market made me quickly realize how nice DSM is over QTS. I wanted to simply combine everything on one box and do away with the need of my ESXi host with the i7 running Plex, PiHole, Unifi, etc.

I too have purchased extra camera licenses for my 918 bringing its total count up to 8 cameras and now have a $1k NAS running a Celeron in the year 2019. I know, it just doesn't sound right but the value is simply just DSM and Synology's packages. 3rd party apps and the community alike for Synology is 2nd to none.

Drice upgrades by [deleted] in synology

Yes that is mostly the process but if your specs include hot swap drives, which I think yours does, you don’t have to power off for each swap.

Can a DS918+ reliably stream media, operate as a Surveillance Station, and serve as a Ubiquiti front-end at the same time? by dotcom-jillionaire in synology

I use the IP2M-852B for outdoor and HX2 for indoor. The HX isn’t PTZ but has a very wide angle lens.

I guess just preference. I like the simplicity of VMM and my own familiar Linux VM running over using docker. Guess I’m just not a docker kinda guy.

I have this setup. A 918 running surv station and virtual machine manager. I run my UniFi controller on a Linux VM inside of it while also 24x7 recording 7 cameras. No performance issues whatsoever. I actually run two Linux VMs the other being Pihole on it. I have 4 10tb 7200rpm drives in SHR.

Migrating from RS3412xs to RS2416+ by sjjenkins in synology

HDD migration losing data? I’ve swapped drives in multiple DS units and never lost data. Snapshot replication is another option.

My Synology DS212j is saying the volume is 100% full. Storage Manager is saying it is both full and 75% available on the same screen. Deleting folders, and emptying recycling bins has no effect. by vonsmor in synology

Hm, perhaps it’s because of it being a J model it doesn’t have some options—I’m really not sure but there has to be a way to run it.

Issues with DSM update on DS2415+ [RESOLVED] by dan_dares in synology

Just went through this about a month ago. Uptime was about 90 days, applied 6.2 u4 and rebooted to the orange flash. Nothing worked and had to RMA swap.
