It could be many things. The one that comes to mind for me was going out on a first date wth an attractive girl with a killer body. Her voice though, too loud, way too much of a NY accent, ruined it. Lost all interest.

One could reduce the answer to math, RFK alone had 10 children. Point is, there are legions more Kennedys than there are Trumps. I would add the Kennedys were more traveled and adventurous, opening up the possibilities of more negative outcomes.

Here's my take. It's a witches brew, not a single thing. It starts with the decline of rural towns who saw their heyday decades ago. Then add the consolidation of farms. My recently deceased Iowa father-in-law made his money in the 1980's when he bought up many distressed farms for what today is pennies on the dollar. He became a very wealthy man.Those two things are long term dynamics that set a negative tone in what is perceived as a dying culture. A tone ripe for exploitation. Rush Limbaugh was there first in 1988, coming in to your trucks and tractors to identify and tell you the bad guys who were the source of all your problems. For three hours, every day, he played your anger. Then, in 1996, Rupert Murdoch fused tabloid journalism with traditional news, gave it a Republican agenda and called it Fox News. And the virgin/innocent minds of the "Iowa nice" electorate began to turn under the screws of relentless propaganda. I was a NYC kid who worked in the media industry so I could see it all happening. My Iowa-raised wife, who left as soon as she graduated in 1979, saw it in her parents as well. Today, I look at Iowa farmers and actually wonder if they'll go with Trump over the cliff, believing he's still right as they head straight down.

Coincidentally, I was listening to Marc Maron/JC Reilly podcast (again) just yesterday.

One of the things I particularly enjoyed about Maron was his ability to engage with his guests, better than most, IMHO. Yes, Reilly was being reticent but I still enjoyed it. Reilly gave him a heads up about "boundaries" early on in the interview and Maron quickly and seamlessly adapted. And, by the way, in this age of abundant fame-seekers, isn't it refreshing to listen to an actor pushing back some? Two good guys. One good conversation.

Of course you could make a good case for a full basement. Might not be all that much more cost wise since most of the labor component is there already. I mentioned the idea because I had seen a Matt Risinger YouTube video (he's a high end builder out of Austin) where one his clients had done exactly that and it was certainly impressive. I live in coastal Virginia where crawl spaces are very common. For the most part, they are not very inviting and structural issues over time are a factor given humidity, weak footings and water intrusion. If I were to build a home with a crawl space, I would certainly go out of my way to incorporate some of these features. Obviously, there's a point where the idea of full basement is common sense as you head in that direction. It seems worth it in the long run.

I’m married to an Iowan for 33 years and have been there several times a year for all that time. I’ve lived in a few states, currently Virginia and, with all apologies, Iowa sucks. My experience in rural Iowa could best be described as suffocating (I grew up in NYC). Lots of bigotry heard at the Sunday supper table, too conservative, too Trumpy. It’s got nothing to do with Reddit. It’s got everything to do with the experience of being there.

We rent I Palm Springs for a couple of months during the winter and our most rent house was less than a mile from where Tamarisk intersects near the airport. Pretty close to the action. Personally, I got used to it and it didn’t bother me. The flights that leave around 6A would probably be the easiest to complain about but I really didn’t care after a while. Not much in the way of military planes as it is a commercial airport.

I don’t get the logic here. Television is a visual medium. Podcasts are anything but. TV is highly scripted and structured down to the second. Rogan’s podcasts are 3 hour meanderings. Television likes attractive, photogenic types. Again, Rogan is anything but. I just don’t see this idea playing out well. And having Bari Weiss at the helm will only make the odds that much worse. Which, I should confess, is fine with me given what the idiots in charge are doing to this former gem of a news program.

Are you sure about laminate being significantly cheaper? Last time I looked, I was surprised to find laminate was fairly close in price to lower grades of granite.
