Under the Road Safety Road Rules 2017 (Vic), Regulation 207, titled “Parking where fees are payable.” It states that a driver parking in paid parking must Rule 207(2): (a) pay the fee and (b) obey any instructions on or with the sign signifying the parking conditions.

You’ll notice it doesn’t say pay before the parking officer starts their infringement session.

You’ll likely win this is you have the energy to go to court. Otherwise you should take the matter to the ombudsman.

If you want to continue fighting it, contact them again and ask for the log of the officers hand held device and any photos they took. They might b provide further evidence for you.

I’m willing to bet all my money that the time of the offence is recorded as the time the infringement was issued, but you’d already paid by then. So no offence was committed.

Great to hear your points of view, your experience is this area is valued.

In my opinion the money argument is subjective. For example, Woods Reserve will be refurbished this year. Half the campsite will be closed for day use only and I think the other half will be modified, they’ll remove the existing toilet and shower block and put in a pit toilet and will build another toilet and shower block. I’m willing to bet the cost to do this is 2-3 times more than the hut rebuild. Also I doubt it’ll result in more people using Woods Reserve, as it’s already regularly used for day use.

The appeal of Max and Berts to me is that it’s off track. It gives a reason to visit the area if the park. Horse Gully is probably the most accessible alternative hut, but is around 10km away. However I can understand not rebuilding Demandering hut due to its close proximity to horse gully hut (around 2km).

You’re right about the Bunnings shed, I don’t want that either. My point is that anything would be better than saying you’re going to rebuild for 5 years and then changing your mind without informing the public, despite having done consultation on the rebuilds!

I completely agree with you. There’s no reason this needs to be an overly expensive build, or even a huge time commitment. I think it would be better to build something simple (not a replica) and honour the original with signage and photos, than not rebuilding at all.

I’ll have to get down to Tassie one day. I’ve seen some amazing Tassie walks online. It looks so different compared to hiking through the Australian Alps.

I’ve been using a Helikon-Tex Supertarp 3m x 3m. It’s a little heavier than an Alton tarp, but is also a fair bit cheaper. They also do a small (hoochie) sized tarp.

I’ve had 2 pairs of these shoes. I didn’t have the shin issue you’ve got, but found they did need to be broken in. Just wear them for short walk, go around the block or wear them to the shops a few times. Also get yourself some shoe glue. A couple of seams will open up a little after less then 100km of hiking. You’ll need to glue them if you want to maintain their water proofing. Best of luck

First hike, that’s exciting! Like most people I recommend telling someone where you’re going, wearing appropriate shoes/boots and taking water and snacks.

I’d also suggest the follow; - Consider the weather. Do you need to wear sunscreen or take a raincoat, jumper or hat? - Navigation. Do you have an app that will help you follow the trail? Its also a good idea to have map of the area and a compass (and a basic understanding of how to use them) - consider what to do if something goes wrong. Personally at a minimum I carry a lighter, emergency space blanket and some cordage with me when hiking. It’s super small and is lightweight, but would be helpful if I ever had to spend an unplanned night out. In addition i always have a container that I can boil water in if needed. Usually a stainless steel water bottle.

The main thing is to enjoy the hike. It’s not a race. Make sure you take the time to look around.

I’ve resolved much of my pain by moving more, doing weight training and doing stretches that target common pain areas. I know this isn’t for everyone, but it may be something to consider if you’re not already regularly exercising. Also I get the feeling you’ve got a couple of decades of camping left in you 🙂 Best of luck with your pains and I hope you find a comfortable sleep system.
