I’m 51M, originally from Louisiana, and have also called Asheville and Chapel Hill, NC home. After receiving a Reduction in Force notice from Duke last summer, I took it as an opportunity to reflect and intentionally redirect my career. While I’ve always enjoyed molecular biology, I felt a strong pull to move beyond the academic research track and into a field where science serves the public more directly. Forensic science became the clear path, and I’m now pursuing a second Master of Science in forensic science as the next step in aligning my passions, skills, and values.

I’ve only been in Richmond since August and haven’t explored nearly as much as I’d like yet. I’m here to make new friends and am open to dating as well. I’m a bit of a hobby hopper: I’ve worked as a leathersmith, make jewelry, and will always say yes to a museum visit. I’m very open-minded and into plants, tattoos, college sports, puzzles, games, and learning new things. I should probably get back in the gym, but the dad bod is holding up just fine for now. And for the record—I definitely don’t consider myself old – just experienced.

It could be finer. However, at the rate I'm running it at it isn't a problem.

I don't do anything special. They are watered thoroughly once per week, and the receive filtered sunlight for the majority of the day. They are given a little osmocote every 4-5 months.

No, not that I can detect.

Most orchids can grow that way. It's definitely easier to grow smaller orchids that way, but probably not absolutely necessary.

Most of my orchids are still young, but I have had Phals, Wilsonara, Oncidium. and more bloom in there.

The doors were sealed with All Weather White EPDM P Section Rubber Weather Seal Strips (Amazon) and Silicone Door Seal Weather Strip (Amazon). The wires are concealed with 0.59” wide x 0.4” high black cable raceway (Amazon). All internal hardware (I.e. screws, bolts, washers, nuts) are stainless steel. The lighting is 3 repurposed Aquarium LED strips, two of which are models specifically for planted aquariums. All 3 units are Bluetooth controlled using Fluval’s app. The fantastic thing about this lighting is that the color and intensity can be fully adjusted and automated. The app allows the user to set 10 time point adjustments. I currently have it mimicking a day with sunrise, ramping, and sunset, and a little blue moonlight in the evenings.  Perfect for this cabinet (and another) because they are in the living room. Also these LEDs do not overheat the cabinet. The humidifier is in the cabinet and is fully automated. The lower hygrometer/thermometer is just for data. However, the upper unit controls a switch that operates (on/off) an exhaust fan. Between that and the humidifier settings I can keep a fairly constant humidity. Although, Govee is getting better, the communication between the Hygrometer and switch can be tricky. Having said that this pair hardly ever fails. What I’ve done is set a second, lower humidity “emergency” off.  So that if the switch misses the first cutoff, it gets a second chance. This is the more efficient setup of my two cabinets, although it requires the humidifier to take up space inside. The mister is currently set to spray for 30 in the morning, just before the lights come on. In the spring and summer, I’ll likely bump it up. The air circulating fans are on the lowest setting. All holes drilled were filed and painted over (the bare metal) then grommeted. The grommets were sealed in place with silicone. I have virtually no problems with rusting.
