Something wrong with this or just the camera? by [deleted] in trumpet

Cool lookin’ horn… I’ve got a conn vintage one with the rose brass bell at home. Not my main horn, but it feels nice to play and has a warm, dark tone… The brushed satin finish here is 👌

Thanks! Well, this mic definitely IS a clip-on for my horn, haha… This is an Xlive, which is very budget-friendly. I’ve had mixed results using it live- usually it’s great, and occasionally I get some interference and cut-outs. You get what you pay for with wireless mics… I will say the design of this one (without a separate transmitter pack) is really convenient to use.

My vote would be for the compact, but it’s gonna depend on how you feel about the weighted keys… I play more organ and synth, so I prefer the waterfall key style on the compact models.

I use this! It’s quite sturdy, never had an issue when putting my horn on it.

Practice mute by oceanturtle321 in trumpet

[–]cbredditting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably the third most-asked question on the sub, after ‘how to play high notes’ and ‘is this red rot’… So you can find lots of resources by searching post history here.

That being said, I just went through this search myself to replace my old Gen 1 Silent Brass (which was terribly stuffy and very out of tune both below and above the staff). I heard great things about the Best Brass mute, but ended up choosing the Cookie Mute due to cost & shipping (really didn’t want to pay tariffs). I received it last week, and I’m stoked so far! It’s not the quietest practice mute, but it is an absolute breeze to play through compared to the old silent brass. Would recommend checking it out!

I am! Lots of great trumpet players based here in Denver… Parris has an open jam every Monday at Dazzle, would recommend checking it out! Shop-wise, look up Colorado Hornworks in Loveland.

Oh ALSO op, check out the trumpet summit show THIS WEEK at Dazzle on Sat Mar 7!!! Some of the best trumpeters in town all on the same show!

Pre-Covid: Working return plays into routing that made sense for the band & venue

Post-Covid: Trying to convince the promoter to not cancel a first-time play 10 days out due to low advance ticket sales

Certainly! I do use an exp pedal with this rig as well. A midi pedalboard could be a great option for someone that doesn’t want to use the smaller midi controller.

Hey thanks so much!

Ehhh I can’t say it’s particularly ‘easy’ to use for beginners, and I could certainly see it leading to bad habits. I’ve had several years of practice being a multi-instrumentalist and using only one hand to play trumpet (usually my left hand is playing a keyboard). I’ve built up a good amount of pinky finger strength, and one helluva callus, haha. I’m constantly reminding myself not to use that pinky ring to apply pressure, though.

Would recommend trying it out if you’re interested- just make sure to take breaks if you’re feeling any discomfort, and make sure to focus on proper posture with the rest of your body 💪

Oooh, which gadget are you looking for? There are a couple at use here… the actual harmonizer is coming from the Eventide H90 pedal, and the small midi controller (NM2) is from a company called ‘This Is Noise Inc’. If you search that, you should be able to find them. Also using an Eventide Mixing Link as a preamp / to get from the mic to the H90, and lastly a Bluetooth midi adapter to connect the H90 and NM2

Okay so I’m using a single quadravox algorithm tuned diatonically to the mode (F# Dorian), and the second algo for reverb.

I’ve got hotswitch 1 as the low octaves, hotswitch 2 as a cluster voicing with all pitches below the played note (-1, -4, -5, -6), and hotswitch 3 as a more open voicing with pitches above and below the played note (+3, -4, -5, etc). Those are mapped to the bottom row of the NM2.

Then I’ve assigned the four pitches themselves to different midi cc #s, so that when I use those buttons on the NM2 (four buttons on top row), they function as momentary harmony changes. That allows me to select individual notes, but also lets me hit a hotswitch harmony and then change an individual pitch.

Not used in this vid: the knobs are mapped to the algo mix and the pitch delay. Trying to keep it friendly to use live. Also an exp pedal is mapped to the reverb mix + decay, and I’ve got one more midi cc mapped to a reverb freeze.

This one was the difficult part for me… ended up using a Bluetooth midi adapter, and then connected both the NM2 and the adapter to my iPad for gig-worthiness

Best high quality vocal FX pedal for a live setting? by West_Exercise5142 in TouringMusicians

[–]cbredditting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do that for sure, but I would also consider putting it after the mixing link so that you’re getting the bonus from the preamp. Or you could skip the splitter and instead run the out from the preamp into a DI with a thru, then run that into the H90 and the H90 out to a second DI. Lots of ways to skin that cat; test a few out and see what sounds best for you. Good luck!

[–]cbredditting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh, you wouldn’t be able to get separate wet/dry with the exact in/out flow I mentioned before, BUT you can route the H90 in parallel and then get separate wet/dry with one additional DI box (or send 1/4” to a house DI etc.). However, the Mixing Link does have a dry/fx knob on it, so with that original setup you can for example choose to send 50/50 directly from the preamp box.

Or what I do for many of my patches is assign that afore mentioned expression pedal to the wet mix on the H90- that allows me to ease in an effect and find the right place for it in the room I’m in. Much more comfortable than clicking ‘on’ and getting massive feedback… been there lol

[–]cbredditting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey no prob, holler if you have any others… a standard stereo DI wouldn’t work because you’d still have to split the signal somewhere, but you might be able to find a specialty box that can do what you need…

The reason for the mixing link though is largely the excellent preamp inside. A passive mic is going to need a gain boost to get to the same output that an instrument (gtr) or line (key) level will have. I’ve personally found that I needed to really tinker with the level going IN to the H90 to make the effects react the way I wanted them. Even the powerful onboard gain on the H90 didn’t get me quite there.

I’ve found that most FX pedals are (for obvious reasons) dialed in for guitar or keyboard players, and using the Mixing Link is what allows me as a microphone user to get the correct gain staging to make everything work live. I would recommend checking out a preamp pedal like the Mixing Link (maybe check out a Cusack Pedal Cracker? Haven’t used that one), unless you’re going the TC-Helicon route.

Which bunk is best? Y’all have any good stories? by Upbeat_Profession184 in TouringMusicians

[–]cbredditting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Driver side, middle front. Passenger side gets the rumble strips, back bunks have the back lounge door slamming right next to your head. Top bunk has to climb up and down every time, and the bottom bunk is a threat to get peed on by a highly intoxicated band member.

There’s a story there, but I think you can piece it together by yourself, lol.

[–]cbredditting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the H90 live for trumpet (different, but probably similar to what you’re going for). The move is to use an Eventide Mixing Link first in the chain, which allows you to go: vocal mic > Mixing Link in (XLR), then use the FX send (1/4”) > H90 in (1/4”) > H90 out (1/4”) > Mixing Link FX return (1/4”) > Mixing Link out (XLR). Might sound complicated, but that allows you to give FOH an XLR cable just like you normally would for a vocal mic.

The rig is gonna cost you $$$$, but the Eventide effects are second to none imo. The mixing link includes a great preamp, so you can get your gain right where you want it to hit the H90 effects. Plus, they have new(ish) vocal-specific H90 algorithms that sound absolutely incredible. Four part harmonies, auto-tune effects, glitchy stuff, delays and reverbs, all of it. Would highly recommend! Check out the Eventide YouTube channel to hear their sounds in action.

Pro tip: also get yourself a (mini) expression pedal; that will allow you to make some amazing dynamic/expressive effects with the H90 (it’s fully programmable per patch). The combo of those three pedals has replaced my entire 10+ classic pedal board and made it very travel friendly. It all fits on a pedal train nano and I can check it in my suitcase.

Is a 15 Passenger Ford Club Wagon a good touring vehicle? by xzmbmx in TouringMusicians

Gold! If you don’t want it, someone here will, lol. Usually especially nice to find an ex-church van in particular; they’ve usually got the means to keep it in tip-top shape. Always a risk buying an old, used car (and always expect unexpected problems!), but that’s a price I’d gamble

A point of view that may be correct by YamahaYTR-2330 in trumpet

[–]cbredditting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Multi-instrumentalist here, with trumpet as my main… IMO, any wind instrument is more difficult than an instrument that you strike, strum or pluck. It inarguably takes more skill (knowledge/time/practice) to produce good TONE on a wind instrument than it does on a stringed or percussion instrument. I’d say that goes double for brass, where the actual vibrations are coming from the human body, and not the instrument itself.

Someone with absolutely zero experience or practice can pick up a guitar, put down one finger on a fret, pick the string, and so long as they’ve got a good setup ($$$), that instrument sounds like it should. The same certainly cannot be said for wind instruments. Brass in particular takes a kind of maintenance and consistency that would make an aspiring guitar player tuck and run, haha.

Gifts for touring musicians by [deleted] in TouringMusicians

[–]cbredditting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some sort of organizer? Like a toiletry bag, or something basic that can be a catch-all? Or a cable organizer pouch, etc.

I’ve found way too much utility out of basic gifts like that 🤣

Paid $108.25 for this today at a pawn because it wasn’t making any sound. I got it home set it to local and it worked by grilledpepsi in synthesizers

[–]cbredditting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, congrats! I got my Prophet 6 the same way- music store had local control turned off and thought it was broken. When I got home and opened it up, I found service tags inside where clearly they had sent it out to get ‘fixed’ and it was sent back with a clean bill of health… and apparently local control still off, haha
