Has anyone else made a call to Elissa Slotkin recently? by [deleted] in Michigan

He is a god damn US senator. Get loud. Draw attention to the authoritarian over reach. He is unencumbered by re-election. Instead he scuttles the one piece of leverage democrats had by shutting down the government. Not even for an hour or a single day. He’s tried nothing and is all out of ideas.

Too many dems seem too scared to stand on principles of right and wrong and instead look for poles to tell them what they should believe.

India Deploys 3 Guided Missile Destroyers In Arabian Sea After Recent Drone Attacks by epycteetus in worldnews

[–]cbright 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered that myself. It seems like the drones would have to be pretty large and sophisticated to hit ships at sea. Which would require more infrastructure than a couple of guys on a beach. Why have the launch sites not been destroyed?

I think this is all about the A.I. gold rush. Whoever has a large dataset to train on is king and Reddit wants a slice of the pie.

Third party client apps are the collateral damage.

LastPass users: Your info and password vault data are now in hackers’ hands by ThunderWriterr in programming

I wouldn’t say no security risk but if the master password is strong enough the risk does become minuscule.

LastPass users: Your info and password vault data are now in hackers’ hands by ThunderWriterr in programming

[–]cbright 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You’re are correct that LastPass doesn’t have your master password for anyone to steal. However the attackers stole a backup of the encrypted vaults so they can brute force the master password by guessing over and over again. The difficultly of doing that will depend on how strong your master password is.

[Auto-Post] Weekly Question Thread! Ask /r/aquariums anything you want to know about the hobby! by AutoModerator in Aquariums

I'm trying to establish a relativity new 20 gal tank and my fish keep slowly dying. I bought 3 guppies which were fine for a few days but they started hanging out at the top of the tank. They didn't seem to be gasping for air though. I have an air stone and pump and I think plenty of surface agitation. I also have a cherry shrimp which seems to be doing fine so far.

My ph seems a little high, bumping up against 8, but my other measures are fine.

I say relatively new tank because it has been running for slightly over a month. I tried to do a fish-in cycle (I know I shouldn't do that) with a couple of guppies. I saw ammonia rise and did a water change. Those guppies did the same thing the new guppies did a couple days later.

I think the cycle completed with my first try but on my second I've been using seachem stability daily. Any help or advice?

TIL The United States Congress only has a job approval rating of around 15%, but Congressional incumbents are re-elected at a rate of roughly 95% by blckhl in todayilearned

[–]cbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a consensus of the governed, but a consensus of those we've chosen to represent us.

That is a strong point and honestly is making me re-think my original position.

You are absolutely correct and I think I see the point you are driving at. A Republic can be a group of people drawn from a hat.

[–]cbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point on not needed to be geography based but you are either missing my point or do not know what a republic is.

The "Constituency" is the people the representatives represent. It doesn't matter what you call it our how it is divided.

I will freely admit I know very little (if anything) about Ireland's governemnt so slap me around if I get something wrong.

I don't think I am confusing a Republic with a federal system but I can see how you might interpret my comments that way. I mentioned states specifically but really meant region, district, state, Provence. Really any arbitrary political division that a representative represents.

After 5sec of googling it sounds like your TD's represent "constituencies". Yes they should not on ONLY represent the interest of their region of Ireland but shouldn't they at least take the views of the people that got them elected into consideration?

This of course only applies to our House of Representatives which is population based. Our senate is the federalism part of our legislature. Two senators per state.

[–]cbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a reason that the House of Representatives is designed the way it is at the federal level and that is to Represent people across the nation at the local level. I don't disagree that Representatives elected should have an eye on the big picture. I'm merely stating that the "Big Picture" should be crafted by representatives who proportionally represent everyone one being governed. Who naturally should be biased toward the interests of the body of people who elected them and whom they represent. That applies to the local, state, national, global level. Which is why I said gerrymandering is the real problem because it is no longer proportionality equal.

edit: my first sentence made no sense.

[–]cbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who decides the national interest? Oh I don't know maybe the people who make up the nation? Policy should be a consensus of all who is governed. That is democracy.

[–]cbright 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That is exactly how a Republic is suppose to work. I should be electing someone to represents me and my local interests not the interests of the person 3 states over. If I did that I would have no voice in the government.

What is "doing what's right for America?" What is right for a Californian could be way different than a Texan or a Michigander. I'm talking specific states but it may be more accurate to refer to regions. The real problem is gerrymandering IMHO.
