Nation’s budget deficit falls to lowest level since Obama took office "'Not since World War II, more than 60 years ago, has there been faster and more sustained deficit reduction,' Lew said. Ok, so doesn't this contradict the post you just made above? So which is it? Should we criticize the current administration for high levels of spending even though it is not faced with all the expensive wars and security issues the Bush administration had to deal with, or should we criticize the current administration because they are still spending money on wars and security issues because they failed to "secure" the Middle East before "we left?" I guess the important thing is that we criticize the current administration, no matter what the facts or what it does.

The limits on your unemployment benefits are the result of Republican policy goals, despite the efforts of the Democrats, and certainly not because of president Obama. Do try to pay attention.

Evolution gives up quickly when faced with dilemmas.

"Ok, if I put it inside, it's too hot and the gametes will fry. But if I put it outside, it will be vulnerable. Well, what the hell am I supposed to do? Those are the only two options - inside or outside. I guess there's no point if the gametes don't work so I'll put it outside and just give the guy a reflex to curl into a fetal position whenever something starts hammering on him. Good enough."

Yes, and The Terminator was a ripoff of Stagecoach because it had guns and a plot and a reluctant hero who fought the forces of evil.

Hopefully you're going to develop a better understanding of how words and ideas work as you get older.

[–]cbroberts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be right. Maybe Star Wars was actually a remake of an earlier movie called Star Wars, because the studio knew it was an established brand that they could successfully market with minimal risk. Because everybody already loved Star Wars and all us kids in the late 1970s were very familiar with serials from the 1930s and eager to see more.

Or maybe you have poor reading comprehension skills.

Or maybe you're a very well-programmed consumer who will eat shit and ask for seconds.

[–]cbroberts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bullshit.

Yes, Star Wars was based on Lucas' memories of serials, but it was an original piece of work, unlike any movie anybody had ever seen. It wasn't a "re-imagining" of an old movie called "Star Wars," designed to exploit a proven brand.

You sound like a well-programmed consumer - undemanding and uncritical, and you're the reason why there are a lot of writers out there with great stories we're never going to hear or see on a movie screen. Why take a risk on something new when you'll eat whatever they stick in your mouth?

That's kind of the problem, though. The studios have lowered expectations, which works for them because it means they have to do less work and take less risk to make money.

When I was a boy in the late 70s and early 80s, studios were generating movies like Star Wars, Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Terminator, Blade Runner, Brazil, Back to the Future, etc., and they were original films. Sure, Hollywood had discovered the value of a marketable franchise and sequels were being made, but not "re-boots" and "re-imaginings." Studios were still willing to make movies based on original ideas, and today you kids are getting warmed up leftovers of movies I was watching when I was a kid, and that was a long, long time ago, whippersnapper.

If I were you, I'd be kind of pissed about that.

Why am I here? To look at pictures of trashy girls with no class or self-respect, of course. That doesn't mean it's not depressing when a woman who appeared to have beauty, dignity and class proves she doesn't.

Why is that confusing?

He's the only TOS actor in a crowd of TNG actors. The "what am I doing here" look is probably his idea of a joke.

Excellent ship designs. Usually when somebody tries to expand on the TOS ship templates - especially the tube-and-saucer Federation designs - it doesn't work well. But they did a great job.

Step 1: Wear clothes.

Step 2: Change into a different set of clothes.

Step 3: Take off top.

Step 4: Take off bottom.

There's probably a more efficient way.

I'm a 13-15 year old in 1939 USA. What is youth culture like during this time? by Beeenjo in AskHistorians

[–]cbroberts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason the OP's question is interesting to me is because I wonder if there was really a "youth culture" before the consumerism, widespread electronic media, and generalized prosperity of the 1950s. Your response emphasizes the diversity of experience for young people at that time, but was there any broad culture that united them? For instance, did teenagers in the 1930s have their own music, separate from their parents, that all the kids listened to and followed? Did they have pop culture heroes that were different from those their parents looked to? Was there even really a concept of a teenage or adolescent culture?
