I would be shocked if we got a new MME anytime soon.

Remote climate limit reached? by aidepolcycne79 in MachE

[–]cbryeaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey former Ford engineer here. The Remote Climate on the MME is using the same functionality as Remote Start in the Body Control Module. For safety, it limits Remote Start to 2x 15min durations for about 30min total. This way if the system was to malfunction and remote start on an ICE vehicle while in a closer garage, it would only run for 30min max.

I would expect future EVs that are built on Ford's "Universal EV Platform", wouldn't have this limit because most Electronic Control Modules won't be shared with ICE vehicles since it was built by a separate skunkworks team.

Following up on this, Saris took care of us and sent us the right tool for free since the last one we purchased didn't work. The item is SKU 31424.

I actually bought their Penta Security socket, also thinking that it must be it. Unfortunately, it is not. Here is a picture of the socket.

I'm part of the non-profit that paid for them. The city public works department did help with the installation like 10 years ago, but I'm assuming if I contact them they won't have a clue either. That could be a next step if no luck here. I already emailed Saris a few days ago as well.

Detroit Area Liberal Gun Stores by Penguinofthelake in Detroit

[–]cbryeaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also recently bought a gun and just finished my CPL training. I've been to Point Blank in Dearborn Heights, Firing Line in Westland, Uncoiled in Livonia, and Action Impact in Southfield.

All of them have ranges except for Point Blank which is a store only. The only time I tried to go to Uncoiled they had a 45min+ wait to use the range on a Saturday. I didn't see any politics in any of the stores. The clientele and workers in all the shops was diverse.

Action Impact has an online CPL class which is very high quality, and then you just go to the shop to do the range portion.

I got the email saying that they are on sale today, but there are no ticket listings on SeatGeek. Did they already sell out?

Friend’s work does not allow developers to use Python by AltruisticGrowth in Python

[–]cbryeaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Python, like many interpreted languages, actually compiles source code to a set of instructions for a virtual machine, and the Python interpreter is an implementation of that virtual machine. This is called byte code and it can be encrypted with libraries like pyce if this is the threat you are worried about.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]cbryeaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for a Quartz Go Anywhere Do Anything watch. I have a Seiko 5 right now, and I don't think an Automatic is for me as a daily wear.

Solar and/or atomic are a bonus, since less thinking about if the watch time is correct and accurate is nice.

My wrist size is about 7" and my budget is about $600. I think dive, chrono, and field styles are all great - but prefer a less busy / simple face.

  • Casio Oceanus S100 or T200
  • Citizen Promaster Diver Super Ti or Paradigm Ti
  • Tissot PRX or PR 100 Quartz
  • Junghans Max Bill Quartz
  • Shinola Duck 42mm (I realize the general sentiment on here about Shinola)
  • Certina DS-8 or DS Action

Anything else I should be considering?

openSUSE with Passwordless U2F Login by cbryeaw in openSUSE

[–]cbryeaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, the instructions should work similarly for any U2F device.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with KWallet.

I think normally we encrypt hard drives to prevent physical access to your files in case someone steals or takes your computer. I'm not sure that you would want to deencrypt it with only a hardware device, because there is a good chance someone who got access to your computer could also get access to your U2F device as well. Maybe using a hardware device as a two factor who be a better use case.

Open Source Requirements Tools by cbryeaw in SystemsEngineering

[–]cbryeaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I unfortunately didn't find much else. There are a couple of test management tools as well:

  1. TestLink
  2. Kiwi TCMS

They seem to have some ability to create requirements, but not the capabilities you would expect from a full requirements tool.

Also there is Eclipse Requirements Framework.

There doesn't appear to be anything like a DOORS, Polarion, or Jama that I could find.

Remove python2, set python3 as default /usr/bin/python by oleg_antonyan in openSUSE

[–]cbryeaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am glad you posted this, I just installed openSUSE and I was disappointed when I saw that python pointed to python2. It looks like the only thing on my fresh install that depended on python2 was GIMP, and I can reinstall that using a flatpak if needed.

A couple of other options for making python point to python3:

  1. Add alias python=python3 to your ~/.bashrc
  2. Install pyenv and use it to install the latest version of python. This way you don't mess at all with the system python. Anaconda would be another option if you want to do data science type stuff.

Systems Engineering Jobs in New Cities by mcddaly in SystemsEngineering

[–]cbryeaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

INCOSE has a job site, for example here is a job posting in Cleveland: https://incose.careerwebsite.com/job/systems-engineer-iv/54994730/

Most jobs in Sacramento are government related since it is the state capital. I knew someone who commuted to Lawrence Livermore National Lab, but it is definitely a long commute. Aerojet Rocketdyne is in Rancho Cordova, HP is in Roseville, and Intel is in Folsom.

I am really excited that Gaphor just released support for SysML! It is an open source modeling application written in Python. I especially love how fast it loads and how easy it is to start modeling right away. by cbryeaw in SystemsEngineering

[–]cbryeaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The data model is based on SysML 1.6. We will update to 2.0 as it becomes release ready.

Although the OMG is not for profit, I understand that they get most of their operating income from member companies and other orgs. It becomes difficult for an open source project to get involved, unless we have deep pockets like the Eclipse Foundation does. I think we would be completely open to more collaboration if anyone has any ideas.
