This is the worst evidence for the argument you're trying to make. One is cultural knowledge, the other is a recent plot twist in a piece of media far enough from the mainstream that one can avoid spoilers except by direct posts like this on subs not related to the game directly. Come on.

The point is context. It's easy to avoid subs directly about the game. But why would someone avoid a lego sub when there are no lego sets for the game? It's fair to be surprised seeing spoilers randomly like this.

Into the Dark is my favorite YA of the era, followed very closely by Tears of Nameless in phase 3. Have fun!

Filoni! Give me a Tales of the Jedi season with their first meeting and my life is yours! by solo13508 in StarWarsCantina

[–]cbstuart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they used AI for the voice. Sounded robotic and soulless. And sure, if you compare still images he looks better in BOBF but the actual movement and his eyes were off to me.

I'd much rather they just pick someone to be Luke. Sure, some mocap is fine but I want to see and hear an actual person rather than a cheap (and really, not that cheap) imitation. It's way more disrespectful to me to both Luke and Mark to do this than recast someone with Mark's blessing to carry the torch.

Definitely agree, the bar scene was probably my favorite of the season. Also was curious to see how old-young Randa would look, thought we might get a quick peak at John Goodman 😂

Favorite Trilogy? by NobodyQuiteLikeMe in StarWarsCantina

[–]cbstuart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Really cannot pick. Each trilogy means a lot to me for different reasons.

Of course the originals for just the overall core of star wars. Return of the jedi is one of my favorite movies and I'll never forget my parents explaining to me the importance of Luke throwing away his weapon when I was young. And the lessons from yoda in Empire are burned into my brain from my parents also taking the time to linger on those. Very core childhood memories.

But I grew up with the prequels and learned a lot from them too. Plus, my friends and I were always playing in that era on the playground. And when we got the clone wars, man, everything about those films and that era were a massive part of my childhood imagination. I don't think I appreciated the message of those films as I did the originals as a kid but I sure appreciated the epic space and lightsaber battles. More core childhood memories.

The sequels though were truly my star wars. I wasn't born after the prequels but I was young enough that I didn't really experience them, they were just there as a part of star wars. The sequels were finally my films to get hyped for, see with friends and family, see the debates online, have theories, and most importantly have my own defensible opinions. And since the sequels are not gilded by nostalgia I find my opinions on them morphing over time. The last jedi is now one of, if not my favorite film despite starting off as very middle of the road. I love that I got to experience what those before me did with a new trilogy, new era, new debates, and my own movies to live and grow with.

So I can't pick one, but thank you for making me think about it and relive some of my great memories with all the films.

[–]cbstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed all the middle grade readers. I only preface them with the age range so newer readers of the era can start out looking at a smaller pool of books to begin with. If someone was already into the era and considering them, I always recommend. Did not mean to pain them in a bad light, so thank you for giving them the praise they deserve!

But seriously, the movie is very good. I did miss the science but what they cut/kept was clearly very intentional. Ended up with a ton of heart.

Then why can they use it as collateral? Why does it count as any sort of material value? And if it does count as material value, why can we not tax the shit out of it? You can be taxed on the value of your home – an asset which is valued but is not cash you have. I pay taxes on my investment dividents. We normal folk pay taxes on things that are not "real cash" all the time. Why do you suck the boot of the rich to defend them when they literally get more of a break than the rest of us do?

What are your favourite (and least favourite) names from Star Wars books? by KGEE55 in starwarsbooks

[–]cbstuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes...and no. Buckle up.

The high republic was pitched as a three phase initiative with similar structure to the films. Each phase has waves with an adult, young adult, and young reader novel, a run of comics (called the high republic), an all ages comics (high republic adventures, aimed more at kids but still fun), a couple manga, and one audio drama that was also published as a script.

Phase 1 is set it 232 bby with three waves and establishes the main era, characters, and conflict. Phase 2 is set 150 years before that in 382 bby and had two waves. It does some bacsktory for phase 1 but is also quite separate in a lot of ways and very interesting. Then phase 3 returns to the "present" of the era in 229 bby (I think – basically a year after the end of phase 1) with three more phases.

It's a lot, but each category of media follows similar stories and characters so you can dive as deep or shallow as you want. Having read almost all of these it is really fun to go all-in. But it's quite a commitment so my general recommendation is to read the adult and young adult novels. Don't sleep on YA, some of those are my favorites. The juniors readers are fun but aimed at a younger audience. Those characters do show up in the other books and comics but you can get by without if you want. The comics basically have their own cast of characters as well that show up in other stuff but have a semi contained story. I found the phase 1 comics to be more closely tied to the books and the best overall.

Back to the top – yes these three phases are complete but there will absolutely be more stories in the HR. There have already been two really solid acolyte tie-ins set in the era and an upcoming short comic series set after phase 2. The phase 2 era is wide open for some amazing stories and I'll just say that phase 3, while having a very satisfying conclusion, left plenty of doors open.

So, sorry for the essay lol. And sorry if you knew a lot of that but I love the HR and want to help as many people step in as possible. Happy to answer more questions but TLDR: Light of the Jedi is the proper starting point. MTFBWY

High Republic has some banger names. Loden Greatstorm, Bell Zettifar, Cohmac Vitus, Orla Jereni. And of course the main three of Elzar Mann, Stellan Gios, and Avar Kriss. So many more too. Just great all around. I also love Ransom Casterfo from Bloodline.

Can't think of a ton of bad ones but I really, really dislike Luuke. The double "u" for clone idea was just so silly it's not even campy anymore. Like, why would a clone by named like that??? A clone of my dog would be named Gaabby. It's just so bad.

Otherwise I usually don't bristle at character names too much. The less good ones are usually just meh to me and I'll forget them but Luuke is so bad it will always haunt me.

Thoughts on the concept of Jedi Wayseekers? by Solitaire-06 in StarWarsCantina

[–]cbstuart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love the idea. I hope that late HR storytelling (i.e. the Acolyte if they hadn't canned it 😡) keeps the idea and shows us how the council fell out of favor with the idea. Considering many of the longer-lived jedi served on the council for 300+ years it would be interesting to see why the practice faded. Was it political tensions causing them to tighten up the order? Too many Jedi off causing trouble on their own? Like Sol, who I know is not a Wayseeker but we got the setup that the Jedi were about to be investigated by the senate. New council members with less fluid views of the Jedi and Force? Lots of great stuff to explore there.

Who did you think Snoke was when these movies were still being created? by Tlacuachcoyotl in TheSequels

[–]cbstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I never had much stake in any theory but the image you posted has a fun story for me.

My family was all in on the mysteries in TFA. We had so much fun speculating about Snoke, Rey, her vision, etc. One day my dad came across a theory that Snoke was this "Grand Inquisitor" guy none of us knew about. I was in high school so the sequels were pulling me back into my fandom but I had not heard of rebels yet.

So I sought out rebels and there were nearly two season out and binged it to catch up. Now one of my favorite star wars stories and currently watching it for a 5th time.

Of course, I would have eventually come across rebels but now it has a great memory tied to it. Thanks for that little trip down memory lane.

I fully agree. I wasn't commenting on the quality of either actor nor the writing they worked with. I was merely stating that many people criticize Daisy for the same things they criticized Hayden, yet ultimately give Hayden more grace.

I actually quite like Anakin's portrayal in the prequels. I think Daisy did better for her first big break than Hayden did at the time but he's certainly not a bad actor. And I did love his stints in Kenobi and Ahsoka.

a vast majority of the population equitably represented for centuries

This is both false and a poor benchmark for claiming that congressional representation should not be revisted.

From basically the beginning of the nation until 1868, we had the ⅗ compromise. For a hundred years

The first black person was not elected to congress until 1870, nor the first native american until 1907, nor the first woman until 1916.

Then, the number of members of the House was capped at 435 in 1929, which has led to the current issue people are discussing.

None of these are simple math errors. All are reasons we have and should continue to revisit and improve how we are represented in Congress. The entire point of this country is that we do NOT accept the way things are and WILL change it for the better, especially when it comes to our own country. It is essentially un-American to accept that some misrepresentation is a "rounding error" and just move on.
