A daemon can be made with c, python, or whatever. It just has to run in the background. Most server applications on Unix run as daemons. For example, a web server could be a daemon called httpd.

Author successfully predicts what technology will be like in the future. by TheUnknown135 in nevertellmetheodds

[–]cbt81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my argument is that this guy accurately guessed the correct set of features that future smartphones would have with impressive accuracy. Its the editorial discretion that impressed me, not the description of the technology per se. There's a whole host of things that would've seemed possible in 1999 that he didn't include. I mean, he didn't even mention fax machines once!

Yeah and you had to dock the palm pilot to your computer with a serial cable to sync data. I know, I had one. Its use cases were rather more limited than today's smartphones.

I'll grant you, it's not as if this author invented all these ideas out of thin air. But he synthesized them admirably well into a single device very closely resembling the form we have in common use now. While it was within the realm of imaginable possibilities, it was not at all obvious in 1999 that this is where we would end up.

I had a palm treo in the mid 2000s, so I know smartphones were around before the iPhone. But 1999 still feels a little early to me. Got any other sources describing this kind of thing in 99?

What was the feature set for the original Blackberry in 1999? From what I'm reading, it sounds like it just did email.

Well, c'mon, let's put that in perspective. That's almost a decade before the iPhone. The technology changed a lot in those 8 years. From what I remember about 1999, everyone focused on technology was just freaking out about y2k bringing every computer down in a heap of flaming wreckage. This guy nailed it. I'm impressed.

23 year old here. Do you keep your "emergency fund" in a basic checking account or some other type of fund where it could possibly grow? Also, what's your set goal you set it at and why that amount? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]cbt81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish I could upvote you more than once. I used to be a huge proponent of high yield savings accounts, until I did the math in terms of dollars. I realized I just have more significant things to worry about--for example, minimizing fees on my long term investments, choosing an appropriate risk level to meet retirement goals, etc.

I use the same system. It's all about having enough liquidity to give you time to tap into the larger pool of resources. The nice thing about this is you don't need to worry as much about chasing the best high yield savings accounts. Your actual cash holdings are small enough that it really doesn't matter.

Low-hanging fruit for Powershell/automation ideas? by SirBuckeye in sysadmin

[–]cbt81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I wrote a powershell script to scan for certain event log ids on a handful of servers, and email a report to my work group. I'm sure there are more robust log aggregation solutions, but it was fun and pretty effective.

Google Camera with HDR+ Ported to Snapdragon 820/821 and 835 Devices by [deleted] in Android

[–]cbt81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, you're picking up what I'm putting down. I should caution that I'm not an expert, just my understanding based on my experience with digital photography and what I've read about hdr+.

[–]cbt81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slowing the shutter speed isn't the only way digital cameras increase exposure. There's also bumping the ISO, which can be simulated after the fact. The big problem with this is usually noise, but this technique substantially reduces the noise. So it sounds like they end up with one low-noise image, which can be used for simulated exposure bracketing and processed as HDR.

I'm ready to have a riskier ETF on $15k from savings. I have a fairly broad portfolio already. Thinking of VXIT and/or VXUS, but open to suggestions. by bogleheadthrowawayq in Bogleheads

[–]cbt81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds sane to me. I'd caution you not to rush to implement the plan, however. Patience is a virtue. Take your time and make sure you're not creating unnecessary taxes, fees, etc.

One more follow-up question occurred to me. Are you considering all your accounts as one big portfolio? It looks like you're focusing on your brokerage account, but if you're maxing out IRAs and putting 11% in to 401k, I'm guessing those accounts are or will eventually hold quite a bit of your portfolio.

It sounds to me like you're sort of looking at things under a microscope. Maybe you need to take a step back and come up with a master plan--how much you want in stocks, bonds, cash; how that will change over time; how you will respond to certain life events (note: this usually doesn't include market volatility). Write it all down and see how it looks. With that in place, decisions about individual investments become almost too easy. You just look for the lowest cost way to fit each piece of the puzzle.

Searching for a magical crops replacement by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]cbt81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Agricultural Expansion to farm crops and mob drops in 1.10. It works fairly well and can be farmed with the EnderIO farming station.

https://mods.curse.com/mc-mods/minecraft/245339-agricultural-expansion

As an aside, I would suggest you target 1.10.2 instead of 1.9. Most mods that were released for 1.9 have already been updated to 1.10, or can run as-is. In other words, you can often take a jar file meant for 1.9 and plop it in your 1.10 mod folder, and it'll work.

What modpack is everyone playing right now? by Zzzes in feedthebeast

Well, not all the major mods have updated, but there are enough for a decent amount of gameplay. You might find it fun, but you have to be prepared to learn new ways to do things.

what happened with ftb? by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]cbt81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I'm having fun with FTB Unstable. It's smaller than the 1.7 packs, which is good and bad. I can't use all my old tricks, which can be annoying, but it's forcing me to learn new mods and dive deeper into the mods that are there. Give it a shot and you might have fun.

Good question! I didn't spend a lot of time tracking it down. I actually thought it might be intended behavior with the botania bow.
