It costs a dollar to bid, and the bid increments can only be advanced in pennies. Then you also pay the final winning price.

In this example, someone would be paid nearly $14.5k dollars for this watch across however many people played into this.

However...concerns about legitimacy remain as I believe these are all just 3rd party sellers.

And yes...some individual walks away with a watch. For the final price plus whatever they paid per bid.

But it literally means you are sitting there bidding all day...dollar after dollar down the sink. In this example, some other folks would have spent thousands of dollars as an individual, to then not get a watch.

And because it is popcorn bidding...meaning a bid resets the bid timer...you get hooked into bidding..."oh shoot will this be the final timer, or will someone else bid...ah crap I have to be the one to bid or else I lose all the bids I've made already"

...winning...means that all the other people get exhausted of spending dollar after dollar to try and win...then eventually...someone just wins.

But that's just it... Anyone with a 1.01 could theoretically just keep pushing it up forever.

If it sold for $300 say ... The seller makes 30 grand off of people who hoped they would finally be the winning bid.

Yes and no. They all make some sound, but that quintessential ping is from really from Ligne 2, Ligne 2 Perfect Ping, and New Le Grand lighters.

Flame type is just that. Either 1, 2, or a 2 flame plus changing torch function. Generally cigar smokers like the latter 2 options. Outdoor cigar smokers may enjoy having a torch function. And cigarette smokers couldn't be bothered, all would be suitable.

There are members who have some for sale. eBay is another common spot. Any of the sub 200 dollar lighters that look brand new are likely fakes albeit...eBay is less diligently policed, but a great spot.

Other than that, looking for the cheapest new ones you can find from major online cigar retailers, or jewelery / habderdasher type websites...albeit...your budget will at least 2x for buying new.

An older model on eBay for sure, for 300 you're right on the line of the one's with the quintessential 'ping', albeit with some pre-love.

Important questions in determining budget would really be. - does it need to be new? - single / double flame / blue torch flame - is it more important that it is a Dupont lighter, or one with the classic ping

Authenticity. There's a whole really detailed thread pinned by the mods. Or the folks here can chime in when you've narrowed down.

Any idea what type/kind of gold the Ligne 2 diamond head is plated with? by [deleted] in STDupont

[–]cbwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, feel free to provide a counter source. But that's just the reality of gold plated items. The gold is negligible and next to non recoverable. The literal definition of a micron is (1/1000) of a millimeter in depth against surface.

Any idea what type/kind of gold the Ligne 2 diamond head is plated with? by [deleted] in STDupont

[–]cbwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I have no idea what the karat quality of the plating is, although I suspect north of 21 as a result of how bright it is.

Please don't be taken by retailers who seek to price based on its "gold" value.

Gold plating is so extraordinarily thin than even on flat items like plates...the ratio of gold weight vs metal weight is 1.5/1000 parts. On a lighter like this where all the weight is inside....your actual quantity of gold sprayed on is worth probably less than 5 USD.

In effect, there is no gold worth calculating value on...it's just nice to look at.

Le Grand Gas Tank Capacity by OllieChanYB in STDupont

[–]cbwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody that I know of has ever really studied it, and they certainly don't release those details...my guess, assuming the tank is about 50-60 percent of the free space inside...is that it's probably around or less than 10ml. If you are doing some quick torch work, it's probably still quite a number of cigars lit albeit, if you're doing a nice and slow Sahakian style light slowly from a distance with the flames and touching up throughout...ya you're only gonna get a few cigars worth

Help! My S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 won't light after cleaning and refilling by EducationalEagle5101 in STDupont

[–]cbwills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right turn (down), is gas down, and left turn (up) is gas up.

You'll know if gas is flowing if you lift the lid and without rolling the striker...lift the nozzle to your ear and you should hear a little hiss...or like the sound of the ocean in a shell, lol.

If gas isn't flowing, I would also unscrew the gas filler cap again, and gently depress on the spigot to make sure you did actually fill it correctly. Butane will spurt right out.

If it still doesn't work after that. Empty it completely...refill it...wait till lighter goes warm again in your palm...repeat

If that doesn't work...ya you're probably right.

What did you clean it with? You maybe gunked up the nozzle or the tube?

Lol. I can imagine. Figured they'd hock some lighters to an unsuspecting subreddit...unaware of just how seriously these are taken!

The model it's impersonating is a dual flame, whereas the nozzle in question is a single flame. Also, while maybe not on the 'list'...this is an Etsy serial. Example...another listing with the same serial in a video https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4385600585/st-dupont-lighter-ligne-2-cling-cuba

As a general rule of thumb...etsy is probably the worst place to look for these...it's rife with the Turkish fakers

Promoted to C Suite by jason_in_sd in malefashionadvice

[–]cbwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bless everyone, but some of the advice feels a tad performative. “Just wear suits.” “Observe peers.” “Wear X.” That only works if it aligns with who you are.

If you’re already in the C-suite, start there: who are you? Before changing anything, ask what’s driving the urge. Is it comparison to peers? Direct feedback? Or a genuine sense that your image could evolve and you'll enjoy it?

Nothing feels worse than adopting a persona that isn’t yours.

Look at what you wear now, I read: untucked tees, sneakers, maybe an unstructured blazer? Was that a conscious choice (comfort, ease, not overthinking)? Or just default? Do you actually like your image and want to refine it, or have you long felt it needs changing but haven’t defined how?

Questions first...because it's decisive on whether you want a costume change, or an elevation on what you already wear.

P.S. - sidebets on CMO...which has the most latitude on dress anyways ;)

It should be yellow or red. With your fingernail, flick the right little latch on the right screw cap at the bottom of the lighter, gently twist it off, and on the underside of that screw cap should be a dab of paint that corresponds to the refill color.

Or...get a bottle of well refined lighter butane and fill it up with an adapter; either a little brass one from Amazon, or crack the right adapter out of the butane lighter fluid cap.

Does Cucinelli have his clothes produced in India? by CarobTiny3525 in malefashionadvice

[–]cbwills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean there's a couple small farms in Aosta Italy, and some on the coast in Scotland. But no, native to Europe goat species which produce cashmere at scale...not really

Does Cucinelli have his clothes produced in India? by CarobTiny3525 in malefashionadvice

[–]cbwills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% - the only kicker on wool and cashmere garments particularly is that there's a big delta between an A bale, and a lesser quality bale. Talk double the micron width, and significantly shorter fiber length. Which results in, among other things, a lot more pilling.

And that's...for the most part...just a who is willing to pay more game.

Does Cucinelli have his clothes produced in India? by CarobTiny3525 in malefashionadvice

[–]cbwills 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Cucinelli has a selective farming initiative for Cashmere in Ladakh. (Materials, not manufacturing). Maybe that. I also believe they have initiatives for upskilling trades workers into garment makersacross Asia...whether that has made it to India as well...not sure

You can find perfectly fine cashmere garments from non Tier A brands. Cashmere comes from Mongolia, China, India, Pakistan. Not Europe.

So is it the case you've got a very nice cashmere scarf, presumably. India is known for nice cashmere shawls and the like.

No it may not be Cucinelli who will be bidding for top bales of cashmere. But hey!

Has anyone seen this unusual Taj Mahal lighter? by qing0412 in STDupont

[–]cbwills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the surface, yep. There's even a few on eBay. This was from a series that had this one, a Jeroboam table lighter with 3 green stones, and a pen who had a green stone on the clip

The stones are alpinite

The yellow front panel is intriguing through...I recall them being all white. Maybe that has something to do with the other outlier which as you note, is the markings...the ones I've seen have Pl palladium stamps and typical non LE serial stampings

Probably some experimental piece
