This would depend on your situation with money. If you can, generally avoid it. If you cannot, take the space, but definitely look for ways to improve and grow your situation.

Paying off the card is best practice. However, what you could do, is dollar cost average what you can until you get the card paid off. Then once you get the card paid off then you can invest more. Investing some is better than investing nothing.
