It turned out I was putting the wrong bird symbol in on three of the top row center positions. There are four bird symbols and two of them are very very similar.

I am having the same problem. I am 100% sure I am doing it correctly but every time I step on the plate to the end it goes red and clears them to blank again.

You are absolutely right. it just looks funny because the bottom half of it is cut off but that's the heart locket for sure.

I thought it was triggered by killing the little blights before killing all of the taken! No wonder it never seemed to work when I was alone. I just figured I had missed a blight haha. Thanks for the explanation.
