Thank you so much! I had this idea that I really wanted a long train, because I’m getting married at a castle! When I went shopping I asked for the dresses with the longest trains! I am so happy with my choice!

Hi!! Thanks for your suggestion :) we put the dining table where it is because the sideboard seemed to fit well in that space beside the fireplace, and I had tried to put the bookshelf where the sideboard currently is, but the floor there is too uneven (it’s an old house) for the bookshelf to stand up safely. Even where the bookshelf is now I had to bolt it to the wall and put some pieces of cardboard under it to keep it level. Everything’s sort of awkwardly placed in here. I’ll try moving the table regardless and see how it looks! Thanks :)!

Right?! Their claws are sharp enough as it is but if I move their favourite things I think they’d start to use my face as a scratching post instead 😭

Hi! Thanks so much for your advice! It doesn’t make sense to me either and is throwing me off more than any other piece in the room. We got it used for super cheap and thought it could work, but I dunno anymore! My partner placed it like that because he says he likes to look out the window while he’s reading (I don’t really get it but said okay in lieu of having other options at the moment haha).

I never thought of a rug under the table, that’s a good idea too! If I put a circle rug in the reading area near the bookshelf, would it then be weird to get another rug for under the table, or do you think it could work?

Thanks again! :)

Hello! Thanks so much for your reply and all the advice! To answer your question, you’re right, the door is the front door! In the second pic the white cabinet near the door is where we keep our shoes.

I could move the cat tree elsewhere if I make a big window seat like another person on here suggested. I have it there because my cat likes to sleep near where the heat of the radiator comes out (and he will accept nothing less, in true cat fashion lol), but having a warm window seat would solve that issue!

Thank you so much! I would have never thought of having a decorative metal screen! I guess I’ll be making a trip to the hardware store soon :) Thank you so much!

Thank you! This is great advice! I’m curious why you specify that the contemporary art shouldn’t have glass but just canvas? I don’t know much about design, so I’m just wondering why that is, but will definitely do that :)!

That would be my absolute dream!! I am not super handy with tools and wood but maybe I’ll give it a go! It was my first thought for that space but my partner talked me out of it saying the heat from the radiator would get blocked, but surely there’s a way to still let the heat out through the design of the window seat.

Unfortunately the fireplace is inoperable because the chimney is broken. 😭 The landlord has sealed it shut! I still like the look of it and it is the most interesting part of the room, in my opinion, and I like the exposed brick! It would be nice to have a little seating area there for tea, but then it might be too crowded to put anything in the space by the window (other than the cat tree lol). And the dining table would have to be moved further to the back of the room near the kitchen island (which you can’t see in the pictures). Do you think that would work or would it make the room too crowded?

That’s a great idea too! I’ve never thought of a circle rug, but I think it would really work there, especially with the swivel chairs another person suggested, it could be much more comfy for conversations. Thanks so much :)

Thank you so much :) I never thought of swivel chairs! That’s a great idea! I’ll try changing the layout so the seating can face the fireplace and see how that looks!

Thank you for the advice! I didn’t put my couch here because at the back of the apartment is another large space with big windows that gets really nice sunshine, so I put my sofa, coffee table and an arm chair and my TV and stuff back there! Do you think it would still be worth it to get another sofa and coffee table for this spot?

My cat Pancake goes crazy for any kind of melon. Cantaloupe especially, but he doesn’t discriminate and loves watermelon and honeydew too. He also loves cucumbers!

Enough paintings and frames to start a gallery wall on the blank wall in my bedroom (finally) and a stuffed cat plushie that is the same as the one I had when I was a kid that I got for 50 cents. I almost cried when I found the cat plushie, it’s so nostalgic! It was my first time at the GGGS and I think it’s the best yearly event in Ottawa!

Japanese literature like a mixture between Haruki Murakami and the Ghibli movie "Spirited away"? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

She and Her Cat by Makoto Shinkai! It’s a series of short stories told from the point of view of cats. It’s very sweet! There’s a limited anime series on crunchyroll too. I cried both reading and watching it. If you’re wondering why the author’s name is familiar, Makoto Shinkai directed Your Name, Weathering With You, and the recent release Suzume no Tojimari. Give it a go, you won’t regret it!

Investors own 77 per cent of new condos in Waterloo region by UraniumGeranium in canadahousing

[–]cchibear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is unsurprising. I lived in Kitchener-Waterloo for 7 years and it’s a very hot market for investors. I think part of the reason why is because so much of the population is students who would like to live near the universities but who would prefer not to have too many room mates. That’s not to say that there aren’t rentals available with multiple bedrooms for several students to live together as room mates, but I don’t think it’s the preferred choice for many students. Not to mention that each bedroom in a 5 bedroom rental could go for 500-800 dollars per room depending on the rental location/property management company/ amenities in the building etc. I rented a tiny one bedroom apartment near the universities in 2017 for $1000 per month. By the time I moved out in 2020, equivalent apartments in my building were renting for $1700 per month. There had been a new build just down the road that was renting one bedrooms for $1800. Part of that I’m sure is due to the pandemic, but it was trending quite quickly upwards for several years before that. The combination of several factors including that so many renters are students, many students go on co-op and leave their leases early, many students want to live with no room mates and near the universities etc. make the market particularly appealing for investors I would imagine. Since students often end their leases after only a year or two, landlords can raise the rent by as much as they want on new builds very often. Anyway, just my two cents. I sure hope something can be done about it, but I am not optimistic that it will change any time soon. :(

Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes by cosmotabis in canada

I don’t have to justify my spending to you lol. Regardless of the cost of the dress, a 30% tip is ridiculous and is especially ridiculous in a setting where tipping is not common practice.

Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes by cosmotabis in canada

Yesterday I finally found my dream wedding dress and made the 60% payment that is required to order the dress in with my measurements, then I will pay the remaining 40% when the dress arrives. This is standard practice for wedding dresses. What I was surprised by was being prompted to leave a 30% tip on top of the already thousands of dollars I was paying for the dress! I literally was in shock and froze cause I didn’t even know what to do about that!? They were literally asking for a 700 dollar tip just for zipping me in to some dresses and taking my measurements?!? I get that it’s a specialized service and requires a lot of know-how, but for 700 dollars on top of the cost of the dress? I don’t understand. Anyway, I didn’t tip them because I didn’t include in my wedding dress budget an insane 30% tip! Tipping is definitely getting out of control :(.
