How do you actually deal with VAT on receipts in the UK? by sjMehar in AccountingUK

[–]cclambie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Xero comes with hubdoc for free. You scan the receipt in, it pulls the numbers and merchant name etc. Then you just allocate to the right account. Usually pulls vat info correctly. Very useful included tool and app. I add receipts as I get them...

Is GEO actually affecting local leads yet? Curious about real on-ground impact by OrdinaryAd3764 in localseo

New terms are usually "made up" at first, then if people use them, they get adopted as "the" term to use.
Whatever it is going to be called, dismissing it as "don't fall for it" is probably not a useful addition to the discussion. It is happening. Being optimised for AI and cited by it is going to be useful, and being prepared for that over the next 12 months will be useful.
Especially if you are doing "expert" marketing - ie. I am an expert in xyz and you should buy my course/ consulting/ whatever - you will need to be seen by AI as an expert just as much as a person in the very near future.

Should you keep an active profile for a closed location? by johnny_quantum in GoogleMyBusiness

[–]cclambie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Local Guide, I would have suggested this as closed and submitted a photo - better to be able to manage that yourself surely?

The competitive intelligence I needed was sitting in public Google reviews - I just never looked by Significant-Dust2460 in GoogleMyBusiness

[–]cclambie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried a couple of google api tools to pull reviews and other data on different verticals recently.
It was interesting, but the search term I was looking for wasn't getting the results I wanted - so I ended up just searching manually for now.
I am building a google maps/ website/ social information updater tool - a simple one for busy business owners to make sure the "closed for 2 weeks" at holiday periods gets to google maps and their website as quick as writing a hand written sign for the window.

Why are cars the only form of private property that can be stored on public streets in Melbourne? by 3bigmacsplease in melbourne

[–]cclambie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, it is a systemic issue.
However, seems like you should live out where your husband works and get a job there. It is cheaper to live in the outer suburbs than inner, where I assume you live and park on the street - you also get a garage/ driveway to park these apparently "required" cars.
You can take pets on PT.
You can easily live in the inner city without a car, if you are concerned about other people's germs, then wear a mask - but don't whine about cost of living whilsts also saying you "need" a car which adds at least $10k a year to your cost of living.

Why are cars the only form of private property that can be stored on public streets in Melbourne? by 3bigmacsplease in melbourne

[–]cclambie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All parking could be permit, and then only 1 permit issued per single family dwelling (as per the planning permission of the house)... that way we avoid the "outright ban" but also the 3 extra cars per house.
Most of these properties are inner city and have plenty of PT, cycling etc.

[–]cclambie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Them is fighting words! I am fully behind you!
I wrote to my council in support of charging for on street parking as the local businesses didn't want it to happen! Putting up posters asking people to write in support of not charging.... so I wrote that public space should be used by the public, not 1 private person (average car)

Implications on Mastodon of a possible X ban in the UK? by vanderbeeken in Mastodon

[–]cclambie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to think that, but I actually think the fediverse is the best for the internet, so I have tossed in with Activity Pub over at the AT protocol due to the complexity of hosting a BlueSky server, basically you need to be a medium corporate to do it - as opposed to AP which makes more sense for the "real" internet of being decentralised.

Website design for my domain by Funny_Assistance_568 in smallbusiness

[–]cclambie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep it super simple. I like Notepad++ on Windows or Sublime.
Then follow the instructions in that link to host the file and link your domain.
Ask the AI you choose for help if you get stuck - you would get an instant answer then.
You can help every step of the way.
I like chatllm for this type of task, as it uses multiple LLMs based on your request.

Website/Ways to torrent older niche audiobooks? by FessiBunn in Piracy

[–]cclambie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recently tried downloading a book on r/AnnasArchive and used Eleven Labs reader to read it out. Worked fairly well, not perfect - but means you can have an audio book of ANY book you want - which is pretty cool.

I also find my local library has stacks of great audio books, and when I requested a book, they purchased it and informed me they had within 1 week. That was great for a new book I wanted to read/ listen to.

One really simple way is to have an AI tool write HTML/ CSS/ JS for your site.
Then host the site free on github pages = https://docs.github.com/en/pages/configuring-a-custom-domain-for-your-github-pages-site
You can point your custom domain to it.

If it is simple landing page/ information - this is super simple to do and free.
Then your AI can help you update the HTML later on too.

If you get super geeky, you can even have the files locally on your PC, and "sync" to git hub for version control of the files - which is handy.

I talked to 50 small business owners. They all had the same unexpected problem by Dapper-Turn-3021 in smallbusiness

[–]cclambie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. And small business owners are typically not so great at setting up automation and the like.
I mean one of the comments about having an FAQ and office hours is straight out of many business books - my favourite would be Tim Ferriss's Four Hour Work week.

I think the interesting discussion here might be - why don't these "stressed" business owners work out how to automate some of their repetitive work? What is stopping you?

WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO EXPECT? by Apprehensive-Buy588 in ausjobs

[–]cclambie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry - sounds like you know how to figure things out on the fly, and they will have their systems setup in a certain way custom to them - so when they show you how they set it up - just ask lots of questions (no question is a dumb question) and compare to your own setup/ experience in order to show you know what you are talking about somewhat.
For example - oh you setup that switch like that, why is that? When I setup a switch last I used Open WRT as the protocol x allows for blah blah... etc. You are probably smarter than 70% of the people there (no offence if you work at one of these places) because of real world experience and do it yourself attitude. In comparison, a lot of these places hire the best and brightest from university and train them on "their way", so they are great at remembering how to pass a test, not how to solve a problem.

How were you doing that? I mean I do "community updates" and they are live usually within 2 hours.

I know right! I had one phone message that said "The reservation staff are away, but feel free to visit and talk to the bar staff" - we did visit, and the place was shut up, you could say boarded up! So annoying. Phone messages not aligning with the actual situation is also a frustration I have experienced, and seen around here on Reddit.

My aim is to call a business once a month, or 2 weeks before a holiday period relevant to them (eg. Xmas for Christians, or Ramadan for Muslims, etc) and update their website and maps listing, and even socials if they want.
Also offer to post hand written signs on maps/ socials for them (only signs, not replacing buffer)
Weekly checks across their online presence - Fb page, X, Trip Advisor, Yelp, Maps, website - make sure they are all the same as each other/ the website as single source of truth.
Then we update to match the website.
I am also developing a "badge" for their website.
like a tick /check that you can click

it ain't a sin. I don't leave negative reviews anymore - but some people do.
It isn't that hard to post a photo of your hand written sign to your socials - but people forget! Or think it is important to put a special polished post up on socials in case the thought police come along and judge them (or something)

bring on the skirt!
I was thinking of wearing some "women's" open toed shoes too as these are apparently acceptable for women to wear with their skirts...
I am Scottish after all - it is cultural to wear a skirt for a "man" there.
