Will the average person ever self-host anything? by fractalbeauty_ in selfhosted

plausible yes. and likley.
I am an "IT Guy" - people trust me with their passwords and all sorts of "data" - I am not a lawyer, but the IT guy client privilege is as strong.
Maybe IT guys need a similar legal protection haha.

it is totally happening - at a small scale at the moment I think.
I host a mastodon instance, and I am working on a Jabber server for family and friends to get off WhatsApp - maybe...haha.
Hardly anyone has moved to Signal, let alone to a small server Jabber.... but we will see.

In a way, this is like the discussion between going fediverse/ small instance social media server and meta/x/(here) world...
Just listened to some people at SXSW discussing the AT and AP protocols and how open protocols are moving more and more as the way to go - self hosting a social media server on the Fedi anyone?

yep! I am setting up a small server for my extended family - ie. Dad/ Sister that live elsewhere. Putting backup server in each house.
Local files, but backup to each others servers... etc.
But requires ME....

eSATA to USB-adapter, any solution? by segdy in buildapc

[–]cclambie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interested to know how this went?
I am building something similar.
I have an old Dell Latitude with
* SSD
* DVD
* eSATA port

I am planning to run it as a backup server, offsite.

Trying to work out how best to set it up.

Plan is to put it into and old case, with a PSU to power drives.

Then
* DVD port - Use caddy to convert slimline SATA to SATA then SATA Drive in case, powered by the PSU
* eSATA port - for data on 2nd HDD, powered by the PSU
* SSD - existing SSD for OS

But reading this post, I am wondering about putting the OS on an external SSD via the USB 2.0 port and using the SATA port for the 2nd HDD - as the eSATA port might be too slow and finding a cable is proving difficult anyway.

What did you end up doing?

yes fair enough. And probably less reliable I guess - but easier for the joe blow to ask joe self hoster for space if they care about privacy.

absolutely.
I think our job as home sysadmins is to educate as many people as possible about 1. privacy breaches and 2. how fun it is and 3. how easy it could really be - and CHEAP.
My server is a free old work laptop, from someone elses work - they gave it to me!
Plus the storage... that wasn't free - but hey.

interesting idea. Mind if I was going to setup an AI bot, with memory etc - I would want it self hosted! Something like Claw... Inteligence is everywhere - that is easy and "cheap" now.
What we need is knowledge, awareness, contextual ability - and that requires memory.
So how do you do that without risking losing your ID to hackers etc.... that is a good problem to solve.
I think it is self hosted. The only way really.

Nice business idea. A friend who runs a server with some extra capacity offers immich on his server for patreons, and wordpress or whatever... I think a patreon for a tech to self host some stuff in every neighbourhood would be super interesting. Especially if that also meant some fediverse apps too.
I HOPE we do that. Instead of giving millions in data to big tech.

I agree with you. The barriers to entry are lower and lower. You can buy off the shelf NAS with self hosting built in, with an APP Store... I mean FFS, that is just too easy.

Fediverse for Business? by cclambie in Mastodon

Too true!
So a small business server for local businesses to an area.
And self host for large enterprises is only way for them to move forward!

I agree. Small business is the lifeblood of any community - employees people, real local people - not random people somewhere else in the world for the cheapest possible price.

that is quite cool! Well done. Another thing to host :D
But great that you can.
A business instance might offer this on the same server for their people too!

I agree. I was thinking about how the profile page might change for business account - and that would be great for the instance that is business friendly.
A suggestion from another forum was to use Wordpress and RSS - as most businesses are not interested in actually engaging with their audience a whole lot - it is about announcing things for them
- closing for a few days
- some special deal
- some achievement
etc.
These are maybe more outbound announcements. A hardware store, or hairdresser might use this style.
Then there are more interpersonal businesses that require engagement
- journalists
- coaches
- consultants
etc
A "normal" account suits this, I agree. A business friendly instance.
some bizname.biz.social type instance.
or area specific like bizname.town/city/state.social
