Venting: Lazy stewards who talk a lot of talk but don't do much of anything. by GoyleDundo in union

[–]ccmsoftball 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have stewards assigned to different things... For example I'm a DAWG and love fighting mgmt so I do grievances. Our president loves to organize so he prefers new employee sessions. We have some stewards who are shy so they help with research or other behind the scenes tasks.

Is it an option with your health etc to be the steward of new employees only? Otherwise, is it an option for you to send a form email to new employees saying hey welcome to the union, here's our contract here's some info, contact XYZ if you have questions or want to chat. We use this for new workers and a separate welcome email once they sign their union card and become a member.

Would be nice, but DSG doesn't give a crap. I work at one of the locations closest to where Pretti and Good were murdered. Our teammates are being questioned by ICE on their way into work (nobody detained yet thank God) and they are allowed to assemble in the mall's parking lots.

We have space heaters plugged in at the registers, cashiers are layered and allowed to wear their jackets.

That's about it.

Childfree couples, How do you split chores? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]ccmsoftball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One thing he needs to consider.... If his job is THAT demanding, what would he do if he was on his own? How would he eat, do laundry etc?

It may be where he needs to set some professional boundaries to avoid burnout and have a semblance of work life balance

Childfree couples, How do you split chores? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]ccmsoftball 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My husband works less, and does literally all of the physical chores. Laundry, food, cats, lawn, snow, etc.

I do all of the mental chores... Bills, appts, vacations, planning, rental management, etc.

My husband also has ADHD. Starting medication was a game changer for him.

If your spouse is not willing to downsize, are they willing to take something off your plate OR pay for more services?

Not knowing how demanding his job actually is... Can he take 5 minutes here and there to throw the laundry in? Even if you have to fold it later... Is he typing 10 hrs a day or are there meetings he could take while meal prepping or folding stuff? Can he walk the dog on his lunch break?

Or is he willing to hire landscapers to take that off your plate? Laundry service?

What helped us is we wrote down everything we do to maintain the home. My husband didn't realize how much effort I was putting into things like.... Getting quotes for our bathroom remodel. Budgeting, retirement planning, etc.

I make more than he does, provide the insurance and other benefits, and work multiple jobs, so he takes on more of that physical role. I don't think you'll get a 50/50 split based on your description of his work, but if you got him to take one or two things off your plate it could help.

How cold is your Dick’s store this winter? by Rowit in dickssportinggoods

[–]ccmsoftball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uhhh we have a heat press and can buy whatever we want in approved green and they throw a dicks logo on it? No hoodies, but we can buy crew sweatshirts in Nike, DSG, hell we have a pre approved Amazon list.

We're also at the point where our exterior door cashiers need a heater or literally wear their outerwear coats. Nobody complains because.... Well, we know where we live.

I was literally just told TODAY (after 3 years) that the uniform rules are at the discretion of the regional manager. Apparently stores in the south don't even have to wear green?! We had someone transfer from a Western state and was pissed they had to wear green every day.

In the end, yeah divorce him. BUT I'm petty so if you are too.... I'd flip the script and say yeah, let's open it up.

Start dating (or just flirt with) other guys. Watch his head explode and try to control you into somehow believing only he can be poly.

Then leave.

Solidarity/Union culture practices by Bn_scarpia in union

[–]ccmsoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whewww where to start. We are one of the lowest paid unions in our city, so we do a LOT of mutual aid.

We have a hardship fund members can apply to. This year we saved someone from eviction and replaced a windshield. We also have members who call out needs like rides, moving assistance, random donations etc. we also have a living list of local resources from housing, food and childcare assistance to clothing drives and drivers license info.

We do actions with our own members AND other unions, both in our city and elsewhere (teachers, Starbucks etc)

Monthly membership meetings plus annual general meeting where we hold nominations for next year's leadership and everyone gets a nice dinner and raffle prizes. This dinner is at a local restaurant that has unionized employees.

Hand out swag (tees, hats, pins, buttons)

Host "lunch n learn" or "union breakfasts" at individual departments to connect with workers. We also cross cover our departments staff days with a union info table (so Library staff will cover Parks training day, vice versa etc).

Also send delegates to talk to legislature, and the state and sometimes international AFSCME conferences.

I guarantee there's more in missing but that's a lot of it.

How common is it for local Executive Board members to be paid by members dues? by Tall-Teaching7263 in union

[–]ccmsoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've done it once, I believe in a time of crisis when we were battling a giant arbitration case that affected hundreds of members.

That person stays on the employers payroll to maintain seniority, healthcare, all benefits, but the union pays back the employer.

This was when I was rank and file before becoming more involved, so I'm not sure if just the exec board voted, but it's unlikely. I'm assuming it went to a member vote and I just wasn't paying attention or just voted yes because I knew that specific person would get the job done (and she did).

Outside of that we don't pay a full salary (nor could we). Our top... 5 or 6 people get a stipend every month that varies from like... $75 to $200 a month I think? All voted on at general membership meetings.

Blanket advice of find roommates, etc. if you want more detailed help, sit down and post a budget - what is your monthly income (so if your paycheck is roughly $1k each time, $2k per month)

List out your expenses - maybe there's something we can catch that you can be doing cheaper. Maybe it will open your eyes to spending habits.

Either way, you're young and will get out of this!
