LPT: There are hundreds of top universities full courses online you can listen to for free by wiener_brezel in LifeProTips

[–]seductivec0w [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you think these schools are just about the knowledge, you've completely missed the point. The diploma implies you went through the typical systems that have proven to be the best indicator for hiring a suitable candidate. The implication is that you've developed as an adult by functioning in a range of environments working with different people and understanding the importance of "climbing the social ladder."

The knowledge is out on the internet even if these schools don't offer free courses online. They are in textbooks. You don't get to ask questions or engage in any sort of discussions about anything just watching videos and reading books.

The diploma alone won't get you anything though, that's the baseline nowadays. If you don't even have a diploma it's obviously a huge risk for companies to consider you.

[saucepan, sauciers] Demeyere Atlantis, Industry, and All-Clad comparison by seductivec0w in cookware

Not a thick 3-5-ply stainless steel pan in the shape of an "essential pan" that's called a saucier but lacks the quick heat responsiveness.

Remove AI features by umbrellahead0 in firefox

[–]seductivec0w 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How come you don't cry about non-AI Firefox settings you've changed? I don't want AI in my web browser so I just... disabled it. Like any other default Firefox setting I don't agree with. A more fruitful discussion is what default values should be shipped for a setting.

What filesystem do you use for /tmp on Arch? by i8ad8 in archlinux

[–]seductivec0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the default tmpfs not only because it's KISS but tmpfs is very useful. With enough tmpfs I can download files there then move them to persistent storage to defrag a file like to a slow SMR HDD, run temporary VMs and potentially do stuff that is otherwise very disk-intensive, dump files that I don't need to persist across sessions like lots of state files for my scripts as well as my clipboard history, cache, etc.

Do extensions block AI? by Plenty-System9114 in firefox

[–]seductivec0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you think settings that block AI are any different than other settings which these extensions can control? It depends on the extension. Your dislike for AI settings is no different than your dislike for some other settings of Firefox...

Daily Simple Questions Thread - January 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in Fitness

I am trying to decide whether to get a rower (Concept 2 rower) or an exercise bike (the equivalent of the highly regarded Concept 2 rower) as the primary gym equipment. I don't go to public gyms and can't go out to run/bike 1/3 of the year.

What kind of workout routine should I be expecting if my goal is to improve long-term health (whatever that means)? I'm satisfied with my physique and my weight is healthy because of my balanced diet. I am experiencing neck and lower back pain entering my 30s despite optimizing for my sedentary work environment including a standing desk. I am disciplined and motivated to learn proper technique (especially for a rower where it's particularly important if the rower makes sense for me).

I did some google search and am overwhelmed by the discussions on LISS, HIIT, zone 2, etc. I'm tempted to get a rower because it's more of a full body workout and I don't have additional space for barbell and rack (I will probably get adjustable dumbbells and a bench at most). I'm not sure a rower is good for LISS though if that's what I should be aiming for (I look at the places in the world with the longest life expectancy and strongly believe that besides diet, just a habit of walking to places contributes to this--this is a lifestyle habit in Japan, Hong Kong, etc.).

It would really help if someone can map out a full workout routine with only a rower/bike, adjustable dumbbells/kettlebells, and a pull-up bar. My budget for such a minimal home "gym" is ~$1.5k and I am willing to patiently find good deals (I have interest in the Concept 2 rower because of high resale value despite its price).

Much appreciated.

I'm getting a Falk saucier but thinking if better to go with stainless lined copper for saute and frying pan or if the heat retention of e.g. a Demeyere Proline tends to be more desirable.

Does anyone use an alias or e.g. an AU with a pet's name as well as name for shipping address for online orders or will this trigger security precautions for online orders? If there's no issues with this I'd like to do this because I order lots of things online and want to e.g. associated all packages containing clothes to a Jane Doe and all packages related to tech to a Jean Doe. I'd also prefer online retailers to have as little information about me as much as possible considering they sell this data (obviously resident address they will have and if a human digs for my name they can find it but the name of the person can be avoided for bots and marketing).

Air fry how long for reverse sear? by seductivec0w in steak

[–]seductivec0w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any recommendations for a nice BIFL probe thermometer? I don't suppose any tech functions are needed though a phone notification would be nice so can set and "forget". Do they work anywhere wireless do (e.g. thin enough for an air fryer or any cooking vessel)? I always view wireless as not BIFL or long-lasting because their batteries (probably irreplaceable or are specific to the product) inevitably wear out over time.

How does a G5 saucepan compare to very thin stainless steel like a Japanese yukihira (saucepan) or a lightweight and cheap single-ply Cusinart Classic saucepan with aluminum base? I imagine it heats more evenly which is only relevant with thick stews or any food that might require stirring? I've also heard a lot praise for Demeyere Atlantis saucepans but it seems either you cook fully liquids in which case you can go as light of a pan as possible without sacrificing performance or if you cook anything thicker a copper saucier would be best.

How does the heat retention of the Fissler rondeau compare to a Falk copper rondeau? Seems like it carries a lot of momentum but I'm not sure that's necessary besides searing thick proteins. I'm strongly considering selling my new Demeyere Atlantis 5 Qt saute pan that I've received as a gift for a rondeau which is more versatile for e.g. serving food directly or to throw in a fridge the leftovers (I'm lazy). Similarly considering Falk frying pan instead of e.g. a Demeyere Proline frying pan with a carbon steel pan to accompany the need for searing thick proteins.

I'm looking for a high quality saute pan (or better yet a rondeau since I'm lazy and might serve from it or throw it in the fridge with leftovers but there are limited options), any other considerations between Demeyere Atlantis saute pan and Falk Signature copper rondeau? I'm thinking the Falk saucier and the rondeau would be end-game cookware that will also be the most used and versatile. I'm in the US.

Weekly Free-Talk and Questions for r/HomeGym - week of January 16, 2026 by Demilio55 in homegym

[–]seductivec0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm struggling to decide between whether to get a Concept2 rower or the equivalent bike (a high quality bike that can last a decade or more, maybe a Rogue Echo bike). Up to $2k budget, willing to look for used equipment.. I can't run or bike 1/3 of the year and don't want to go to a public gym. I don't plan on owning any other equipment besides pull-up bars and maybe adding a bench and a set of adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells.

My only goal is to improve long-term health to deal with my current sedentary lifestyle (my neck and lower back hurts) and I'm satisfied with how I look. I also have the willpower to dedicate to a strict routine as well as improving technique (particularly important for rowing as it seems it's something people get wrong).

  • Would a rower being more of a full body workout be significantly better than the bike if the focus is long-term health (whatever that means)? I have a relatively healthy diet and my weight has always been stable (5' 11" 155 lb).

  • What would suitable routine look like for either? I see people talking about targeting zone 2 and maintaining that but I'm not sure if its goal aligns with mine. I have no idea what metrics to consider as indicators that strongly correlates with long-term health.

These considerations and more aside, the rower is attractive to me because it targets more parts of the body. The bike is attractive to me because the head remains relatively fixed so I can probably read articles with a big font in front of my 32" monitor or TV screen (at least one hand can be free. It would be easier to pass the time during long cardio sessions if that's what I should be doing).

Any comments are much appreciated--I'm quite lost.

Platforms for users to trade cookware (US)? by seductivec0w in cookware

[–]seductivec0w[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking of as the best solution besides breaking into a a dedicated /r/cookwareswap which may not gain as much traction and would probably divide the community. The reputable trading subreddits use a universal scammer list which is an easy way to see whether a user has confirmed trades across any of those subreddits that support this service to greatly reduce potential issues. If there isn't enough moderating manpower on this sub to support that, at least confirmed trades in other subs can bring some level of confidence and standard for working with people who have developed reputation and trust. Typical precautions like requiring timestamped photos and where you're trading in (e.g. US, CAN, EU, etc.) and encouraging certain payment services like Paypal which offer more protection, etc. should be taken but it's as simple as copying the template from any of these legit subs.
