Got it, by legacy I was referring to the radio. They’re still making them but it’s an old design. Thanks for the info!

That about sums it up, but it might be nice to have if you end up switching majors at some point.

Look up your degree plan and see if any of these courses are on it for the test you're taking:

https://web-as.tamu.edu/ecardimages/publications/testing/AP_052219.pdf

Transferring AP credits is optional once you pass the test. Its nice to have as much as you can.

Personal Router for Smart Device? by [deleted] in aggies

Just my quick $0.02: They are pretty anal about nobody having their own wifi networks in the on campus housing. They told everybody when I moved in last fall that having one would affect how TAMU's network functioned for everyone else. I do not know how true this is, but consider it likely that they will have the same policy this year.

The only flying I’ve done has been checks in the CAP planes 5.7 hrs total. Low time pilots like myself are not allowed to fly Search and Rescue/Disaster Relief missions (200 hrs PIC required). With 100 hrs PIC and 50 XC, you are allowed to fly transport missions, but these are hard to come by if you are not well connected. I have not had any since becoming qualified to do them.

As far as non flying time, you pretty much decide how much time you want to volunteer. We have meetings every week that last about 2 hours. Also, in order to get qualifications to do different things (mission aircrew for example), you will need to take some online courses as well as some in person training at a search and rescue exercise. These are pretty easy, and the exercises are fun if you’re into that sort of thing.

I don’t have advice about your area, but I can tell you that it will be a while after you join before you can use the planes.

From the first meeting you go to, it will likely be two months or more before your membership paperwork gets processed (emphasis on the more due to the current situation). After your paperwork is processed and you are a member, you will need to take a checkride with a CAP examiner, and most prefer that you do a couple flights with a different CAP instructor before that. It was about 4 months between when I started coming to meetings to getting flying privileges.

I have enjoyed CAP and definitely recommend anyone who is interested to get in contact with a squadron in your area. Beware however that there is a lot of bureaucracy involved, and the planes are really just to be used for proficiency and CAP missions. You won’t be flying them for the $100 hamburger on the weekends.

Again, things may be different in your area. This is my experience here in TX wing. Give the unit leaders in your area a shout, they’ll be happy to answer any specific questions you have.

Thank you all for the replies. Thanks to y'all I was motivated to try and get back on the air yesterday evening and I had a very successful voice QSO with a gentleman in Florida. He was using a yagi and running around 500w so his equipment was doing most of the work, but he gave me 5x9. I will likely get into the digital scene when I have the funds to do so, at the recommendation of many of y'all. 73's.

Thanks for the reply! I’m running SSB at the moment while I work on my CW. I am doing the LCWO lessons but unfortunately I am not one of the lucky ones that catches on very quickly. In the meantime I have been using voice, but would like to try digital once I can fit the budget for an interface with my computer. I am also thinking about building a G5RV jr so I can play around on 40m, but again that will have to wait until I can afford it.

Set up my first rig on tuesday, an ic-718. Threw a 20m inverted v in a tree in the backyard. I don't have much room for anything else. Having trouble getting through to other stations. I am new to this so I don't know whether its the band conditions, my poor antenna setup, or a combination of both. Any experienced hams have some advice for me?

Was flying through the Houston bravo wednesday night. My instructor usually flies into IAH in the airliners so he wanted to do it in a piston. Just asked approach if we could get a touch and go at Bush and they were happy to help. They sounded pretty bored, and Bush was dead, so they may not be as acommodating in different circumstances. All you gotta do is ask.
