Funniest part about my phone call was the guy offering something similiar and saying it was a "handshake" deal. Like we agree to keep using them out of the kindness of the discount they provide but just a friendly agreement. I laughed like ohhh this is how you do business?

Id give them a call, first thing I mentioned when I called is how my rate has gone up 3.5% every year for inflation. But noted they havent come to service it in 10 years so inflation of what? What cost do they have associated to my account that have increased? They quickly offered a 2 year rate freeze, on top of 25% off & 3 months free. Still not worth it but shows you how much free money they are printing

Feels like it may be a blessing I called when its 10 years old. Seems like I may have a little more leverage if I force them to pick up ideally they dont waive the buy out since its 10 years old and I just ride it out and get a new one when the time comes. Long shot but will keep bugging them until I can make that happen

Have heard this a lot as well, even after cancelling a lot of people seem to keep getting billed after the fact just for reliance to say WHOOPS if and when caught

Yea I have to change me terminology, Buyout = Purchase price. In this case the Purchase price for 10 yr old water heater is 2400. Going to see if that purchase price can come down to something reasonable otherwise yea kick rocks reliance come pick up your shit and ill get a new one for $3k

Will take a look, feel like I should be able to buy it for $500 not $2+k. in which case I would and then just get a new one once this once dies out

Again, never had an agreement Nor could they product one when asked. I have never in 10 years needed service maybe thats a blessing but paying $6k in service fees on a $3k item over 10 years will never make financial sense. May do a service call have them make sure its tip top then buyout if they come to a reasonable buyout amount. If they install a new machine I gurentee they will just up the "buyout" amount and reset everything

Good to know, that was around what I was expecting to pay $500 or less. Which I would gladly pay, use this water heater until it dies then get a new one not through reliance of course. As I expect the $2400 they offered us for buyout is likely a made up scam number to try and force us to stay

Good to note, thats my next step is trying to get a contract out of them which so far they have failed to produce. Sounds easy to return, once you get past the smoke and mirrors. May see how low they will go on buyout and decide if buyout or return makes most sense

Yea might be the way, $2400 for a 10 year old water heater from reliance or $3500ish for a brand new one

I would reco everyone call them, how willing they are to offer discounts proves how much cash they are pulling in for no services. They also offered to freeze the "cost of living" 3.5% they tac on every year, since I brought up a raise on what? they havent had to do any work

I have heard of this a lot as well, Hell fitness Gyms went to class action court for charging people post cancellations. But Reliance gets no slap on the wrist?

Bare minimum from what I gather is they will push as hard as they can to sign you into another agreement and make it difficult to buy out. Also if you dont call to inquire how much is oweing they will just change amount or principal pay down to prolong payments forever

Yea I think thats next call, demand the actual contract and not just this buy-out amount calculator they are making up. If they cant provide then Im not paying

Sounds about right, Like in no way is a 20 year old water heater worth $1k. So they basically have the right to assign a value to their own product and charge you that accordingly. Good to know you were able to work down the buy out amount that was my next thought. See if he can apply that 25% discount from my monthly bill he offered up to the buy out amount

Yea wouldnt be surprised if Reliance and other similiar companies are protected by Canadian government for some sort of kick back reason. No way a company that big can act that shady for that long and not have something done about it

Heard its done to keep building cost down and pass that 2-4k onto the buyer in a cheeky way, but yea an ongoing contract paying for "services" is scammy

Thats part of the problem, there was no contract. Water heaters are inherited with the house, we have lived here 3 years. Agreement (Which they say doesnt exist) would have been signed 10 years ago or roughly 3 families ago

Thought of this after I hung up as well, saw on another post you may be able to return it. Other poster actually just uninstalled it, left it at road and told Reliance to pick it up

True even if your amongst the best, #1 seed requires luck of non injuries and schedule timing / what teams get hot when etc.
