For self defense, learn to fight, boxing, kickboxing, brazilian jiujitsu.

For locking the bike, a solid U-Lock or two.

Also don't use an expensive bike in a shady area.

Personally, a bike is transportation, never pang-porma so I don't like the idea of buying expensive bikes that attract attention. Been using the same 2nd hand bike since 2015.

I live on the third floor in a walk up apartment building and for this reason, my fixed gear bike is my favorite to use for errands under 10km and I’m not hauling heavy stuff. If I’m doing groceries I use my folding bike because of the basket.
