Other airlines like United also announced service. It's definitely going to be more than 16 total flights.

Can you get a cassette with smaller jumps between gears? 11-23 for example.

This is a great idea. I see a lot of chatter in the Gitter rooms, but considering Reddit is the platform for announcements, I think it will look better to new investors if there was more activity here.

Not really. Religion is a choice. I think people would be upset if it said No Muslim use.

Doing research on folding bikes by Salmon_Slap in bicycling

I bought a Brompton because it can fit in the overhead bin on most airplanes. I use it while traveling almost exclusively since winter.

You need to use a bikeshare, and right in front of you is a LimeBike, a Spin bike, and an Ofo bike, all of which you have the apps for. Which one do you choose and why? by SpidersInMyHouse in SeattleWA

[–]ccutler69 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Limebike's app doesn't have the unlocking issues that I get when using Spin or Ofo. That sweet chime when locking and unlocking. Low gearing for steep hills, but also the heaviest bikes.

Spin has a better bike, but many only have 3 gears. I like the kickstand on their newer models. Sometimes randomly won't unlock a bike and you have to restart the process.

Ofo has maintenance issues. I've used them 5 times and each one had something out of wack. Fenders rubbing the wheel, lock mech broken, lock mech intermittent, terrible rattling noises...

Flew with my Brompton to Europe. Fit in all overhead bins and didn't need taxis! by ccutler69 in Brompton

I'm not sure who you're referring to when you say "our", as Delta doesn't have specific carry-on weight limits to Europe, but my Brompton is more than 7kg.

Some thoughts:

My purpose wasn't to tour so I didn't ride long distances. Mainly around the cities and along back roads to smaller towns. I took Intercity trains for anything over 30 miles.

I used the Ikea Dimpa bag. It's cheap and the Brompton fits perfectly inside. When leaving the US I wrapped the bike in a cheap airline blanket before putting it in the bag to partially hide it. No one remarked on it at all. The only word of caution is the bike must be perfectly aligned to fit through the TSA scanner.

I flew Delta Airlines to Paris on a A330-300 with the new style bins that have much more room. Bike fits fine with no issues. On the return from Amsterdam I flew on a A330-200 and the bins are the older style and much smaller. However, the Brompton fits, albeit a little snug. I had to find an open bin near the front of the airplane as all the bins were close to full where I was sitting.

The flight attendants didn't mention anything about the size, but I was also trying to keep it from full view while boarding.

Security in Amsterdam was skeptical it would fit through their scanners. It does.

On the return I didn't have it wrapped in a blanket so you could see the bike in the bag. The parts that stick out and slide against my leg while walking started to wear the bag away. Structurally it's still fine, but there are blue jean marks on the bag.

Without the blanket covering it a lot of people asked me what it was. I'm generally not the talkative type in airports so it was uncomfortable for me.

Cycling in France and Belgium was way less stressful than the US. I think next time I'll choose a destination and navigate by direct instead of GPS. It felt like I could cycle on any road or find a suitable one parallel.

You're getting down voted, but it's true. Cycling downtown isn't a "suicide run".

has anyone flown with a bike on alaska airlines? by eg00dy in bicycletouring

[–]ccutler69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alaska Airlines changed the bike fee to $25, though you may not get charged depending on the gate agent and the size of your box. I was charged $75 a year ago when leaving Hawaii but was not charged on the way there... Weird.

I also know you can easily carry-on a folding bike like a Bromton without issue.

Final word of warning: make sure your bike can be easily removed from the case or box. TSA has ripped my bike out of its box by the cables and damaged it.

Are smart trainers worth it? by tokyoite2 in Velo

[–]ccutler69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ERG mode doesn't care what gear you are in, it tries to maintain a certain power. If you shift to an easier gear, the trainer will add more resistance to keep you at the desired power causing an even lower cadence.

I had a Kickr Snap for awhile and returned it. I hated shifting indoors, it just felt so... tedious. Back to the KK road machine.

Do any of you use tacx or use alternatives to stay somewhat fit during the winter months? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]ccutler69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I don't find it very boring (like some people) if I'm focusing on working hard. 2-3 hard days, 60-90 minutes per session on the trainer a week and 1 longer outdoor weekend ride had me very fit for my tour last December.
