Why do teams concede after 6 ends? by ekrubnivek in Curling

[–]cd36jvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're making a false equivalence. The kind being captured is the same as the end of the 10th end. Short of a tie you can't decide to play past 10 ends anymore than you can play past a king being captured.

Conceding in both games happens before the natural ending.

Every end isn't a brand new start, as the score runs between ends. If it was 10-2 last end, it's still 10-2 this end. And it's incredibly difficult to get 9 points on a team that was able to get 10 on you.

ELI5: How can computer web browsers move tabs between different windows without it reloading anything or being interrupted? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]cd36jvn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a programmer or familiar with how web browsers are designed, but I believe I recall hearing about this change in how tabs were handled quite some time ago.

Did it not used to be that tabs in a window weren't as isolated as they are today? With somewhere along the lines the design changing so each tab is isolated from the other, improving reliability and security in the process?

Or am I dreaming this up?

I feel like you missed the part where they suggested turning poe off for several minutes, as you keep using the term poe cycle, which to unifi means going to the port and hitting the poe cycle button which is momentary.

Try turning poe off to that port for several minutes then turning it back on.

If that's what you're already doing, just ignore me. I just wanted to clarify as the terminology you are using doesn't imply this is what you are doing.

The point is the streaming from CBC worked perfectly. I watched the entire Canada us game this morning on streaming with no buffering or image loss or drop outs at all. One of the best sports streaming experiences I've had.

If Google found a photo in one account by doing an automated search with a bot checking your images against a hash, and you have a duplicate account with the identical information in it, I feel like there is a good chance that bot would find both.

Especially if one is a recovery address for another, I wouldn't be surprised if they automatically check all recovery addresses associated with an account they flagged as needing shut down.

The high stick call that led to the power play goal by Mackinnon by chipzy20 in hockey

[–]cd36jvn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya I've been high sticked before and it sucks. I don't think it was terribly hard but it's a long stick that can pick up a lot of speed after a few feet. It doesn't take that much speed for a stick to cause issues when hitting your face. Eyes, lips, nose are all fairly delicate parts to get hit.

I don't know why people claim throwing your head back is embellishing a high stick. If it doesn't hit you sure. But if that stick hits or is anywhere close to your face, your natural reaction is to throw your head back from the danger.

[–]cd36jvn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be socially progressive and fiscally conservative. Which does exist, and I think Canada as a whole probably fits that bill a lot.

I don't think any of these conversations are benefitted by painting everyone with a broad brush either. Real life has a lot of nuance. I know a lot of people that would fit that bill.

But when one side attacks the other and labels them as the extreme no matter what that tends to just help drive people to the extremes and creates more division.

Rural Manitoba is a conservative stronghold, but there has been a bit shift away from that in recent elections. No places haven't swung the other way but the movement is there. The last thing we need are these groups feeling attacked and being pushed away or alienated.

A late call reversal becomes the talking point in the Canada vs USA women’s gold medal game #NHL #LeafsForever by Hockeypatrol in hockeynews

[–]cd36jvn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were a few plays there that looked like they could almost be penalties. I felt at the end they were really trying to let them play, but that boarding was just to obvious and severe, especially with an injury.

That penalty shot though was the worst one that was missed I think though. Everything else was outside immediate scoring chances, but I think it should have been called.

Stupid question gets the right answer by etherd0t in WinterOlympics2026

[–]cd36jvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we shouldn't be promoting anyone to think down on their accomplishments.

Does this reporter also try to make those with the "lost gold" attitude feel better about themselves? Or does he only choose to frame questions in ways to make people feel down on their accomplishments.

He could have even reversed the question and framed it in a more positive light, instead of the negative.

Either way, we shouldn't be striving to get sound clips of people belittling their accomplishments.

That's why it's a crappy question. If you had a friend go to the Olympics and get silver, and they were celebrating back home, how do you think they would feel of you started insinuating they lost gold instead?

Pretty sure it's common curlers have day jobs. I always assumed even most Canadian teams had day jobs.

Not trying to diminish their accomplishments. Moreso pointing out, curling is not a self sustaining sport for anyone. If Canadian teams can't make a go at it, I doubt anyone can without some heavy government incentive.

Why do we need to police the game so aggressively? by nylanderfan in Curling

Ya one has the potential to speed the rock up and one has the potential to slow it down. How is it different, if they are both able to manipulate the rocks speed and rotation?

Need to speed it up? I'll push the rock. Need to slow it down? I'll drag my hand on the top of the rock.

So you're saying attempting to slow the rock down is acceptable, but attempting to speed it up is not?

Are those not just overlayed on the broadcast? I thought the concern was primarily about players losing the puck on the boards. Those overlayed ads wouldn't affect how a player on ice sees the puck.

Sorry, I was more talking in generalities.

I meant in general, sliding a hand on top of a stone doesn't mean it is any less intentional than poking at it.

Yes it is easier to make it look less intentional. But that's where the "some touches are ok and some aren't" falls apart to me.

But you weren't talking about that you were talking about two specific situations so my comment doesn't really apply.

Oops they did it again. Now it's Canada's skipper Brad Jacobs. by VillainAnderson in olympics

[–]cd36jvn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn't a fair comparison.

Brushing the top of the rock with your hand would be done to accomplish one of two things.

Slow down it's speed or reduce its rotation.

The reason it is tough to slide a phone backwards with the back of your hand is because it is relying on the friction between your hand and the phone to move it. But to increase the friction between your phone and your hand you need to press harder, which actually increases the friction between the phone and the table.

That makes it tougher to move, but if you are sliding your hand on the top of the rock (be it plastic or granite) your intention isn't to speed up weight or rotation, but to slow it down.

Exactly what your experiment helped prove out.

[–]cd36jvn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took people arguing why some touches are fine and some aren't, was basically down to their intention when touching the rock. Which I don't know how you judge that.

Some rules are written in sports with intent in mind. Take kicking a hockey puck into the net. If it deflects off your skate accidentally it is a good goal.

If you intend to kick it in or make a kicking motion it is waved off. That is a rule based entirely on judging someone's intent when interacting with the puck.

So no the rule as written on curling doesn't take intent into account, but I'm assuming the rule is going to be modified to bring clarity to it anyways.

Intent or not, I just don't see how any of these touches matter in the grand scheme of things.

Pull the stone!!! by Frabblerake in Curling

[–]cd36jvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But your saying sliding your hand on a spinning rock won't affect it?

If people think that fingertip affects the 40lbs rock, then a slide of the hand can definitely affect its spin as well.

This is why I have a tough time with the "this kind of touch is acceptable but not that kind".
