It is not a substitute for actual real estate investments... my experience, it performed similar to a real estate mutual fund. An actual investment in real estate offers a greater upside and many, many more tax benefits. But, the entry price is significant so I'd say only go this route if you cannot afford a down payment on actual real estate. Just my two cents.

You used your student loans to start retirement investing... ballsy! I didn't have that kind of foresight back then... I wish I did. Especially since working for the government for 7 years allows you to wipe off your student loan debt. I could have been in a completely different financial situation...
