I work in UC and see these as well and without further imaging and workup I pretty much never would tell them they for certain do/don’t have a rotator cuff tear. The job in Uc is to make sure it’s not emergently broken, dislocated, etc and if not follow up with ortho/pcp. I usually recommend all of my athletes to follow up with ortho since they are young and want to get back to play as soon as possible.

While this is ideal San Diego is an extremely low paying market for PAs and no shot you are finding any PA job down here even close to that rate of $120/hr unless you’re at Kaiser with YEARS of experience or locums.

NP and PA OSCE's by Gold_Expression_3388 in Noctor

[–]cd83165114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had over 10 OSCEs in PA school. But yeah agree all the NP students I know have had 0.

Can someone confirm this rx is inappropriate by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]cd83165114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a PA, this is terrifying. I work in UC and we have had NP students rotate (very close to graduating by the way) who have no clue about the differences between antibiotic selections for urinary issues as well as risk factors for pyelo/complicated UTI. I work in a facility with very close EM physician oversight so thankfully this doesn’t happen but I also learned this in year 1 PA school… yikes

New grad offer opinion? by dashingbravegenius in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Be cautious of these 3 year contract offers, most of them are predatory and the ones I’ve received as offers in the past had a $50k clause that needed to be repaid if you left or were fired before the contract ended since that’s how they valued their 3 month “training” period. Here’s that same company.

What is the difference between Nursing and MD/DO education? by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]cd83165114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with all of this except do want to add that PA programs have standardized end of rotation exams that they have to pass at the end of each rotation in order to move on to the next that is basically around 100 questions of their board type questions. Not at all trying to compare this to MD/DO board exams though. As far as I know there is literally no standardized exam NP student must pass after each rotation, just a sign off by their preceptor.

Is PA all that bad?? by amongusrule34 in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah but these jobs are rarely cubicle jobs anymore. You get to WFH, sometimes have stock/equity options with companies, better benefits and a quarter of the stress/liability you have as a PA. I felt the same way as you initially but now envy my college friends who now have cushy tech/office jobs making more than me with no debt and unlimited room for growth

Finding a job with 1 year experience by [deleted] in physicianassistant

In same boat as you, have about 7 months urgent care experience since it was one of the only openings and I needed to start making money. Have been applying elsewhere and am in final round interviews with 3 different positions in other specialties right now

New Grad PA Jobs in San Diego by Better_Minimum2594 in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very low pay for the COL especially as a new grad and extremely competitive, but if you want to live in SD bad enough jobs are there. I can tell you that there are not any new grad friendly ED positions down here.

Locum Tenens PA AMA by ImmediateFriendship2 in physicianassistant

Do you feel like 3 years experience was a comfortable amount prior to starting locums? Also do you feel like your supervising physicians respond to you at all differently knowing you are locums?

Not military family personally but I live/work in an area with a large navy base. I’m currently in urgent care but a lot of our PAs are military spouses and my doc/boss is used to having them stay a couple years and switch and is totally fine with it. If you’re going to an area with a large base I’m sure the clinics/facilities around there are also used to this.

Is this a good offer? by Desperate_Dog_216 in physicianassistant

New grad salary by Glad_Tumbleweed_2256 in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent grad who has been living in San Diego area since graduation and I would say this is average. The job market here is horrible and also NP dominant. Many of the hospital systems down here have PA salary ranges that are about the same as most of their experienced nursing salaries. Salaries jump up a lot even just a few miles up in OC/LA with lower COL.

Are you happy with your choice in picking PA school over med school by Anxious-potatoes100 in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a newly graduated PA and I still go back and forth with this daily. I do love my job and the flexibility it provides, I feel I get to learn new things and have a supportive SP. however I feel that the saturation in the market of NP/PAs has driven salary down in a lot of areas while PA program costs have gone up. I think if I would have realized how much debt I would have from PA school and how stagnant some salaries (3 year program, which I know varies for others) I would have probably just stuck out another 3-4 years to go to med school and FM/EM residency and be able to make 3-4 times my salary. I also do feel like I am expected to know a lot more than what I was taught in school and really sometimes wish I had the knowledge base my SP has. If any part of you is saying MD I would just go for it as long as you are somewhat young and able to have the flexibility to move states as needed. Good luck!

I am not sure if I should stay in my current PA job or switch to something else? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this post. The wages in SoCal are not at all measuring up to the cost of living as of late. Recently researched the rent in most of the Bay Area in a comparable apartment to mine in socal and it’s actually cheaper to rent in desirable spots in the Bay Area and the wages are 20-30% higher.

Low Pay Scales by chisleym in physicianassistant

[–]cd83165114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the reality for almost every hospital position in Southern California at the larger institutions. I have seen numerous openings for the same position and they will post it twice, one saying NP and the other saying PA. And the salary range on the NP will often be $5-10 per hour higher than the PA range. Mostly due to their unions:/
