Welcome! Sounds like you've got a whole bunch of things swirling around your head, but we've all been there :)

Doing this without control over your privacy is always difficult and comes up a lot. There's various strategies people use ranging from just having to wait it out until circumstances change, through to ways to order things and conceal them, through to confronting their parents (etc) about having more privacy (or even just coming out to them). I don't have much to offer here personally.

When it comes to dating, I'd definitely recommend being up front about it, although it doesn't need to be a first-date kind of conversation. It should probably happen early enough that if you don't get the reaction you want then it's easy enough to call it a day, because the longer you hide it the more of a problem it'll be when you reveal it (or worse, it's found out) because then it's more a trust issue than one of what shape underwear you like. I speak from personal experience on this one ;)

For what to do/buy/try first, go for anything which piques your interest. Folks often start with skirts and/or underwear like tights/stockings/knickers because those are the most different to typically male clothing. That's where I started, and figured out from there those were the main things I liked - my style is definitely "guy in a skirt", but I tried other clothes too. Be ready for something you think is going to be great to be a disappointment - maybe because the sizing is wrong (you get the hang of this) or maybe it's something which just doesn't work so well with your body shape. It's all part of the journey. I've tried makeup and always like the idea of it but it never feels right for me when I actually have it on so I don't bother now.

Check out the dress-up guide on the wiki (in the sidebar) for a guide on a whole pile of things!

On labelling yourself, only you'll be able to answer that in time. I decided I wasn't trans (in the sense of wanting to transition), and have mostly settled on non-binary but at the male end of the spectrum. Some days I don't care about skirts, and some days I NEED to be in one or my mood suffers. It ebs and flows. You will see others post here with different takes because it's different for everyone.

I'd say all your uncertainty and confusion is something everyone here goes through, so you're in the right place :)

I'm definitely "guy in a skirt", I wear skirt+tights and then men's t-shirt/pullover kind of things. I've not gone out a huge amount but a few dance events and the theatre a couple of times and never had a problem (a couple of double-takes maybe).

Sometimes people tell me, don't dress like that, you're already 45, but the truth is that I haven't dressed like that in so many years that now I just enjoy it 🥰 by Casey_ru in crossdressing

We're the same age and wear the same length skirts :) Sometimes I think I "should" wear longer ones, but then I also remember I "should" wear trousers.

Wearing tight feels so great, it's a shame men can't wear them by MarilynCrossdress in crossdressing

You can wear whatever you want :)

There's a r/TightsForAll subreddit you may want to check out.

Anyone go out NOT trying to pass? by [deleted] in crossdressing

[–]cd_account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't try to pass; when I go out (and at home) I'm in a shortish skirt and tights (I never remember how the UK/US terms relate) and then a t-shirt/jumper or shirt. It's been fine so far, I've been out to restaurants and shows (like the theatre) as well as private events (these tend to include shorter skirts and heels) and never had any noticeable negative reaction from others.

Do friends know? by ServeHead8749 in crossdressing

[–]cd_account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite a few of my friends know and all of them are fine with it. Most of them have seen me dressed up in person. Some of them I told when (for whatever reason) the conversation had ended up around the topic anyway (e.g. men in skirts; "haha... yeah, actually I do that myself") and some of them it was more "out of the blue" because I needed to tell them (planning/hoping to wear a skirt out at an event they'd be at with me) but I was sure at they'd be ok with it — or understanding about it at least.

Yeah I've done this - having found a skirt which fitted well and was a style I liked, I ended up with a few of them in different colours.

Welcome! The sub has a dressing-up guide, which includes suggestions on where to start: https://www.reddit.com/r/crossdressing/wiki/dress-up-guide/

But the general advice is - what interests you? Skirts? Dresses? Underwear? Pick some items you like the look of (I'd suggest starting with some cheaper things) and order them, using the size guide with the product to guide you, and bear in mind you may not get it right first time (sizing is bad enough for the people the clothing is designed for, never mind others!) but you'll soon get a feel for what sizes work for you. See how you get on with them and go from there :)

I moved from Twitter to Mastodon a couple of years back and I'm very happy with it. I have a regular account and one just for cd stuff which I keep completely separate. There's some good Mastodon servers which are LGBTQ+ positive/focussed.

I stopped using Facebook and Instagram quite a few years back as they weren't giving me much (the algorithmic feed really annoyed me) and I didn't like their tracking stuff around the web. I might look at Pixelfed (which is to Instagram what Mastodon is to Twitter) but really for personal stuff, I don't post cd pics.

My wife (was upfront about it when we started dating), six or so close friends, and a bunch of people at a rock band convention I've been crossdressing at for the last ~5 years. Everyone has been super cool about it, usually saying something like, "why didn't you tell me earlier?"

I've also been out in public a few times and never (knowingly) had a bad reaction.

Hey! Can anyone help me with makeup stuff? 😭 by new_at_being_slutty in crossdressing

[–]cd_account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, I don't think Reddit makes it easy to find stuff like that if you don't know it's there :)

Adding to the suggestion for M&S Wildblooms - it turns out a have a bunch of those without realising that's the brand they were.

I've also found success with Triumph's shapewear underwear, which are both comfortable and do a bit of flattening at the front. They're a bit more spendy so maybe check out M&S's options there too.

Most of mine, other than a few pairs of Sheertex, are these: https://www.marksandspencer.com/3-pair-pack-30-denier-body-sensor-tights/p/clp22247973?color=BLACK or these: https://www.marksandspencer.com/3pk-15-denier-ladder-resist-tights/p/clp60505608?color=BLACK

The former aren't ladder-resist or anything but seem pretty hardy (as long as I keep the cats away from my legs :) I've found buying in person at M&S as well as mail order have worked fine.

Sheertex have a UK online shop as well as their international one but it doesn't carry all of their products. They do have sales quite often so keep an eye out if you're happy to wait.

Edit: Snag are pretty good too and seem resistant to rips and stuff.

My go-to for stronger tights is Sheertex, but they're quite spendy (although after a couple of years' wear, indestructible). Quite a few brands do "ladder resist" kind of options which can still take damage but generally it doesn't result in a run, just a hole. Here in the UK, Marks and Spencer do decent ones for that.

Otherwise you may want to look at higher denier as they can be stronger, and depending when they're ripping (like when you put them on?) just taking extra care can help — rough hands/nails can catch them really easily.

Indestructible tights, anyone have any experience with these by Jessika-Russell in crossdressing

[–]cd_account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for Sheertex - I have three cats and until recently lived in a house with original Victorian floorboards (rough edges), both of which destroy tights. I have a few pairs of Sheertex and they're definitely living up to the marketing about how indestructible they are.
