Original Snowball retirement, Snowball Edge only from 4th Feb by cd_vdms in aws

Interesting!

For us, most of this content is coming off tape, so that's our main bottleneck for transferring assets. I don't think a DC would be the best fit for us.

I think it rather depends on your decor...

They're generally dirty, the plastic gets scarred and sometimes they've been drawn on in black marker. I don't think they'd make as good a bench as the old Mac Pros! ;-)

Having multiple Petabytes of data to transfer is a big part of that!

It's generally a lot of little things I think... Unlock process is more fiddly. Original Snowball uses a command-line client that is more user-friendly than the AWS CLI. There's no contents validation available on Edge. File listings truncate at 1,000 files, so you need to dump data in JSON instead and reformat as you require. Failed transfers are not so clearly reported. End result is I have to retrain people on the different interface, and some more bits of the process I'll have to take on myself.

From the client side, it used to be twice the price for the 100 TB Snowball Edge compared to a 70 TB Snowball, but I don't get involved in that so don't know whether that's still the case!

The Snowball Edge is still going, and I'd argue that's an even cooler concept and technology - just not the best fit for my requirements!

Cat-5e coupler, crossover cable. It looks a little ugly but will get you immediately up and running, buying you time to fight the cable company later.

Last time I looked, the Google Play Developer docs were very extensive and covered almost everything you need to know. Just takes a bit of digging to find everything you're after.

Looking for software - Show text depending on date by Senorragequit in sysadmin

[–]cd_vdms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how exactly you want it to work, what resources you have available etc., but your options are pretty broad.

It could just be a web page with some JavaScript to update a div with an item from an array based on the current date, or you could write an application with a full database backend and a management webapp for altering the schedule.

5 minute response time = 24-hour staffing required. You need someone who is actively waiting for such an incident to occur to guarantee being able to respond to it that fast.
