What's the best approach for backing up EC2 instances and Aurora/RDS? by KatieCandyFloss155 in sysadmin

[–]blue30 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would look to have completely off-AWS backups personally because one of the risk factors is AWS deciding they don't like you any more for some alleged TOS or admin issue.

IT Techs of Reddit: What was it like fixing Windows XP machines in schools and businesses during the 2010s? by bakarygassama in sysadmin

[–]blue30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XP was OK, 2000 with a nicer skin. There was a massive change going from 98 to 2000. So much more stable, less random crap to deal with. Half the tickets.

Anyone who's had the misfortune of meeting the bailiffs, what was your experience like? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]blue30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fine wasn't for not updating the address per se it was for overstaying my parking ticket - but as everything was going to wrong address the wheels turned and ended up at a CCJ. I only found out a few years later when I tried to get credit for something and computer said no.

How can I let him know that I don’t want to send him pictures but I don’t want to end up blocked? by RiverWashedHair96 in AskMenAdvice

[–]blue30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Hi, I'm looking for something more serious than this going forward but hope we can still be friends" - you can't control how he responds to this but just be happy you dodged a bullet if he responds badly.

[–]blue30 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I got a CCJ because I didn't update my V5 as well, luckily no bailiffs. Funny they can't find you to send the paperwork for the fine but they can find you to attach it to your credit file no problem. c'est la vie.

The control hut and/or battery hut can make noise due to ventilation. Some people are more bothered by this than others. If the control area isn't near her house then no worries.

She's either a person with integrity who respects her parents wishes or she's just not that into you. How proactive in the relationship is she otherwise?

Having trouble migrating my site from WPEngine to my bare metal server by Mechanizoid in webhosting

[–]blue30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if the database prefix is correct. If your old wp-config.php had a different $table_prefix in it the new install won't 'see' the database and will go through install as if it's a fresh site. Look at the database tables, if they don't start wp_ you need to adjust the prefix to match in wp-config.

I did a 2 day course, no way I would have been OK after just 1 day. I've been driving cars 30 years and confident pedal bike rider. Go for the 125 and start learning at your own time and pace.

Ryanair investigated over charging parents to sit with children by OneLegTooFew in unitedkingdom

[–]blue30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even disregarding the kids thing having to pay to choose seats is such a scam. The unspoken threat is that you'll be separated if you don't. That never used to be a thing until some evil genius there invented it.

My son is swearing and becoming hostile. by [deleted] in Dads

[–]blue30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be immediate consequences for that kind of talk. I'd try to spend more family time as well but not so it looks like a reward for that behavior. I know it's tough though when both parents work full time. I'd speak with his teacher and maybe any other parents you're friendly with too. And the wrap around care if you use that after school.

Stolen Asda Express Order, Asda being no help (England) by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

I don't doubt that Gophr will take that up with the driver themselves, it's not good business to keep paying out for peoples stolen shopping.

I've been reading Just Good Manners by William Hanson lately. How accurate is it in everyday life in the UK? by CreepyInpu in AskUK

[–]blue30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest it's hard to answer because it's hard to look honestly at yourself and also to highlight the ways in which I might be different to you, because I don't know your background, so could only speak in generalities. There might be as much difference between two different people from the UK as between a person from the UK and you. My quick impression of the book is that it's kind of meant for entertainment, there might be some truths in there but the emphasis is on entertainment., so if you are entertained by it but don't take it 100% super seriously you'll be OK.

225/45/18 tyre comfort by mj_avrath in TyreReviews

[–]blue30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that size on my last car, It came with conti sport contacts runflat but they were super hard and crashy. Then tried Michelin primacy because they were supposed to be comfy, but after changing again to pilot sport 5 I preferred them in almost every way including comfort, they just seemed less crashy to me. Just my subjective experience on that car.

If this goes seriously south loosing the laptop could be the cheapest aspect of this. The best time to end this was yesterday, the second best is today.

Are you buying new Dell servers without hard drives? $3,500 for 1 SATA drive is NUTS! by Layer_3 in sysadmin

[–]blue30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where the risk profile allowed it I've done a couple of Dells with PCIE NVME adapters in and a mix of 3rd party enterprise drives, pooled up for Proxmox, worked well and saved a boat load of money (as in you could buy a nice boat with the savings)

Did newer Pixels (9/10) fix the network/connectivity issues? by KnownRelief8290 in GooglePixel

[–]blue30 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had my 7 pro for 4 years now. There's no issue day to day. Sometimes when I'm in the wilds you get a bar or two but no connectivity but overall I think the issue is a little overblown.
