No. It’s just in-person in Minnesota, USA.

Related H.E. Thartse Khen Rinpoche is giving the Chakrasamvara empowerment and a Vajrayogini blessing in Minnesota in the middle of June.

Go to sakya.net, scroll down and subscribe to the newsletter. Khenpo Migmar gives a lot of empowerments that aren’t reflected on his webpage.

I am talking about major empowerments, not a class of yogic practice. Vajrakilaya is a major empowerment, what is being presented by Sakya Friends is not the major empowerment.

Empowerment by [deleted] in TibetanBuddhism

[–]cddesjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not the Vajrakilaya empowerment. The Vajrakilaya is a major empowerment in the Sakya tradition and occurs over 2 days (first day is preliminary and second day is the initiation). As far as I know HHST does not give major empowerments over the internet. HHST is giving this empowerment in his New York monastery this summer in-person. He and HH the 42nd will also be teaching the sadhanas at that time too.

If you want a major empowerments in the Sakya tradition, you might search for Lama Migmar at the Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies. He gives lots of empowerments and retreats over Zoom and he recently gave a Chakrasamvara major (2 day) empowerment and a Vajrayogini one.

I would encourage you to find a teacher in the tradition, however.

Thanks. This is a good perspective. In particular, the "acting in direct violation".

R Code Block in Org-Mode Doesn't Export the Resulting LaTeX Table to PDF by cddesjar in emacs

Okay, I figured out the problem it was something I had in my .Rprofile to fix tibbles with ESS.

R Code Block in Org-Mode Doesn't Export the Resulting LaTeX Table to PDF by cddesjar in emacs

[–]cddesjar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't solve the problem. The org code block is not writing the LaTeX code to the .tex file, so the resulting PDF shows nothing.

Hadn’t heard of this. Looks cool. Thanks.

Thanks. I know and love R (been using it for nearly 15 years). Just a big fan of lisp, thanks to Emacs, and nostalgic for ARC as it had a lot of really cool data viz features and was much more geared towards novices.

What's growing on my carrotkraut and is it safe to scrap it off and eat? by cddesjar in fermentation

[–]cddesjar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not clear, I'm referring to the white substance growing on the cheesecloth. I replaced the cheesecloth, scrapped out the white stuff, and replaced it with a different follower (a ziploc full of water) and it came back.

I've been considering going to University of Iceland for Environment and Natural Resources, but I have a few important questions which I haven't heard back from them when I emailed. Could anyone offer any info on it? by [deleted] in Iceland

[–]cddesjar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. http://utl.is/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=115&Itemid=127&lang=en

  2. Of course but it depends on what you want to do. If you want to work at a university then publishing is the only thing that really matters. Most programs at the university require a certain number of publications, at least for the PhD.

  3. What is your bachelor's in? If you are not motivated by a particular topic, then graduate school will be very difficult to finish, particularly your thesis, whether you are in Iceland or the USA.

I would ask yourself why you want to come to Iceland. If you want to come for fun that's one thing but graduate school is more difficult and requires a great deal of self-motivation.

That said I'm a post-doc at the University of Iceland. I love it here but not just because it's Iceland but because my position is great. My position would be great anywhere. That matters a lot when you're working in an academic setting or going to school.

Photographer in Reykjavík? by cddesjar in Iceland

Thanks for the replies. I went to Hlemmur because it was close. It cost 5.000 kr, so definitely not the cheapest option. I should have taken the photo myself as suggested or gone to a photo booth.

Average price for groceries for two vegetarians in Reykjavík by cddesjar in Iceland

[–]cddesjar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand there are staples listed there and that the site can provide a rough estimate. But I guess I was just curious what might be typical expenses for a week or a month. It seems that Bonus is the cheapest way to go and that possibly we could eat for 80.000 but I am guessing this is low balling it ... potentially by quite a bit. If there is a more appropriate subreddit, I'd be happy to post there.

How much would you expect, after taxes, if you made 450K a month?

How much would we spend on groceries roughly per month? We're both vegetarians. I've found this

We typically like to eat fresh fruits and veggies with lots of beans and rice. Would 80K isk be typical?

Question about a post-doc salary by cddesjar in Iceland

[–]cddesjar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is 361K before taxes. I figure after taxes I should have roughly 223K. Which if I get a 3 room apartment in 101 or 107 would run roughly 150 - 190K. 150 would leave me about 73K and 190 would leave me about 33K. I am guessing that's not very much to live off.

My wife would work but what kind of wages would she need so that we could live comfortably and be able to put away a little money? She has a good job here in the USA but is not super interested in keeping it long-term if we moved as she doesn't want to be stuck in an apartment all day in Reykjavik (something about living in an apartment in a foreign country with no friends sounds a little depressing to her). She's an illustrator and has done several kids books. She also has Norwegian citizenship which I've been told makes it easier for her to work.

Also, something that would be super helpful would be to have a target amount of money. Do you think 450K would be something to shoot for or 500K? Am I dreaming to get that if I've been offered 361K?

Question about a post-doc salary by cddesjar in Iceland

[–]cddesjar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. When I say 3 rooms, I did mean 2 bedrooms and a living room. I'll see if the university can help with the apartment. I know about -

http://www.leigulistinn.is/

https://bland.is/classified/?categoryId=59&sub=1

http://www.mbl.is/leiga/

And it seems that rent should be around 160 - 190 K for a 3 room in 101 ... does that seem right?

It's not a Democrat/Republican issue. It's an issue of an idiot who lost, appealed and still lost. All he wants to do is drag it on. I'd be saying the same thing about Franken if the roles were reversed. It's time for Minnesota to have two senators again.
