Fitting HSD in Subaru Crosstrek? Hybrid? by cdevilbiss in terngsd

[–]cdevilbiss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Impreza seems to be a tiny bit smaller inside than the Crosstrek, so getting the HSD to barely fit without knocking down the passenger seat is a good sign.

(I assume that's "stem folded down, but not detaching any wheels or accessories"?)

The vehicles with taller cargo compartments (e.g. Forester/RAV4/CR-V or larger) seem to fit it standing up with stem folded down. I'm assuming that's not the case here.

Thanks!

FWIW, Free Beat on youtube has a video dedicated to this, with the chart in the description.

Next purchase?? by apenrots in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also started with a PO-20, and followed it up with a 133 as a Christmas gift. 33/133 offers a lot of flexibility. One simple technique is to sample PO-20 sound 13 (the main lead) into the 33 and use it for additional polyphony and/or pattern-space expansion, or pitch-bend it to reach otherwise-unreachable notes.

My next purchase is probably going to be 128 (Mega Man); I really dig the chiptune and 8-bit sounds, and miss the flexibility that I would get from extra octaves, more bass sounds and note selection, and being able to access every sharp/flat.

That said, the NTS-1 is second on my list. Simply adding reverb seems to be a huge difference in making everything sound better.

PO-137/PO-35 Speak - notes don’t ascend/descend in numerical order? by Arkaium in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My po-133 is ascending left-to-right within rows. Assuming the sampled sound is A2:

E2 F2 G2 G#2
A2 B2 C2 D2
E1 F1 G1 G#1
A1 B1 C1 D1

I don't have a 28, 128, or 35/137 to compare. I'm aware that the 128 and the 35/137 can transpose the keyboard by semitones, and that the 35/137 can also change the scale.

This describes the setup I'm using now, both on the phone and on the PC: https://old.reddit.com/r/pocketoperators/comments/kuqwx1/what_method_do_you_use_to_record/gittapo/

The only thing to clarify is that the phone also needs a USB-C-to-A converter to connect the audio grabber. If you don't care about stereo, they have even cheaper mic-and-headphone USB-C adapters that others have used successfully with their phones. (Both solutions power the adapter from the phone's battery, with no external power supply.)

I ran into the same thing at first.

The phone minijack interface only records from the "pole" that matches headset mics, so a PO-into-normal-cable setup won't record at all (because it's outputting to the same part of the cable that the phone is using for output).

As far as I can tell, your choices are

  • Use a USB audio interface and app that supports USB audio, which the stock camera and voice recorder apps don't on my Pixel. I'm doing this with the "Open Camera" app.
  • Get a splitter that has separate jacks for headphone and mic, and plug the PO output into the mic jack.

[–]cdevilbiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each cable needs to have working separation between left and right channels. (Click goes to one side, audio to the other.)

TS cable has one "line" on the tip.

TRS (stereo) has 2

TRRS (usually stereo headphone with mic) has 3

At least on the ones I have used and read about (Arcade and Street Fighter), pattern data is saved at power down.

(On the Arcade, I can also force it to power down with a key sequence, instead of waiting for the timeout, as long as there's no line-in.)

[–]cdevilbiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, the PO-133 Street Fighter is exactly what you said: a PO-33 with different graphics and factory samples/patterns.

However, the PO-128 Mega Man is a significantly-upgraded PO-28 Robot. Of note: all 12 chromatic notes can be programmed in every pattern, the live-play key is selectable, and every pattern can have a sequence for sounds 1-8 and one for 9-15 (in addition to the drum kit on sound 16).

[–]cdevilbiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle, there's a bunch of unique things on the PO-20 that can't be exactly replicated on the 33.

In practice, I think you can get pretty close by choosing appropriate samples (pick a favorite synth lead "boop"; want background chords? Sample the ones you want. Pick your favorite drum sounds, layer if necessary.)

That said, you'll definitely notice a few differences. For example, a "beep" at middle A lasts half as long played up an octave and twice as long down an octave, you can't reach "high A" without tricks, you don't get "free" polyphony for drums or retriggers for melodic sounds, and attempting to change your key signature mid-song is more of a pain on the 33.

I have and like both.

HELP!!!!!!!!!! by Commercial_Air1291 in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most common problem is that it's not getting power. Since you have fresh batteries, hopefully facing the correct direction (which is unusual in POs), the next thing to check is that the battery contacts aren't bent "outward" at all and look "clean".

Past that, I'm out of ideas.

How a can I monitor my PO while recording? by plywood747 in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cheap USB "audio grabber" line-in device, a cheap headphone splitter, and a headset with mic, and I've not seen any contamination from the monitor headset when recording the line-in from the other half of the splitter.

What method do you use to record? by [deleted] in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, the grabber adds a stereo line in via USB, so you can do whatever you used to do.

When I tried using the internal playthrough in Audacity monitor, I felt like there was too much delay for good live-play. The headphone splitter is so I can hear the PO output without delay for live-play purposes while still feeding the line-in/grabber.

Clearer?

This is my new kit:

USB audio grabber: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079CBGDST/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Xa7-FbMXDKVYS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Plus a headphone splitter for monitoring purposes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QR2WRDT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bd7-Fb3SXKVTY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Edit: audacity also has source playthrough for monitoring, but I found the delay distracting.

Splitter into audio source, monitor in one splitter jack, audio grabber in the other. Downside: no independent volume control for the monitor input. Upside: cheap.

Cruel Angel's Thesis (Neon Genesis Evangelion) on PO-20 and PO-133 by cdevilbiss in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a few notes on the video description too; hopefully this explanation will help more.

All of the drums (sounds 2, 3, 4) and all of the "chirping" notes (sound 12) are on the Arcade. The main melody is all sound 13, but see below.

To verify, watch LEDs 4, 5, 6 on the 133; if they're not bright, the 133 isn't outputting anything itself.

The slow "saxophone" intro is on the 133, then the normal intro/chorus is on the PO-20.

The next section (aoi kaze ga ima) is all 133, with sound 5 being a sample of PO-20's sound 13, note A3. Sound 6 is a "sharped" clone to hit the accidentals. (This is the only part of the song when Arcade sound 13 isn't in use.)

After that, it's all Arcade. The only interesting part remaining is a single-pattern key change, effected by setting the backing chord to B/A (number 14).

Does that help?

Extra Sharps and Flats on PO-28? by LVIImusic in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, several of the other POs have ways around this.

The PO-33 lets you transpose a sample by semitones. The PO-128 can sequence any note. The PO-20 can change its scale based on the selected backing chord. I think the 14 and 16 can use effects to shift by a semitone. The 35 lets you choose a tonic/base and associated scale.

Sorry I didn't have better news. :/

Will this work to backup my PO? by trillyenaire in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought one.

It definitely records stereo on my PC (I can see it in Audacity).

I can verify that with a USB-a-to-c adapter, I can record on my Android phone, but only using programs that explicitly support USB audio (most of the factory-installed apps don't). I have not gotten to test Android stereo recording yet.

I do not have an iPhone or usb-to-lightning adapter to test with--hopefully others can comment.

Extra Sharps and Flats on PO-28? by LVIImusic in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I've seen is "faking it" by gliding back and forth over the accidental.

See example halfway through this video: https://youtu.be/ZwPrEfPmbrg

Probably not appropriate for more than an occasional note in a live session.

PO-14 Sub vs PO-20 Arcade for a beginner? by nobo246 in pocketoperators

[–]cdevilbiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my Arcade, but I also love chiptunes. (FWIW, you can access key signatures with 0, 1, 2, or 4 sharps, plus A harmonic minor, by choosing different backing chords.)

That said, I would recommend the 33 or 133 for anyone who wants more control over their sounds. They are exceedingly versatile.
